The Phytotoxic Effects of Selenium–Mercury Interactions on Root Growth in Brassica rapa (LvLing)

Rapid industrial and agricultural development has dramatically increased the emission of selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) into the environment. Combined soil pollution by Se and Hg poses a potential threat to crop production. However, no toxic effects of Hg–Se interactions on plants have been reported previously. In this study, we investigated the effects of Hg–Se interactions on biochemical and physiological indices in the roots of Brassica rapa (LvLing). Seedlings were treated hydroponically with solutions of mercury chloride (1 μM), sodium selenite (4 μM), or a combination of the two. Combined Hg+Se treatment significantly inhibited root growth, reduced root biomass, and enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde accumulation and led to a loss of plasma membrane integrity. The combined treatment increased glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and peroxidase activity, reduced superoxide dismutase activity, and had no effect on catalase activity. In addition, we detected increased glutathione concentrations in root tips and reduced ascorbic acid concentrations in the presence of Hg+Se relative to individual treatments with these elements. Thus, Hg–Se interactions enhanced oxidative injury, cell death, and phytotoxicity in B. rapa roots.

MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) play important roles in coordinating a variety of cellular processes and abnormal expression has been linked to the occurrence of several cancers. The miRNA miR-451 is downregulated in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) cells, suggested by several research groups including our own. In this study, synthetic miR-451 mimics were transfected into the SW620 human CRC cell line using Lipofectamine 2000 and expression of miR-451 was analyzed by real time PCR, while expression of CAB39, LKB1, AMPK, AKT, PI3K and Bcl2 was analyzed by Western blot, and cell growth was detected by MTT assay. In comparison to the controls, a significant increase in the expression of miR-451 was associated with significantly decreased expression of CAB39, LKB1, AMPK, AKT, PI3K and Bcl2. The capacity of cell proliferation was significantly decreased by miR-451 expression, which also inhibited cell growth. Our study confirmed that miR-451 has a repressive role in CRC cells by inhibiting cell growth through down-regulating the P13K/AKT pathway.

Nano-crystals embedded in glass always have interesting quantum effects, while nano-crystal patterns may have wide potential applications in preparing PIC, OEIC and other types of electronic and optoelectronic devices. A direct current electric field, accompanied by heat treatment, was applied on tellurite or silicate glass sheets. The silver ions in a diffused film were introduced into the glass matrix under a high-voltage electric field, instead of supplied during glass melting. The direct diffusion of metal ions, the nucleation and crystallization of nano-crystals in the glass were well controlled by the electric field accompanied by heat treatment. It was found that silver nano-crystal patterns can be transfer printed into tellurite and silicate glass sheets with both patterned diffusion and patterned crystallization. The nonlinear loads exist widely in practical engineering applications. Due to the nonlinear characteristic of the loads, the nonlinear loads firstly need to be linearized to a resistor with constant value using the traditional stability analysis method based on the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion and the method based on the stroboscopic map. In this paper, a novel stability analysis method is proposed based on the harmonic balance and Floquet theory for the inverters with nonlinear loads, which can present all characteristics of the nonlinear loads. In detail, the model of the inverter with nonlinear loads is established. Following, the approximate analytical periodic expressions of the inverter with nonlinear loads are obtained by using the harmonic balance method; and then, the stability analysis of the above inverter versus PI parameters is carried out according to Floquet theory. Finally, simulation and experimental results are given to verify the accuracy of the stability analysis method proposed in this paper.

Ni(1−x)ZnxFe2O4 (x = 0 − 1.0) ceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The samples have been investigated for their structures, microstructures, dielectric and magnetic properties in detail. A pure spinel crystal structure was obtained in the sintering temperature range of 1150-1250oC. The dielectric properties of part samples present a Debye relaxation phenomenon. The Curie temperature reduces linearly with the zinc concentrations. The magnetic permeability and saturation magnetization increase firstly to high values and then reduce with the zinc concentration. But the coercivity shows a different behavior. It increases at first and then decreases for the samples sintered at 1200oC while it descends monotonically with the zinc concentration for the samples sintered at 1250oC.
Cloning and functional characterization of two GsSnRK1 gene promoters from wild soybean

Sucrose non-fermenting-related protein kinase 1 (SnRK1) belongs to a plant serine/threonine protein kinase family, and is part of a large interactive network of signaling pathways in plants to regulate many aspects of growth and development, and its gene expressions are highly responsive to multiple external stimuli. To functionally characterize the role of different SnRK1 members in wild soybean and identify the expression patterns of novel SnRK1 promoters for transgenic research, in this study, we performed an in silico analysis of the SnRK1 gene family in wild soybean and found GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 are main SnRK1 isoforms in wild soybean. The promoter fragments of both GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 were isolated, and a series of 5′-deletion and the full-length versions of both GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 promoters were fused with GUS reporter gene to generate expression vectors. The GUS activities in different tissues of seedling and adult growth stages of transgenic Arabidopsis plants were determined, and the GUS activities in transgenic Arabidopsis plants under NaCl, NaHCO3, PEG, ABA, MeJA and SA were also analyzed. The results showed that GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 genes have different expression patterns and both promoters may contain enhancers and silencers. In addition, NaCl, NaHCO3, ABA, MeJA, and PEG treatments enhanced, whereas SA treatment decreased the GUS activity under the control of both GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 promoters, which may be due to the distributions of various cis-elements in both GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 promoter regions. These results will contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of GsSnRK1 genes in response to various abiotic stresses, and as stress-inducible promoters, GsSnRK1.1 and GsSnRK1.2 promoters can be candidates for practical application in agriculture.
Processing Errors in an On-Machine Measurement Method Based on the Adaptive Triangular Mesh

A novel, on-machine method applying the adaptive triangular mesh sampling measuring process on automotive parts mold was elaborated in order to obtain the processing errors of free-form surfaces. This process has firstly generated a triangular mesh through the advancing front method. This has allowed us to extract the coordinate data corresponding to the mesh nodes. Subsequently, the processed surfaces were fitted by the mean of NURBS surface reconstruction. The final stage has employed the determination of the normal distance between the reconstructed and theoretical surfaces using the generalized Newtonian method, which has eventually allowed us to obtain the free-form surface machining errors as well as the model surface profile errors corresponding to the experimental process. Therefore, we have effectively determined the free-form surface processing errors by using the processing surface reconstruction methodology based on the adaptive triangular mesh sampling.

Three iridium complexes of (dfppy)2Ir(DAPB), (dfppy)2Ir(DAPB), and (dfppy)2Ir(DAPB) were synthesized by using phosphine carbonylimide derivative as auxiliary ligand and fluoro?/trifluoromethyl substituted 2-phenylpyridine derivatives as primary ligands. Their quantum efficiency range from 19.4% to 38.5%, and show strong rigidochromic effect. The maximum emission wavelengths of solid-state fluorescence have remarkable red shifts from 39 to 55?nm compared with these in CH2Cl2.
