        Assessment of nephrotoxicity of herbal medicine containing aristolochic acid in mice

        Background/Aims: It is undetermined if herbal medicines (HM) containing aristolochic acid (AA)-containing have similar nephrotoxicity to AA itself. Methods: We administered HM containing a high concentration of AA for 5 days (short-term study) or a low concentration of AA for 30 days (long-term study) to C57BL/6 mice; for comparison, same dose of AA compound was used as controls. Results: The nephrotoxicity in the HM- and AA-treated mice was compared in terms of renal function, histopathology, oxidative stress, apoptotic cell death, and mitochondrial damage. Short-term HM treatment resulted in acute kidney injury (marked renal dysfunction, acute tubular necrosis, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin [NGAL] expression) in which the severity of renal dysfunction and histopathology was comparable with that induced by the administration of AA alone. Long-term HM treatment resulted in features of chronic kidney disease (CKD, mild renal dysfunction and tubular atrophy and dilatation). No significant differences in these parameters were observed between the HM- and AA-treated mice. HM-induced oxidative stress (8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine and manganese- dependent superoxide dismutase expression) and apoptotic cell death (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling [TUNEL]-positive cells and active caspase-3 expression) were similar in HM- and AA-treated mice in the short-term and long-term studies. Mitochondrial injury, evaluated by electron microscopy, was also similar in HM- and AA-treated mice in the short-term and long-term studies. Conclusions: The nephrotoxic potential of HM containing AA was similar to that of AA itself.

        시토키닌 활성물질 Thidiazuron 처리가 포도 '거봉'(Vitis labruscana)의 果粒肥大 및 品質에 미치는 影響

        본 실험은 새로운 비 punne계 사이토카이닌 활성 물질인 thidiazuron(TDZ)이 포도 '거봉'의 과립 중 및 과실 품질에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 실시하였으며 대조 약제로 forchlorfenuron(CPPU)을 이용하였다. 생리적 낙화 후 5일의 TDZ를 처리는 과방의 무핵과립의 착립수를 증가시켜 과방중은 유의하게 증가하였으나 과립중은 증가하지 않았다. 그러나 낙화후 10 또는 15일 처리는 무핵과립의 착립수를 감소시켜 과립중이 유의하게 증가하였다. 따라서 TDZ처리는 생리적 낙과가 어느 정도 진행된 만개 10~15일 후에 처리하는 것이 유리하였다. GA 25mg·L^(-1)처리도 과립중 증가에 효과적이었으나 TDZ와 GA혼용 처리는 각 약제를 단용 처리할 때보다 과립중 증대 효과가 더욱 컸다. 두 약제간에는 TDZ가 대조약제인 CPPU가보다 과립비대 증진 효과가 더욱 컸으며 TDZ처리 농도가 20㎎·L^(-1)에서도 약해는 발생하지 않았으나 착색과 성숙은 더욱 지연되는 것으로 나타나 적정 처리농도는 5~10㎎·l^(-1)이었다. This experiment was conducted to find the effect of a non-purine cytokinin, thidiazuron(TDZ), on the increase of berry size and fruit quality in 'Kyoho' grapes. For the comparison, the effect of forchlorfenuron(CPPU) was also examined The number of shot berries per cluster was significantly increased by the application of TDZ at 5 days after calyptra fall, resulting in the increase of cluster weight but no increase of each berry weight. The increase of berry weight was found when TDZ was applied at 10 to 15 days after calyptra fall. Gibberellin(GA 25㎎·L^(-1)) was also effective on the increase berry weight and the combined application of GA and TDZ further increased the berry weight. TDZ showed stronger effect on the increase of berry weight than CPPU at the same concentration. Berry ripening was more delayed at higher concentration of TDZ but no chemical injury was observed even at 20㎎·L^(-1). Results indicated that TDZ was effective on the quality improvement through berry weight increase and the recommended concentration TDZ for 'Kyoho' gapes was 5 to 10㎎·L^(-1).

