Background/Aims: Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is widely accepted as a radical surgery for refractory ulcerative colitis (UC). Definite results on the appropriate pouch length for an evaluation of the risk-to-benefit ratio regarding technical complications and long-term quality of life (QOL) are still scarce. Methods: Data on UC patients who underwent IPAA from 2008 to 2022 in four well-established pouch centers affiliated to China UC Pouch Center Union were collected. Results: A total of 208 patients with a median follow-up time of 6.0 years (interquartile range, 2.3 to 9.0 years) were enrolled. The median lengths of the patients’ short and long pouches were 14.0 cm (interquartile range, 14.0 to 15.0 cm) and 22.0 cm (interquartile range, 20.0 to 24.0 cm), respectively. Patients with a short J pouch configuration were less likely to achieve significantly improved long-term QOL (p=0.015) and were prone to develop late postoperative complications (p=0.042), such as increased defecation frequency (p=0.003) and pouchitis (p=0.035). A short ileal pouch was an independent risk factor for the development of late postoperative complications (odds ratio, 3.100; 95% confidence interval, 1.519 to 6.329; p=0.002) and impaired long-term QOL improvement (odds ratio, 2.221; 95% confidence interval, 1.218 to 4.050, p=0.009). Conclusions: The length of the J pouch was associated with the improvement in long-term QOL and the development of late post-IPAA complications. A long J pouch configuration could be a considerable surgical option for pouch construction.

Insect neuropeptides are involved in many important developmental processes. Here, we cloned three neuro peptide genes (SfEH, SfETH, and SfCCAP) from Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) and analyzed the relative expression levels of these genes through Real-time Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) during different developmental stages and in different wing types of S. furcifera following exposure to sublethal concentrations (LC 10 and LC 25 ) of methylaminoavermectin benzoate. The results revealed that the three neuropeptide genes (SfEH, SfETH, and SfCCAP) of S. furcifera contained open reading frame sequences of 222, 636, and 408 bp, encoding 73, 211, and 135 amino acids, respectively. Moreover, the expression of SfEH and SfETH reached its peak on day 3 of the 5 th instar nymph stage, while the SfCCAP expressed pinnacle on 40 min after eclosion. Furthermore, the relative expression levels of the three genes were in the following order: SfEH, short-winged female > long-winged female > long-winged male; SfETH, long-winged female > short-winged female > longwinged male; and SfCCAP, short-winged female > long-winged male > short-winged female. Upon calculating the relative expression of the three peptide genes after 24 and 48 h of treatment with sublethal concentrations of methylaminoavermectin benzoate, it was found that the relative mRNA expression levels of SfEH and SfETH declined upon LC 10 treatment but increased upon LC 25 treatment. Meanwhile, the relative mRNA expression level of SfCCAP declined upon both LC 10 and LC 25 treatments. This result will help us understand the effects of pesticides on insect growth and development at the molecular level.

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Cortical plasticity is thought to be important for the establishment, consolidation, and retrieval of permanent memory. Hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP), a cellular mechanism of learning and memory, requires the activation of glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. In particular, it has been suggested that NR2A-containing NMDA receptors are involved in LTP induction, whereas NR2B-containing receptors are involved in LTD induction in the hippocampus. However, LTP in the prefrontal cortex is less well characterized than in the hippocampus. Here we report that the activation of the NR2B and NR2A subunits of the NMDA receptor is critical for the induction of cingulate LTP, regardless of the induction protocol. Furthermore, pharmacological or genetic blockade of the NR2B subunit in the cingulate cortex impaired the formation of early contextual fear memory. Our results demonstrate that the NR2B subunit of the NMDA receptor in the prefrontal cortex is critically involved in both LTP and contextual memory.</P>

Thermal error is a major factor influencing the accuracy of large precision electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine tools, especially when processing continuously for a long time. In this paper, a novel thermal analysis model was set up to identify the static and dynamic thermal behaviour of the large EDM machine tool. The thermal effect of multiple spark discharges is considered. An equivalent heat flux method was proposed to model the intermittent heat flux for the first time. Both the steady and transient analyses were applied to investigate the thermal equilibrium time of critical points. It is found that when the study point is far away from the heat source, the longer thermal equilibrium time is needed. And the thermal equilibrium time of the machine tool was also estimated. Verification experiment has been performed, indicating the simulation accuracy of 87 % on the temperature rise of the electrode. Moreover, on the displacement of the spindle, the simulated result matched with the experimental result in Z direction error of 7 %. Finally, suggestions for reducing the thermal deformation were proposed to further improve the machining accuracy of large EDM machine tools.

