        Regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 protein expression by 1α , 25-(OH)2D3 during osteoclast differentiation

        To investigate 1α,25-(OH)2D3 regulation of matrixmetalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) protein expression duringosteoclast formation and differentiation, receptor activator ofnuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) and macrophagecolony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) were administered toinduce the differentiation of RAW264.7 cells into osteoclasts. The cells were incubated with different concentrations of1α,25-(OH)2D3 during culturing, and cell proliferation wasmeasured using the methylthiazol tetrazolium method. Osteoclast formation was confirmed using tartrate-resistantacid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and assessing bone lacunarresorption. MMP-9 protein expression levels were measuredwith Western blotting. We showed that 1α,25-(OH)2D3inhibited RAW264.7 cell proliferation induced by RANKLand M-CSF, increased the numbers of TRAP-positiveosteoclasts and their nuclei, enhanced osteoclast boneresorption, and promoted MMP-9 protein expression in aconcentration-dependent manner. These findings indicatethat 1α,25-(OH)2D3 administered at a physiological relevantconcentration promoted osteoclast formation and couldregulate osteoclast bone metabolism by increasing MMP-9protein expression during osteoclast differentiation.

        Quantitative Assessment on the Variation of Compressibility of Wenzhou Marine Clay During Destructuration

        A series of oedometer test were performed on both undisturbed and remolded specimens of Wenzhou marine clay to quantitatively investigate the degradation of soil structure during compression. The laboratory tests show that the swell index of both natural and remolded Wenzhou marine clay increase with the increase in consolidation stress. Hence, the normalizing parameter ‘swell sensitivity’, termed as the ratio of the remolded to the natural swelling index, can only be regarded as a qualitative parameter. On the other hand, the normalized stress sensitivity has a good parabolic relationship with the consolidation stress during destructuration. This result indicates that the stress sensitivity can be used as a quantitative interpretation of the degradation of soil structure for natural Wenzhou marine clay. Comparison between stress sensitivity and additional void ratio during destructuration shows that the variation of soil structure during destructuration represented by stress sensitivity and additional void ratio are essentially the same. In addition, the parameter used in formulating the variation of stress sensitivity with the stress level is correlated with natural void ratio and void ratio at liquid limit.

        Preparation of silver Nano-Crystal patterns in oxide glasses under electric field accompanied by heat treatment

        Nano-crystals embedded in glass always have interesting quantum effects, while nano-crystal patterns may have wide potential applications in preparing PIC, OEIC and other types of electronic and optoelectronic devices. A direct current electric field, accompanied by heat treatment, was applied on tellurite or silicate glass sheets. The silver ions in a diffused film were introduced into the glass matrix under a high-voltage electric field, instead of supplied during glass melting. The direct diffusion of metal ions, the nucleation and crystallization of nano-crystals in the glass were well controlled by the electric field accompanied by heat treatment. It was found that silver nano-crystal patterns can be transfer printed into tellurite and silicate glass sheets with both patterned diffusion and patterned crystallization.       • Bayesian Network Model for XML Document Ranking

        As more and more data is described, stored, exchanged and represented by XML, the abilities of information retrieval for XML document become increasingly important. However, the retrieval results to users are quite large. This paper gives a Bayesian network‐based model for ranking these large results. Each XML document is modeled through a Bayesian network, which can handle both structure and content for the document. And then this paper presents the inference for the probability of each document on the given query. Finally documents are ranked according to the probabilities in descent.

        COORDINATED COLLISION AVOIDANCE FOR CONNECTED VEHICLES USING RELATIVE KINETIC ENERGY DENSITY

        Vehicular collision often leads to serious casualties and traffic congestion, and the consequences are worse for multiple-vehicle collision. Many previous works on collision avoidance have only focused on the case for two consecutive vehicles using on-board sensors, which ignored the influence on upstream traffic flow. This paper proposes a novel coordinated collision avoidance (CCA) strategy for connected vehicles, which has potential to avoid collision and smooth the braking behaviors of multiple vehicles, leading to an improvement of traffic smoothness. Specifically, model predictive control (MPC) framework is used to formulate the CCA into an optimization problem, where the objective is to minimize the total relative kinetic energy density (RKED) among connected vehicles. Monte Carlo simulations are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed CCA strategy by comparison with other two strategies. Among all the three control strategies, the RKED based control strategy shows the best performance of collision avoidance, including the best crash prevention rates (99.2 % on dry asphalt road and 90.5 % on wet asphalt road) and the best control of distance headways between vehicles.

        The Phytotoxic Effects of Selenium–Mercury Interactions on Root Growth in Brassica rapa (LvLing)

        Rapid industrial and agricultural development has dramatically increased the emission of selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) into the environment. Combined soil pollution by Se and Hg poses a potential threat to crop production. However, no toxic effects of Hg–Se interactions on plants have been reported previously. In this study, we investigated the effects of Hg–Se interactions on biochemical and physiological indices in the roots of Brassica rapa (LvLing). Seedlings were treated hydroponically with solutions of mercury chloride (1 μM), sodium selenite (4 μM), or a combination of the two. Combined Hg+Se treatment significantly inhibited root growth, reduced root biomass, and enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde accumulation and led to a loss of plasma membrane integrity. The combined treatment increased glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and peroxidase activity, reduced superoxide dismutase activity, and had no effect on catalase activity. In addition, we detected increased glutathione concentrations in root tips and reduced ascorbic acid concentrations in the presence of Hg+Se relative to individual treatments with these elements. Thus, Hg–Se interactions enhanced oxidative injury, cell death, and phytotoxicity in B. rapa roots.

        Inhibitory effects of osteoprotegerin on osteoclast formation and function under serum-free conditions

        The purpose of this study was to determine whether osteoprotegerin (OPG) could affect osteoclat differentiation and activation under serum-free conditions. Both duck embryo bone marrow cells and RAW264.7 cells were incubated with macrophage colony stimulatory factor (M-CSF) and receptor activator for nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) in serum-free medium to promote osteoclastogenesis. During cultivation, 0,10, 20, 50, and 100 ng/mL OPG were added to various groups of cells. Osteoclast differentiation and activation were monitored via tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining,filamentous-actin rings analysis, and a bone resorption assay. Furthermore, the expression osteoclast-related genes, such as TRAP and receptor activator for nuclear factor κB (RANK),that was influenced by OPG in RAW264.7 cells was examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction. In summary,findings from the present study suggested that M-CSF with RANKL can promote osteoclast differentiation and activation,and enhance the expression of TRAP and RANK mRNA in osteoclasts. In contrast, OPG inhibited these activities under serum-free conditions.

        Influence of nickel-zinc ratio on microstructure, magnetic and dielectric properties of Ni(1−x)ZnxFe2O4 ferrites

        Ni(1−x)ZnxFe2O4 (x = 0 − 1.0) ceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The samples have been investigated for their structures, microstructures, dielectric and magnetic properties in detail. A pure spinel crystal structure was obtained in the sintering temperature range of 1150-1250oC. The dielectric properties of part samples present a Debye relaxation phenomenon. The Curie temperature reduces linearly with the zinc concentrations. The magnetic permeability and saturation magnetization increase firstly to high values and then reduce with the zinc concentration. But the coercivity shows a different behavior. It increases at first and then decreases for the samples sintered at 1200oC while it descends monotonically with the zinc concentration for the samples sintered at 1250oC.