      • Synergistic reinforcing of poly(lactic acid)-based systems by polybutylene succinate and nano-calcium carbonate

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) ternary systems were prepared by the solution blending of PLA, polybutylene succinate (PBS), and nano-CaCO<SUB>3</SUB>. The effects of PBS and nano-CaCO<SUB>3</SUB> on the thermal stability, fracture toughness, mechanical properties, and morphology of PLA were investigated using several techniques. The morphology of the systems was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fracture toughness and flexural strength of PLA were improved by the introduction of PBS and further enhanced by the addition of nano-CaCO<SUB>3</SUB>. The elastic modulus of PLA decreased with the addition of PBS alone, whereas the elastic modulus increased with the simultaneous addition of PBS and nano-CaCO<SUB>3</SUB>.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>The fracture toughness of PLA was improved by the introduction of PBS and further enhanced by the addition of nano-CaCO<SUB>3</SUB>.</P>

        Copolymerization of 4′-vinylbenzo-15-crown-5 with Di(ethylene glycol) Ethyl Ether Acrylate

        Radical copolymerization behavior of 4'-vinylbenzo-15-crown-5, a vinyl monomer having a pendant 15-membared crown ether unit (VCE) with di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate (DEGEEA) was carried out in toluene solution using 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The copolymers were characterized by means of FT-IR, $^1{H-NMR}$, and $^{13}{C-NMR}$ . The reactivity ratio of VCE and DEGEEA, determined by Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos method, gave values 0.55 for VCE, and 0.11 for DEGEEA respectively.

        Synthesis of N-4-vinylbenzyl-monoaza-m-phenylene-34-crown-11 and Its Copolymerization with Styrene

        A functional monomer, containing a 34-membered monoazacrown ether unit (VACE) as a pendant group has been synthesized by using resorcinol, tetraethylene glycol, p-tolenesulfonyl chloride and 4-vinylbenzyl chloride as starting materials. The product structure was characterized by means of FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$, EA and MS. Free radical homopolymerized VACE or copolymerized VACE with styrene (ST) by the conventional radical initiator 2,2'-azobis (isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) in toluene solution to afford corresponding polymers. The reactivity ratio of VACE and ST, determined by Fineman-Ross method, gave values 0.6 for VACE, and 1.4 for ST, respectively.

        PET Fabric Supported Fixed Site Carrier Membrane for Selective Metal ion Transport

        Development of a novel fixed site carrier membrane (FCM), supported by PET fabric for metal ion separation is reported. The membranes were prepared by dipping PET fabric into the methylene chloride solution of Poly(5-vinyl-m-phe-nylene-m'-phenylene-32-crown-10) (P(VCE)), a polymeric metal ion carrier. It was found that the flux of mono-valent metal ion transported across the membrane is signif=cantly differed from each other and the flux decreases in the order $Cs^+$>$Rb^+$>$K^+$>$Na^+$>$Li^+$ irrespective to the anion except perchlorate anion. It was explained in terms of the stability of the complex, formed by crown ether unit of the P(VCE) and the various metal ions, meanwhile, the lower rate of transport in the presence of perchlorate anion was ascribed to its low hydrophilicity.

        Polymer matrices for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites

        Carbon fibers (CFs) have high service temperature, strength, and stiffness, and low weight. They are widely used as reinforcing materials in advanced polymer composites. The role of the polymer matrix in the composites is to provide bulk to the composite laminate and transfer load between the fibers. The interface between the CF and the resin matrix plays a critical role in controlling the overall properties of the composites. This paper aims to review the synthesis, properties, and applications of polymer matrices, such as thermosetting and thermoplastic resins.

        The Thioacetate-Functionalized Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au: Toward High-Performance Ion-Selective Electrode for Ag<sup>+</sup>

        Two classes of morpholino-substitued thioacetate have been successfully synthesized and their electrochemical properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au electrode are measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The barrier property of the SAMs-modified surfaces is evaluated by using potassium ferro/ferri cyanide. The results suggest that the arenethioacetate forms higher-quality close-packed blocking monolayers in comparison with alkanethioacetate. Furthermore, it has shown that the barrier properties of these monolayers can be significantly improved by mixed SAMs formation with decanethiol. From our experimental results we find that the electron transfer reaction of $[Fe(CN)_6]^{3/4-}$ redox couple occurs predominantly through the pinholes and defects present in the SAM and both SAMs show a good and fast capacity in recognition for $Ag^+$. The morphological and elementary composition have also been examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).
