        Wrinkled rGO Sheets-Wrapped Carbon Fibers with High Tensile Strength and Excellent Electrochemical Stability as Anodes for Structural Li-Ion Battery

        Herein, we report a hierarchical structure formed by wrinkled reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets-wrapped carbon fiber via a facile and efficient electrostatic self-assembly method and subsequent annealing treatment. For this material, the Weibull scale parameter is 4.77 GPa. After 100 cycles, the rGO@CF retains 91% of its second charge capacity at 50mA· g -1, corresponding to a capacity fading of only 0.09% per cycle. Thus, this structural anode material exhibits enhanced capacity, high initial Coulombic efficiency and high tensile strength. Meanwhile, the carbon fiber and interweaved rGO sheets together form the whole conductive networks to provide multichannel highways for charge transfer (lithium-ion diffusion and electron transport) during discharge–charge processes, promising excellent electrochemical performance of this structural anode material.

        Designing a Magnetically Controlled Soft Gripper with Versatile Grasping Based on Magneto-Active Elastomer

        A composite bionic soft gripper integrated with electromagnets and magneto-active elastomers is designed bycombining the structure of the human hand and the snake’s behavior of enhancing friction by actively adjustingthe scales. A silicon-based polymer containing magnetized hard magnetic particles is proposed as a soft finger,and it can be reversibly bent by adjusting the magnetic field. Experiments show that the length, width, andheight of rectangular soft fingers and the volume ratio of neodymium–iron–boron have different effects onbending angle. The flexible fingers with 20 vol% are the most efficient, which can bend to 90° when themagnetic field is 22 mT. The flexible gripper with four fingers can pick up 10.51 g of objects at the magneticfield of 105 mT. In addition, this composite bionic soft gripper has excellent magnetron performance, and itcan change surface like snakes and operate like human hands. This research may help develop soft devices formagnetic field control and try to provide new solutions for soft grasping.

        Prevalence of feline calicivirus and the distribution of serum neutralizing antibody against isolate strains in cats of Hangzhou, China

        Background: Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common pathogen of felids, and FCV vaccination is regularly practiced. The genetic variability and antigenic diversity of FCV hinder the effective control and prevention of infection by vaccination. Improved knowledge of the epidemiological characteristics of FCV should assist in the development of more effective vaccines. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of FCV in a population of cats with FCV-suspected clinical signs in Hangzhou and to demonstrate the antigenic and genetic relationships between vaccine status and representative isolated FCV strains. Methods: Cats (n = 516) from Hangzhou were investigated between 2018 and 2020. The association between risk factors and FCV infection was assessed. Phylogenetic analyses based on a capsid coding sequence were performed to identify the genetic relationships between strains. In vitro virus neutralization tests were used to assess antibody levels against isolated FCV strains in client-owned cats. Results: The FCV-positive rate of the examined cats was 43.0%. Risk factors significantly associated with FCV infection were vaccination status and oral symptoms. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a radial phylogeny with no evidence of temporal or countrywide clusters. There was a significant difference in the distribution of serum antibody titers between vaccinated and unvaccinated cats. Conclusions: This study revealed a high prevalence and genetic diversity of FCV in Hangzhou. The results indicate that the efficacy of FCV vaccination is unsatisfactory. More comprehensive and refined vaccination protocols are an urgent and unmet need.

        Experimental study on solidification of uranium tailings by microbial grouting combined with electroosmosis

        The present microbial reinforcement of rock and soil exhibits limitations, such as uneven reinforcement effectiveness and low calcium carbonate generation rate, resulting in limited solidification strength. This study introduces electroosmosis as a standard microbial grouting reinforcement technique and investigates its solidification effects on microbial-reinforced uranium tailings. The most effective electroosmosis effect on uranium tailings occurs under a potential gradient of 1.25 V/cm. The findings indicate that a weak electric field can effectively promote microbial growth and biological activity and accelerate bacterial metabolism. The largest calcium carbonate production occurred under the gradient of 0.5 V/cm, featuring a good crystal combination and the best cementation effect. Staged electroosmosis and electrode conversion efficiently drive the migration of anions and cations. Under electroosmosis, the cohesion of uranium tailings reinforced by microorganisms increased by 37.3% and 64.8% compared to those reinforced by common microorganisms and undisturbed uranium tailings, respectively. The internal friction angle is also improved, significantly enhancing the uniformity of reinforcement and a denser and stronger microscopic structure. This research demonstrates that MICP technology enhances the solidification effects and uniformity of uranium tailings, providing a novel approach to maintaining the safety and stability of uranium tailings dams

        Construction of rough and porous surface of hydrophobic PTFE powderembedded PVDF hollow fiber composite membrane for accelerated water mass transfer of membrane distillation