<P>Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are deemed as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, their practical application is hindered by existing drawbacks such as poor cycling life and low Coulombic efficiency due to the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). We herein present an <I>in situ</I> constructed VO2-VN binary host which combines the merits of ultrafast anchoring (VO2) with electronic conducting (VN) to accomplish smooth immobilization-diffusion-conversion of LiPSs. Such synchronous advantages have effectively alleviated the polysulfide shuttling, promoted the redox kinetics, and hence improved the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. As a result, the sulfur cathode based on the VO2-VN/graphene host exhibited an impressive rate capability with ∼1105 and 935 mA h g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 1C and 2C, respectively, and maintained long-term cyclability with a low capacity decay of 0.06% per cycle within 800 cycles at 2C. More remarkably, favorable cyclic stability can be attained with a high sulfur loading (13.2 mg cm<SUP>−2</SUP>). Even at an elevated temperature (50 °C), the cathodes still delivered superior rate capacity. Our work emphasizes the importance of immobilization-diffusion-conversion of LiPSs toward the rational design of high-load and long-life Li-S batteries.</P>

For the development of novel hepatoprotective agents, C11, C28, C2,3,23 or C2,23,28 functional groups on asiatic acid were modified, and their hepatoprotective effects were evaluated. Most of the prepared compounds displayed potent hepatoprotective activities against CCl4- and galactosamine (GaIN)-induced hepatotoxicity. Especially, compounds 16 and 20 showed the most significant hepatoprotective effects against GaIN-induced hepatotoxicity (54.2% and 46.4% protection at 50 mM, respectively).

Recently, we have reported that 2-bromopropane might have an immunotoxic potential in rats when exposed for 28 days. In the present studies, the possibility of 2i-deoxyguanosine abduct formation by 2- bromopropane was investigated in vitro to elucidate molecular mechanism of 2-bromopropane-induced immunosuppression. $N^7-Guanine adduct$ of 2'-bromopropane (i.e., $N^7-isopropyl$ guanine) was chemically synthesized and structurally characterized by analysis of UV,$^1H-NMR,{\;}^{13}C-NMR$, COSY and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry to use as a reference material. Incubation of 2'-deoxyguanosine with an excess amount of 2-bromopropane in PBS buffer solution, pH 7.4, at $37^{\circ}C$ for 16 h, followed by a thermal hydrolysis, produced a detectable amount of $N^7-isopropyl$ guanine by an HPLC and UV analysis. The present results suggest that 2-bromopropane might form a DNA adduct in $N^7-position$ of 2'-deoxyguanosine at 3 Physiological condition.

Addressable field emitter arrays (FEAs) have important applications in vacuum electronic devices. However, it is important to integrate nanowire emitters into a gated structure without influencing the device structure and maintain the excellent field emission properties of nanowire emitters in the FEAs after the fabrication process. In this study, gate-structure ZnO nanowire FEAs were fabricated by a microfabrication process. The structure combines a planar gate and an under-gate, which is compatible with the preparation of ZnO nanowire emitters. The effect of electrode materials on the field emission properties of ZnO nanowires was studied using a diode structure, and it was found that ZnO nanowire pads on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrode showed better field emission performance compared with chromium (Cr) electrode. In addition, effective emission current modulation by the gate voltage was achieved and the addressing capability was demonstrated by integrating the ZnO nanowire FEAs in a vacuum-encapsulated field emission display. The reported technique could be a promising route to achieve large area addressable FEAs.

For the development of novel antitumor agents, we designed and synthesized terpyridines, and their biological activities were evaluated. Although most of the newly prepared terpyridines showed strong cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines, [2,2';6',2"]-terpyridine displayed the most significant cytotoxicity.

본 연구는 학사경고를 받은 재한 중국인 유학생들의 대학생활 경험을 심층적으로 탐색함으로써 중국유학생들의 대학생활 적응과 관련된 요인을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 A대학교에 재학 중인 중국유학생 8명을 대상으로 2017년3월 중순부터 2017년6월 중순까지 심층면담 후, 녹음 자료를 전사하고 그 내용에 대한 질적 사례분석을 실시한 결과, 중국인 유학생들이 대학생활 동안 경험하게 되는 핵심적인 어려움을 문화 및 환경의 변화, 언어적 장벽, 심리적 어려움, 새로운 대인관계이라는 네 가지 주제로 범주화할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 중국인 유학생들이 한국의 대학생활 동안 어떤 경험을 하게 되는지 그들의 목소리를 통해 보여주었으며, 이러한 연구결과가 재한 중국인 유학생들이 대학생활에 효과적으로 적응하도록 돕는 교육 및 상담적 접근에 시사하는 바를 논의하였다. The study aims to explore the underlying experience of Chinese college students receiving academic probation in Korea. To this end, the paper conducted a qualitative case study on eight overseas Chinese students being placed on academic probation at A University in Seoul from mid-March, 2017 to mid-June 2017, with the method of in-depth interviews on their academic experience. The results of the analysis are clarified into four major themes: cultural and environmental changes, language barriers, psychological difficulties, and new interpersonal relationships. The research provides a reliable frame for understanding the differences between Chinese and Korean education, as well as the fundamentals for overseas students adaptation to a foreign culture and academic life. Besides, it provides a basic reference for developing relevant countermeasures and programs to help future overseas college students in their adaptation in Korea.
