Gastroprotective Activity of Neoglaziovia variegata (Arruda) Mez. (Bromeliaceae) in Rats and Mice

Kamila Lopes de Lira,Flávia Danniele Frota Machado,Ana Flávia Seraine Custódio Viana,Irisdalva Sousa Oliveira,Francilene Vieira da Silva,Hélio de Barros Fernandes,Jackson Roberto Guedes da Silva Almei 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.10

Neoglaziovia variegata (Arruda) Mez (Bromeliaceae) is a medicinal plant popularly known as “caroá.” The leaves are made up of highly resistant fibers, which is of great commercial value to the handicraft and textile industry. Some studies have demonstrated that ethanolic extract of N. variegata have gastroprotective properties. This study aimed to investigate the gastroprotective activity and cytoprotective mechanisms of ethyl acetate (Nv-AcOEt), hexane (Nv-Hex), and chloroform (Nv-CHCl3) fractions of N. variegata leaves. The gastroprotective activity of Nv-AcOEt, Nv-Hex, and Nv-CHCl3 was evaluated using the ethanol and ethanol/HCl-induced gastric injury model. To elucidate the gastroprotective mechanisms, the functions of prostaglandins (PGs), nitric oxide (NO), and KATP channels were evaluated. In addition, the nonprotein sulfhydryl groups and the mucus content in the gastric tissues were analyzed. All fractions of N. variegata leaves at oral doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg significantly decreased ethanol and ethanol/HCl-induced gastric lesions, leading to gastroprotection, accompanied by an increase in reduced glutathione (GSH) and gastric mucus. Gastroprotective activity of Nv-AcOEt was inhibited after pretreatment with ibuprofen and N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (L-NOARG). Gastroprotective effect of Nv-Hex and Nv-CHCl3 was also inhibited after pretreatment with L-NOARG and with glibenclamide. The results indicate that N. variegata (Arruda) Mez exhibits promising gastroprotective activity with the possible participation of NO, PGs, mucus, sulfhydryl groups, and KATP.

Acoustic Studies on Different Binary Liquid Mixtures of LIX Reagents with Different Diluents

Kamila, Susmita Korean Chemical Society 2012 대한화학회지 Vol.56 No.5

Ultrasonic velocity and density measurements have been undertaken for a number of binary liquid mixtures involving different commercial solvent extractants, LIX reagents. The binary mixtures under investigation have been classified under two categories such as polar-polar, and polar-non-polar types. Different theories and relations such as Schaaff's Collision Factor Theory (CFT), Nomoto's relation (NOM), and Van Dael & Vangeel ideal mixing relation (IMR) have been used to evaluate the velocity theoretically for all these binary systems. The relative merits of afore-mentioned theories and relations compared to experimental values of velocity have been discussed in terms of percentage variations. However, the CFT and Nomoto's relation show better agreement with the experimental findings than the ideal mixing relation for all the systems under investigation.

      • Cellular Protrusions - Lamellipodia, Filopodia, Invadopodia and Podosomes - and their Roles in Progression of Orofacial Tumours: Current Understanding

Alblazi, Kamila Mohamed Om,Siar, Chong Huat Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.6

Background: Protrusive structures formed by migrating and invading cells are termed lamellipodia, filopodia, invadopodia and podosomes. Lamellipodia and filopodia appear on the leading edges of migrating cells and function to command the direction of the migrating cells. Invadopodia and podosomes are special F-actin-rich matrix-degrading structures that arise on the ventral surface of the cell membrane. Invadopodia are found in a variety of carcinomatous cells including squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck region whereas podosomes are found in normal highly motile cells of mesenchymal and myelomonocytic lineage. Invadopodia-associated protein markers consisted of 129 proteins belonging to different functional classes including WASP, NWASP, cortactin, Src kinase, Arp 2/3 complex, MT1-MMP and F-actin. To date, our current understanding on the role(s) of these regulators of actin dynamics in tumors of the orofacial region indicates that upregulation of these proteins promotes invasion and metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinoma, is associated with poor/worst prognostic outcome in laryngeal cancers, contributes to the persistent growth and metastasis characteristics of salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma, is a significant predictor of increased cancer risk in oral mucosal premalignant lesions and enhances local invasiveness in jawbone ameloblastomas.

