1996년에 창설된 타이페이 비엔날레(TB)의 기획 메커니즘은 타이완 출신 큐레이터들의 공 동 기획 체제(1996)로부터 일본 출신의 단일 큐레이터 체제(1998), 그리고 해외 큐레이터와 국 내 큐레이터가 협업하는 이원 큐레이터 체제(2000-2010)를 거쳐서 다시 단일 큐레이터 체제 (2012-2016)으로 회귀하기까지 다양한 과정을 겪었다. 특히 최근 단계에서는 서구 출신의 큐레 이터들이 주도권을 장악해 왔다. 본 논문에서는 타이페이 비엔날레의 창립 당시 목표와 후대의 전개 양상 사이의 괴리 현상을 분석한다. 연구자는 이 행사가 타이완의 복합적인 지역 담론과 쟁 점들을 제대로 반영하지 못하고 단순히 동시대 국제 비엔날레의 추세를 수용하는데 머물러 왔 으며, 그 배경에 타이페이 비엔날레의 기획 메커니즘 뒤에 작용하고 있는 ‘자기 식민지화’의 경향 이 존재한다고 주장한다. Since its inception in 1996, the Taipei Biennial has endured a series of changes in its curatorial mechanism. It started with a collective of Taiwanese curators, but this arrangement was discarded in 1998 in favor of a single Japanese curator. The regime changed again in 2000 to a two-curator mechanism in which one international curator and one Taiwanese curator would work side by side. Then the single-curator mechanism was reinstituted in 2012 and has remained effective so far. This latest regime has predominantly been filled by curators from the West. This paper will investigate how the Biennial's curators, under different curatorial mechanisms, have interpreted – or reinterpreted – the Biennial's original mission. Its goal is to build the basis of judgment as to whether the Taipei Biennial has become a mere vehicle to pursue international trends under a self-colonizing framework while failing to deliver on its original mission of establishing cultural identity.

Objectives. Laryngeal ultrasonography (LUS) has been suggested as an alternative diagnostic tool for unilateral vocal foldparalysis (UVFP). The present study applied LUS and quantitative laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) in female UVFPpatients to investigate the pathophysiologic mechanisms of UVFP. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, vocal fold (VF) length parameters included resting and phonating VF length measuredusing B-mode LUS, and color Doppler vibrating length (CDVL) measured using the color Doppler mode. Results. Forty female patients with UVFP were enrolled, among whom 11 and 29 were assigned to the thyroarytenoid (TA)muscle+cricothyroid (CT) muscle group (with CT involvement) and the TA (without CT involvement) group, respec-tively. In the TA group, the turn frequency in thyroarytenoid-lateral cricoarytenoid (TA-LCA) on the paralyzed side,as observed through LEMG, correlated with the VF length during the resting phase (R =0.368, P =0.050) and CDVLvalues (R =0.627, P =0.000) on the paralyzed side. In the TA+CT group, the turn ratio in the CT muscle correlatedwith the normalized phonatory vocal length change (nPLC; R =0.621, P =0.041) on the paralyzed side. Conclusion. CDVL and nPLC are two parameters that can be utilized to predict the turn frequencies of TA-LCA in UVFPcases without CT involvement, and the turn ratio of CT in cases of UVFP with CT involvement, respectively. The find-ings suggest that LUS, as a noninvasive tool, can serve as an alternative method for assessing the severity of laryngealnerve injury and offer valuable insights into the pathophysiology of UVFP.

Femoral nerve injuries are devastating injuries that lead to paralysis of the quadriceps muscles, weakening knee extension to prohibit ambulation. We report a devastating case of electrical injury-induced femoral neuropathy, where no apparent site of nerve disruption can be identified, thus inhibiting the traditional choices of nerve reconstruction such as nerve repair, grafting, or transfer. Concomitant spinal cord injury resulted in spastic myopathy of the antagonist muscles that further restricted knee extension. Our strategy was to perform (1) supercharge end-to-side technique (SETS) to augment the function of target muscles and (2) fractional tendon lengthening to release the spastic muscles. Dramatic postoperative improvement in passive and active range of motion highlights the effectiveness of this strategy to manage partial femoral nerve injuries.

<P>Black currants (Ribes nigrum L, RN) are known as a 'super fruit' to possess for their many potential health benefits such as the alleviation of oxidative stress-related disorders. However, little skin photoaging-related research has been done on the use of this agent. In the present study, we investigated the protective effects of RN in UVB-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs). RN treatment in UVB-irradiated skin models alleviated UVB-mediated photoaging through several mechanisms: Treatment with RN downregulated MAPK-related signaling models, such as those of activation protein 1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B). In addition, phase II gene heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) was modulated by the increase in nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in the nuclear, and finally, transforming growth factor TGF-beta was upregulated in vitro. Further study indicated that UVB-induced production of MMP-1 and IL-6 could be inhibited by PD 98059 (an inhibitor of ERK) and SP600125 (an inhibitor of JNK). Thus, RN improved the expression of type I procollagen and inhibited UVB-induced MMP-1 and IL-6 secretion through inactivating MAPK cascades. Therefore, RN is a suitable target for further investigation as an antiphotoaging agent and may have applications in the skincare industry.</P>
