Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the effects of rosemary essential oil on autonomic nervous system in healthy adults, using the power spectrum analysis(PSA) of heart rate variability(HRV). Methods : 20 healthy volunteers, 16 men and 4 women participated in two balanced, randomly distributed groups. 10 volunteers(named rosemary group) inhalated rosemary essential oil for 5 minutes while resting. The other 10 volunteers(named control group) inhalated distilled water for 5 minutes while resting. Each test took 30 minutes. The initial 10 minutes were defined as baseline period(pre-Aroma period), the following 10 minutes as the Aroma period and the last 10 minutes as the post-Aroma period. HRV was measured for 5 minutes in each period. Results : In control group, heart rate showed a significant decrease during the Aroma period(p=0.007). In rosemary group, heart rate showed a significant decrease during the post-Aroma period(p=0.047). But there were no significant difference between both groups on all components in HRV. Conclusions : The results suggest that rosemary essential oil in healthy adults is not associated with sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Further study is needed for investigating the effects of aromatherapy on autonomic nervous system.

N/A Objectives : The present study has been undertaken to investigate the effects of Chungajihwangtang on osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats. Methods : In this experiment, the rats were ovariectomized. These rats were administered water extract of Chungajihwangtang. The levels of bone mineral density, ALP, calcium, phosphorus in serum, calcium, phosphorus, ash weight of bone, body weight and uterus weight were measured. Results : The bone mineral density of spinal bone, femoral bone and fibular-tibial bone was increased in comparison with those of OVX group in Chungajihwangtang treated group, and the change of BMD of spinal bone had statistical significance. The levels of serum phosphorus showed significant increase in comparison with those of OVX group at 8 weeks in Chungajihwangtang treated group. The levels of femoral and fibula-tibial calcium and phosphorus showed significant increase in comparison with those of OVX group in Chungqiihwangtang treated group. The levels of body weight showed decrease in comparison with those of OVX group in Chungajihwangtang treated group, but this result had not statistical significance. The levels of uterus weight showed increase in comparison with those of OVX group in Chungajihwangtang treated group, but this result had not statistical significance. Conclusions : Reviewing these experimetal results, it appears that Chungajihwang- tang was effective on osteoporosis. And further study on Chungajihwang-tang should be conducted to illustrate in depth the curing osteoporosis.
