The Strategy of Core Competencies in Open Innovation Process
Mei-Chu Chen 한국무역연구원 2013 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.9 No.2
Technology is one of the most useful resources for enterprises; it also can be called the weapon of enterprises. Therefore, most enterprises were performing research and developing technologies through self-sufficiency, and were always seeking how to improve their technology to keep their competitive position. However, because of globalization, competition among rivals is increasing, consumers` needs are changing, and it is hard for enterprises’ research and development to comply with market transformation. Therefore, many enterprises quit doing research and developing technologies though self-sufficiency. The meaning of self-sufficiency is reviewed and technical cooperation is one of the means which is requested to keep enterprises’ competitive position.

This study adopted the forced-swimming paradigm to induce depressive symptoms in rats and evaluated the effects on learning and memory processing. Furthermore, the effects of the water extract of Gastrodia elata Bl., a well-known Chinese traditional medicine, on amnesia in rats subjected to the forced-swimming procedure were studied. Rats were subjected to the forced-swimming procedure, and the inhibitory avoidance task and Morris water maze were used to assess learning and memory performance. The acquisition of the two tasks was mostly impaired after the 15-minute forced-swimming procedure. Administration of the water extract of G. elata Bl. for 21 consecutive days at a dosage of 0.5 or 1.0 g/kg of body weight significantly improved retention in the inhibitory avoidance test, and the lower dose showed a better effect than the higher one and the antidepressant fluoxetine (18 mg/kg of body weight). In the Morris water maze, the lower dose of the water extract of G. elata Bl. significantly improved retention by shortening escape latency in the first test session and increasing the time in searching the target zone during the probe test. These findings suggest that water extracts of G. elata Bl. ameliorate the learning and memory deficits induced by forced swimming.

Objective: Hypoactivity in the reward system among patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a well-known phenomenon. Whether the activity in the reward pathway is related to harm avoidance, such as in sensitivity to punishment, is unclear. Evidence regarding the potential difference between ADHD patients and controls in terms of this association is scarce. Methods: Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted on subjects performing the Iowa gambling test. Fourteen adults with ADHD and 14 controls were enrolled in the study. Results: Harm avoidance was found to be positively correlated with the activities of the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex and right insula in individuals with ADHD. A group difference was also confirmed. Conclusion: Understanding the roles of harm avoidance and brain activation during risk tasks is important.

Objective: Altered event-related potential (ERP) performances have been noted in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients and reflect neurocognitive dysfunction. Whether these ERP alterations and correlated dysfunctions exist in healthy parents with ADHD offspring is worth exploring. Methods: Thirteen healthy parents with ADHD offspring and thirteen healthy controls matched for age, sex and years of education were recruited. The auditory oddball paradigm was used to evaluate the P300 wave complex of the ERP, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and continuous performance test were used to measure neurocognitive performance. Results: Healthy parents with ADHD offspring had significantly longer auditory P300 latency at Fz than control group. However, no significant differences were found in cognitive performance. Conclusion: The presence of a subtle alteration in electro-neurophysiological activity without explicit neurocognitive dysfunction suggests potential candidate of biological marker for parents with ADHD offspring.
Automatic Recognition of Emotion based on a Cognitively Motivated Emotion Annotation System
( Ying Chen ),( Sophia Yat Mei Lee ),( Chu Ren Huang ) 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2011 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.12 No.3
Emotion recognition is very important for the extraction of expressive information. In this paper, we provide a robust and versatile emotion annotation scheme that can not only annotate explicit and implicit expressions of emotion, but also can encode different levels of information for a given emotion content. In addition, taking cognitive psychologists` theories into account, large and comparatively high-quality emotion corpora are automatically created to allow for emotion recognition in Chinese and English. Our annotation scheme can easily be adapted for different kinds of applications dealing with emotion, and, being generic, can also be applied to other languages, We also discuss the two kinds of emotion representations used in our corpus, namely, holistic and componential representations, We find that the two representations have their own qualities and shortcomings and that choosing between them ultimately depends mainly on the application type.

Pichia pastoris strains carrying 1, 6, 12, and 18 copies of the porcine insulin precursor (PIP) gene, were employed to investigate the effects of sorbitol co-feeding with methanol on the physiology of the strains. Multicopy clones of the methylotrophic yeast were generated to vary the PIP gene dosage and recombinant proteins. Elevated gene dosage increased levels of the recombinant PIP protein when methanol served as the sole carbon and energy source i.e., an increase of 1.9% for a strain carrying 1 copy, 42.6% for a strain carrying 6 copies, 34.7% for a strain carrying 12 copies and 80.9% for a strain carrying 18 copies, respectively (using sorbitol co-feeding with methanol during the induction phase). However, it had no significant influence on a lower gene dosage strain (1 copy), but this approach affirmed enhancement in cell growth and PIP production for higher gene dosage strain (6, 12, and 18 copies) via using sorbitol co-feeding with methanol. Additionally, the co-feeding strategy could hold vital importance for recombinant protein production by a multi-copy P. pastoris system.

Objective Individuals with dementia are at a substantially elevated risk for mortality; however, few studies have examined multimorbidity patterns and determined the inter-relationship between these comorbidities in predicting mortality risk. Methods This is a prospective cohort study. Data from 6,556 patients who were diagnosed with dementia between 1997 and 2012 using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were analyzed. Latent class analysis was performed using 16 common chronic conditions to identify mortality risk among potentially different latent classes. Logistic regression was performed to determine the adjusted association of the determined latent classes with the 5-year mortality rate. Results With adjustment for age, a three-class model was identified, with 42.7% of participants classified as “low comorbidity class (cluster 1)”, 44.2% as “cardiometabolic multimorbidity class (cluster 2)”, and 13.1% as “FRINGED class (cluster 3, characterized by FRacture, Infection, NasoGastric feeding, and bleEDing over upper gastrointestinal tract).” The incidence of 5-year mortality was 17.6% in cluster 1, 26.7% in cluster 2, and 59.6% in cluster 3. Compared with cluster 1, the odds ratio for mortality was 9.828 (95% confidence interval [CI]=6.708–14.401; p<0.001) in cluster 2 and 1.582 (95% CI=1.281–1.953; p<0.001) in cluster 3.Conclusion Among patients with dementia, the risk for 5-year mortality was highest in the subpopulation characterized by fracture, urinary and pulmonary infection, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and nasogastric intubation, rather than cancer or cardiometabolic comorbidities. These findings may improve decision-making and advance care planning for patients with dementia.

Culture filtrates of 22 mushrooms were screened for extracellular prolyl oligopeptidase activity. Four strains with relatively high enzyme activity were all from inky cap mushrooms. The production of Coprinopsis clastophylla prolyl oligopeptidase was associated with the growth of the fungus and the enzyme was not released by cell lysis. The enzyme was purified 285-fold to a specific activity of 52.05 U/mg. It was purified to a single band on a native polyacrylamide gel. However, the enzyme separated into three bands on a sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel with mobility corresponding to molecular weights of approximately 84,60, and 26 kDa. The results of tandem mass spectrometric analysis revealed that the 60 kDa protein was likely a degradation product of the 84 kDa protein. The isoelectric point of the purified enzyme was 5.2. The purified enzyme had an optimal pH and temperature of 8.0 and 37°C, respectively. Diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP), p-chloromercuribenzoaic acid (PCMB), Hg2+, and Cu2+ strongly inhibited C. clastophylla prolyl oligopeptidase. This enzyme is a serine peptidase and one or more cysteine residues of the enzyme are close to the active site.
