A poly(methyl red) film-modified glassy carbon electrode (PMRE) was fabricated for determination of norfloxacin (NFX). The electrochemical behavior of NFX was investigated and a well-defined oxidation peak with high sensitivity was observed at the film electrode. PMRE greatly enhanced the oxidation peak current of NFX owing to the extraordinary properties of poly(methyl red) film. Based on this, a sensitive and simple voltammetric method was developed for measurement of NFX. A sensitive linear voltammetric response for NFX was obtained in the concentration range of $1\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;-\;1\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ mol/L and the detection limit was $1\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ mol/L using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The proposed method possessed advantages such as low detection limit, fast response, low cost and simplicity. The practical application of this new analytical method was demonstrated with NFX pharmaceuticals.

Aim: To analyze the significance of different clinical factors for prognostic prediction in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. Methods: Two hundred and twenty-seven DLBCL patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were managed with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) regimen or rituximab plus the CHOP (RCHOP) regimen. Results: Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ${\beta}2$-microglobulin (${\beta}2$-M), B symptoms, Ann Arbor stage and genetic subtypes were statistically relevant in predicting the prognosis of the overall survival (OS). In the CHOP group, the OS in patients with germinal center B-cell-like (GCB)(76.2%) was significantly higher than that of the non-GCB group (51.9%, P=0.032). With RCHOP management, there was no statistical difference in OS between the GCB (88.4%) and non-GCB groups (81.9%, P=0.288). Conclusion: Elevated LDH and ${\beta}2$-M levels, positive B symptoms, Ann Arbor stage III/IV, and primary nodal lymphoma indicate an unfavorable prognosis of DLBCL patients. Patients with GCB-like DLBCL have a better prognosis than those with non-GCB when treated with the CHOP regimen. The RCHOP treatment with the addition of rituximab can improve the prognosis of patients with DLBCL.

Aim: To evaluate the association of glutathione S-transferases gene polymorphisms with the risk of gastric cancer, with reference to smoking and Helicobacter pylori infection. Methods: We conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study with 410 gastric cancer cases and 410 cancer-free controls. Polymorphisms of GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 were determined using PCR-CTPP. Results: The GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes were significantly associated with the risk of gastric cancer after adjusting for potential confounding factors (OR=1.68, 95% CI=1.32-2.23 for null GSTM1, OR=1.73; 95% CI=1.24-2.13 for null GSTT1). The combination of null GSTM1 and null GSTT1 conferred an elevated risk (OR=2.54, 95% CI=1.55-3.39). However, no association was found for GSTP1 polymorphism The smoking modified the association of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes with the risk of gastric cancer. Conclusion: GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes are associated with increased risk of gastric cancer, and smoking modifies the association.

Objective: To evaluate associations between tea consumption, alcohol drinking and physical activity and breast cancer risk among Chinese females. Methods: Three English databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect and Wiley) and three Chinese databases (CNKI, WanFang and VIP) were independently searched by 2 reviewers up to December 2012, complemented by manual searches. The quality of included studies was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale items. Random-effects models were used to estimate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Potential publication bias was estimated through Egger's and Begg's tests. Heterogeneity between studies was evaluated with $I^2$ statistics. Results: Thirty-nine studies involving 13,204 breast cancer cases and 87,248 controls were identified. Compared with non-drinkers, regular tea drinkers had decreased risk (OR=0.79, 95%CIs: 0.65-0.95; $I^2$=84.9%; N=16). An inverse association was also found between regular physical activity and breast cancer risk (OR=0.73, 95%CIs: 0.63-0.85; $I^2$=77.3%; N=15). However, there was no significant association between alcohol drinking and breast cancer risk (OR=0.85, 95%CIs: 0.72-1.02; $I^2$=63.8%; N=26). Most of the results from the subgroup analysis were consistent with the main results. Conclusion: Tea consumption and physical activity are significantly associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer in Chinese females. However, alcohol drinking may not be associated with any elevation of risk.

