Colorectal Cancer Concealment Predicts a Poor Survival: A Retrospective Study

Objectives: Understanding the situation of cancer awareness which doctors give to patients might lead to prognostic prediction in cases of of colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: Subsets of 10,779 CRC patients were used to screen the risk factors from the Cancer Registry in Pudong New Area in cancer awareness, age, TNM stage, and gender. Survival of the patients was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and assessed by Cox regression analysis. The views of cancer awareness in doctors and patients were surveyed by telephone or household. Results: After a median observation time of 1,616 days (ranging from 0 to 4,083 days) of 10,779 available patients, 2,596 of the 4,561 patients with cancer awareness survived, whereas 2,258 of the 5,469 patients without cancer awareness and 406 of the 749 patients without information on cancer awareness died of the disease. All-cause and cancer-specific survival were poorer for the patients without cancer awareness than those with (P < 0.001 for each, log-rank test). Cox multivariate regression analysis showed that cancer concealment cases had significantly lower cancer-specific survival (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.299; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.200-1.407)and all-cause survival (HR = 1.324; 95 % CI: 1.227-1.428). Furthermore, attitudes of cancer awareness between doctors and patients were significantly different (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Cancer concealment, not only late-stage tumor and age, is associated with a poor survival of CRC patients.
A Novel Distributed Equivalent Circuit Model for Single-Core Cables

The number of cables used for urban power supply increases rapidly. The sheath current in these cables, which is generated via induction, produces a current loss. When the situation is serious, the ground lead and the middle connector of the cable will be burned. In this paper, the existing single-core cable equivalent circuit model is used to calculate the sheath current of a 3-phase cable under the condition of non-transposition and cross connection. By comparing the calculated results with the simulation and the experimental results, it is found that the current distribution law for the sheath, which was obtained using the existing model, difers substantially from both the simulation and actual measurements. The error reason of the existing model is revealed, and it is found that the magnitude and phase of the current in the metal sheath of the cable varies with the position under the combined efect of distributed capacitances in the cable and the core-current fux, especially for a 3-phase cross connection, each section of the cable does not meet Kirchhof’s laws, but the sheath electric current in the existing models are considered equal everywhere. Therefore, a novel cable equivalent model is proposed in this paper, which is based on a distributed circuit, and an equation to calculate the sheath current is derived. The model presented in this paper corrects the problems of the existing model, which can be applied to power system, subway, high-speed rail, and any application of single-core cables.

Recently, there has been a growing body of evidence showing that cellular microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in virus-host interactions. Numerous studies have focused on analyses of the expression profiles of cellular miRNAs, but the expression patterns of Dicer, which is responsible for the generation of miRNAs, have only rarely been explored in Gallus gallus. We developed a duplex realtime reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) assay for the relative quantification of the mRNAs of Dicer and β-actin in G. gallus. To apply this method, the expression of Dicer in avian cells after infection with avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) was detected using our established duplex real-time RT-PCR. The duplex realtime RT-PCR assay is sufficiently sensitive, specific, accurate, reproducible, and cost-effective for the detection of Dicer in G. gallus. Furthermore, this study, for the first time, demonstrated that ALV-J can induce differential expression of Dicer mRNA in the ALV-J-infected cells.
ent-Abietane Diterpenoids from Isodon xerophilus

Three new ent-abietanoids, named xerophilusins XIV–XVI, and four known analogues, as well as four known chemical constituents were isolated from the leaves of Isodon xerophilus. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic studies, and comparison with literature data. In addition, the cytotoxic activity of the ent-abietanoids against chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562), stomach adenocarcinoma (MKN45), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) human cell lines was investigated and no activities were observed.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was established to analyze 36 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) samples collected from three species (Bupleurum chinense DC., B. scorzonerifolium Willd. and B. smithii Wolff.). Addition of trifluoroacetic acid into the mobile phase resulted in fingerprint chromatograms with stable baselines. There were thirty-two characteristic peaks in the standard fingerprint of B. chinense DC. Different recognition pattern methods, including similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) were utilized to analyze the 36 samples based on the contents of chemical constituents. Consistent results from SA, HCA and PCA analysis illustrated the rationalisation for why B. smithii Wolff. was not quoted in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and classified samples were in agreement with their species. PLS-DA loading plots showed the chemical markers which had the most influences on the separation among different species. However, SA, HCA and PCA could not differentiate between wild and cultivated B. chinense DC. as well as between samples from different provinces. HPLC fingerprint in combination with chemometric techniques provided a very flexible and reliable method for homogeneity evaluation and quality assessment of traditional Chinese medicine.

Software defined networking (SDN) is revolutionizing thetelecommunication networking industry by providing flexible andefficient management. Because of energy cost and environmentalconcerns, green networking technologies are being developed to increasingenergy efficiency and making use of renewable energy, forboth wired and wireless networks. Relay nodes (RNs) are widelyused in wireless networks to increasing energy efficiency as well asthe network coverage. In this paper, we consider an SDN-enabledwireless relay network, in which the relay nodes are powered by renewableenergy. In the beginning, all the users can connect to a BSor an RN in the most energy efficient way, however, the availabilityof renewable energy is unpredictable, and users connected to anRN will have to be handed over to base stations (BSs) when there isnot enough renewable energy to power the RN. There are also occasionswhen an RN harvested more renewable energy than requiredto server the users connected to it, in these cases users connectedto BS or other RNs can be transferred to connect through this RN,otherwise the harvested surplus renewable energy will be wastedas it cannot be stored.We transform the problem of optimizing theuse of harvested renewable energy into a flow-table managementproblem. A model of harvested renewable energy available for RNsis built first, then we propose a dynamic flow-table updating strategy(DFTUS), which is driven by the availability of renewable energy,to maximize the use of the harvested renewable energy andthus minimize the use of traditional energy. DFTUS can be integratedas an application on top of an SDN controller. Simulationresults show that DFTUS can make more efficient use of renewableenergy thus make the overall relay network more energy efficientcompared with other routing strategies such as the capacity limitedstrategy (CLS) and the optimal path strategy (OPS).
Relationship Between the SER Treatment Period and Prognosis of Patients with Small Cell Lung Cancer

Purpose: To explore the relationship between SER (time between the start of any treatment and the end of radiation therapy) and the survival of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer. Materials and Methods: Between 2008 and 2013, 135 cases of limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) treated with consecutively curative chemoradiotherapy were included in this retrospective analysis. In terms of SER, patients were divided into early radiotherapy group (SER<30 days, n=76) and late radiotherapy group ($SER{\geq}30$ days, n=59) with a cut-off of SER 30 days. Outcomes of the two groups were compared for overall survival. Results: For all analyzable patients, median follow-up time was 23.8 months and median overall survival time was 16.8 months. Although there was no significant differences in distant metastasis free survival between the two groups, patients in early radiotherapy group had a significantly better PFS (p=0.003) and OS (p=0.000). Conclusions: A short SER may be a good prognostic factor for LD-SCLC patients treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy.
Intermedins A and B; New Metabolites from Schisandra propinqua var. intermedia

A new dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan, intermedin A (1), and a new natural bisabolane sesquiterpenoid, intermedin B (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Schisandra propinqua var. intermedia. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopical analysis.