The Diagnostic Utility of Short-Term Video Electroencephalography at a Tertiary Care Center in North India: A Retrospective Study

        Rahul Sinha(Rahul Sinha ),Sonali Singh(Sonali Singh ),Gautam Kamila(Gautam Kamila ),Ashish Upadhyay(Ashish Upadhyay ) 대한소아신경학회 2022 대한소아신경학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: This study investigated the diagnostic utility of short-term video electroencephalography (EEG) recordings at a tertiary care center in North India. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 30 minutes of video EEG recordings done between January 2021 and January 2022 in children between 1 and 10 years of age. Demographic and clinical data were collected from the EEG register. Age, sex, the clinical diagnosis, the number of anti-seizure medicines (ASMs), the activation procedures used, and EEG abnormalities were recorded. Results: Data from 100 children (male-to-female ratio, 1.9:1) were analysed. The mean age was 5.39±2.02 years. The indications for EEG recordings were epileptic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, paroxysmal non-epileptic events, and miscellaneous in 66%, 18%, 9%, and 7% of children, respectively. EEG abnormalities were seen in 50 children (50%) and about 45% of children were on two or more ASMs. EEG abnormalities in sleep were seen in 35 of 66 (53%) children, whereas abnormalities were observed on awake recordings with activation procedures (hyperventilation and photic) in 23 of 34 (68%) children; this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.16) Conclusion: EEG abnormalities were significantly more common in children taking multiple ASMs; however, there was no statistically significant difference in the EEG yield between asleep and awake records with activation procedures. A better selection of patients for routine EEG, through an assessment of their clinical history and comorbidities, is warranted to increase its diagnostic yield.

SOME RESULTS ON THE UNIQUE RANGE SETS

        Chakraborty, Bikash,Kamila, Jayanta,Pal, Amit Kumar,Saha, Sudip Korean Mathematical Society 2021 대한수학회지 Vol.58 No.3

In this paper, we exhibit the equivalence between different notions of unique range sets, namely, unique range sets, weighted unique range sets and weak-weighted unique range sets under certain conditions. Also, we present some uniqueness theorems which show how two meromorphic functions are uniquely determined by their two finite shared sets. Moreover, in the last section, we make some observations that help us to construct other new classes of unique range sets.

Microcrystalline Cellulose Management in the Production of Poly(ether-urethane)s- Structure, Morphology, and Thermal Characteristic

        Paulina Kasprzyk,Kamila Błażek,Janusz Datta 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.4

In response to the demand of polymer industry for reducing the use of synthetic chemicals, eco-friendly materialsare investigated. In the presented study, bio-based poly(ether-urethane)s were prepared by using microcrystalline cellulose(MCC) and polyether polyol and 1,3-propanediol derived from corn sugar. A step towards sustainability was taken byincorporating bio-based compounds and cellulose, consequently, bio-waste are utilized in a smart way. The new materialswere synthesized via prepolymer method, while the cellulose fibers were added after the reaction. Structural studies of biocompositeswere realized by FTIR technique. The number of free and hydrogen-bonded carbonyl groups was determinedbased on the deconvolution of C=O band. Crystallinity was assessed on the basis of X-ray diffraction analysis. The influenceof the MCC content on the thermo-mechanical, thermal and selected mechanical properties has been demonstrated. Resultsobtained by SEM method showed that the higher degree of reinforcement led to the formation of aggregates reflecting theirpoor dispersion in the polymer matrix. It may probably result from the relatively weaker interaction between MCC and PUmatrix. On the other hand, it was found that the incorporation of fibers improved the thermo-mechanical and thermalproperties of the prepared materials. This work provides an effective way of using bio-renewable chemicals in thepolyurethane industry without using additional processing apparatus and chemical processes. The used method makes itpossible to obtain materials with high bio-content and satisfactory thermal characteristic.