MgO nanosheets with N-doped carbon coating (MgO@N-C) were fabricated for the enhancedphotocatalytic degradation of dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet, and Rhodamine B) and antibiotics(ciprofloxacin and tetracycline hydrochloride) in visible light region. The effects of N-doping content, reactant concentration, pH value, and inorganic ions on the photocatalytic performance in degradation ofmethylene blue were investigated in this work. Narrow band gap energy and heterojunction interfaceendowed the extended light-harvesting capacity to visible light region and the efficient charge transfer, leading to the excellent photocatalytic activity and durability of MgO@N-C-3 with N-doping content of 1.52%.

Aberrant expression of genes in de novo lipogenesis (DNL) pathway were associated with various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of DNL genes have been reported to be associated with prognosis of some malignancies. However, the effects of SNPs in DNL genes on overall survival of HCC patients receiving transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatment are still unknown. In present study, nine SNPs in three genes (ACLY, ACACA and FASN) in DNL pathway were genotyped using the Sequenom iPLEX genotyping system in a hospital-based cohort with 419 HCC patients treated with TACE, and their associations with HCC overall survival were evaluated by Cox proportional hazard regression analysis under three genetic models (additive, dominant and recessive). Although we did not find any significant results in total analysis (all p>0.05), our stratified data showed that SNP rs9912300 in ACLY gene was significantly associated with overall survival of HCC patients with lower AFP level and SNP rs11871275 in ACACA gene was significantly associated with overall survival of HCC patients with higher AFP level. We further identified the significant interactions between AFP level and SNP rs9912300 or rs11871275 in the joint analysis. Conclusively, our data suggest that genetic variations in genes of DNL pathway may be a potential biomarker for predicting clinical outcome of HCC patients treated with TACE.

The genus Brucella is divided into six species; of these, B. melitensis and B. abortus are pathogenic to humans, and B. ovis and B. neotomae are nonpathogenic to humans. The definition of gene loss and acquisition is essential for understanding Brucella’s ecology, evolutionary history, and host relationships. A DNA microarray containing unique genes of B. melitensis Type strain 16MT and B. abortus 9-941 was constructed and used to determine the gene contents of the representative strains of Brucella. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred from sequences of housekeeping genes. Gene loss and acquisition of different Brucella species were inferred. A total of 214 genes were found to be differentially distributed, and 173 of them were clustered into 15 genomic islands (GIs). Evidence of horizontal gene transfer was observed for 10GIs. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the 19 strains formed five clades, and some of the GIs had been lost or acquired independently among the different lineages. The derivation of Brucella lineages is concomitant with the parallel loss or acquisition of GIs, indicating a complex interaction between various Brucella species and hosts.

Design and development superior electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to future construct a efficient overall water electrolyzer is imperative to relieve energy crisis. Herein, three-dimensional porous network of NiCoP nanosheets being covered by bimetallic phosphides nanoparticles with a ultra-small size of ∼ 7 nm anchored on nickel foam (NF) is synthesized via employing a low-cost hydrothermal and phosphorization reaction, which provides the numerous electrcatalytic active area and reactive sites, benefiting for HER behaviors. Additionally, a top-down structure of F-doped NiCo2Al-LDHs@ZnFeAl-LDHs (F-NC2AL@ZFAL) catalysts supported on NF is also fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal reaction, which could also provide promising OER performances. As expected, the as-prepared HER and OER catalysts manifest the lower overpotential of 58 and 177 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution. Significantly, a overall water electrolyzer assembled by employing the as-prepared HER and OER catalysts displays the various cell voltages of 1.36, 1.55, 1.66, and 1.75 V at the corresponding current densities of 10, 20, 50, and 100 mA cm−2, with the excellent durability for 22 h at 100 mA cm−2. The favorable electrocatalytic behaviors imply the great potential of as-prepared electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.