        The construction of rough and porous hydrophobic membrane surface is expected to overcome the obstaclesincluding low permeate water flux and membrane pore wetting which greatly restrict the developmentof membrane distillation (MD) technology. In this study, a rough and porouspolytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder-embedded polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hydrophobic coatinglayer was compounded on the outer surface of PVDF hollow fiber support membrane by the dilute solutioncoating-phase inversion method. PVDF hollow fiber support membrane was fabricated by the dry-jetwet-spinning technique. PTFE powder was directly incorporated in PVDF dilute coating solution andembedded in the porous PVDF coating layer after the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS). Thevariations of membrane morphology, surface chemical compositions, hydrophobicity and wetting resistancewere investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Attenuated total reflection-Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), dynamic water contact angle (WCA) and liquid entry pressure(LEP) analysis. Membrane separation performance including desalination and ionic dyes removalproperties was evaluated by VMD experiment. Compared with PVDF hollow fiber support membrane,both the surface hydrophobicity and the water permeability of the PTFE powder-embedded PVDF hollowfiber composite membrane (HFC) had obvious improvement. The surface WCA and permeate water fluxincreased from 92.6 and 11.3 kg/m2.h for PVDF support membrane to 133.6 and 26.8 kg/m2.h for thePTFE powder-embedded HFC membrane meanwhile NaCl rejection can be maintained above 99.9%(3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution at 50 C and permeate pressure at 31.3 kPa). The separation performanceof HFC membrane can remain stable without obvious pore wetting during the continuous MD operationfor 36 h. Different from the desalination, porous hollow fiber membrane would adsorb two differentcharged dyes, Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) to a certain extent, resulting in the decrease ofmembrane flux and the change of permeate water quality. Finally, the MD separation mechanism of inorganicsalt, anionic dye and cationic dye by PTFE powder-embedded HFC membrane was proposed.

        Naringenin ameliorates atopic dermatitis by inhibiting inflammation and enhancing immunity through the JAK2/STAT3 pathway

        Objective Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disease. Naringenin (Nar) possesses an anti-inflammatory property. This paper attempts to discuss the functional mechanism of Nar in AD mice through the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activation of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway. Methods Mouse models of DNFB-induced AD were established and treated with Nar, followed by intraperitoneal injection with the JAK2/STAT3 pathway activator Coumermycin A1. Dermatitis severity was scored and the thickness of right ear was measured. The pathological changes in dorsal skin tissues were observed by HE staining. The number of infiltrated mast cells and eosinophilic granulocytes was counted by TB staining. The serum IgE level and levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ, IL-12, and IL-5 in dorsal skin tissues were measured by ELISA. The levels of p-JAK2, JAK2, p-STAT3, and STAT3 were determined by Western blot. Results Nar decreased dermatitis scores and right ear thickness, alleviated skin lesions, and reduced the number of infiltrated mast cells and eosinophilic granulocytes in AD mice. The serum IgE level and levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ, IL-12, and IL-5 in dorsal skin tissues of AD mice were diminished after Nar treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Nar inhibited the activation of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. The activation of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway partially nullified the therapeutic function of Nar on AD mice. Conclusion Nar protects mice from AD by inhibiting inflammation and promoting immune responses through the inhibition of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway.

        Fingerprint Construction and Genetic Diversity Analysis of Tree Peony Collected from Hunan Province Based on SSR Markers

        To protect and identify the varieties of tree peony, DNA fingerprints were constructed and genetic diversity was analyzed with simple sequence repeat markers with tailed primer M13 (TP-M13-SSR) technology in 18 local tree peony varieties in Hunan Province of China. Twenty-four out of 131 pairs of polymorphic primers showing stable amplification and good capillary electrophoresis peaks were selected. The Shannon information indexes (I), polymorphism information contents (PICs), and differentiation rates of eight primer pairs were higher than average. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) dendrograms indicated that the genetic similarity coefficients of the 18 Hunan tree peony varieties ranged from 0.57 to 0.86, and Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Ning Xiang Hong’ (0.57) was classified as a separate group. The 18 varieties could be completely distinguished with two pairs of primers. The variety names, flower types, fingerprinting codes, and other information were included in the quick response (QR) code, which provides a basis for the molecular identification of Hunan tree peony varieties. The construction of DNA fingerprinting of tree peony varieties in Hunan is important for its protection.

        The Clinical Manifestation, Executive Dysfunction, and Caregiver Strain in Subthreshold Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

        Objective Subthreshold attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been suggested to be a “morbid condition” which also needs medical attention.Methods The present study recruited 89 children with subthreshold ADHD (sADHD), 115 children with diagnosed ADHD (cADHD), and 79 healthy controls (HC) to explore the clinical manifestation, executive functions (EFs) of sADHD, and the caregiver strain. The clinical manifestation was evaluated through clinical interviews and parent-reports. Executive functions were assessed both experimentally and ecologically. Caregiver strain was measured by a parent-reported questionnaire.Results For the clinical manifestation, both sADHD and cADHD indicated impairments when compared with HC. The comorbidities and the scaled symptoms indicated that the externalizing behaviors were relatively less serious in sADHD than cADHD, whereas the internalizing behaviors between two groups were comparable. For ecological EFs, sADHD scored between cADHD and HC in inhibition and working memory. For experimental EFs, sADHD was comparable to cADHD in inhibition, shifting, and was worse than cADHD in verbal working memory. For the caregiver strain, all scores of sADHD were between that in cADHD and that in HC.Conclusion Our present findings supported the suggestion of subthreshold ADHD as “morbid condition,” which should be treated with caution in clinical practice, especially for the internalizing behaviors and some key components of EFs.
