Orientals with prominent cheek bones are aesthetically unpleased. So we have performed reduction malarplasty which consists of medial and lateral malar osteotomies, mobilization of malar complex to more attractive point, and wire fixation through coronal incision on 288 patients from March, 1988 to February, 1997. Results have shown symmetry, natural contour, good patient acceptance, and no significant complication. The concept of 'mobilization of malar eminence to more attractive point' is important because the goal of surgery is not to achieve merely 'flat' malar complex. At the same time various procedures have been also performed to improve facial aesthetics. The simultaneous subperiosteal face life was advantageous especially to aged patients and to those with severe anterior projection of malar eminences. Reduction malarplasty combined with reduction angleplasty and face life is one of the useful way to restore the youthful appearance.

The oblique facial clefts, which include Tessier No. 3, 4, and 5 clefts, are a catastrophic facial anomaly. The direction they take may be (oro)naso-ocular or oro-ocular. Although oblique facial clefts had beep reported before, in 1823 Laroche was the first to differentiate between ordinary cleft lip or harelip and clefts of the cheek. All these clefts are rare, their incidence ranging from 0.75 to 5.4 per 1,000 common clefts and only one case was reported in the Korean literature. In general multiple operations are required for the reconstruction of these anomalies and the results in most cases are far from ideal. We have experienced 5 cases of oblique facial cleft with acceptable results.

Insulin has a variety of activities like as glucose uptake, inhibition of lipolysis, glycogen biosynthesis in a number of cells and tissues. Recently insulin has known to exert an antiapoptotic activity in different cell systems. However, it is not clear by which insulin can protect apoptosis cells from apoptosis. Thus, CHO cells expressing the human insulin receptors (CHO-IR) were used to evaluate the importances of different signaling steps activated by insulin in this process. The Ras/Raf-1/MEK/ERK cascade and the serine/threonine protein kinase Akt are two survival pathways that may be activated in response to insulin. We tested the hypothesis that inhibition of farnesylated Ras was casually related to manumycin-induced apoptosis and showed that the response to manumycin was found to be independent of K-Ras function. Moreover, blocking Ras/Raf-1/MEK/ERK cascade by the expression of a transdominant inhibitory mSOSI mutant in CHO-IR cells kept cells to sensitive to the antiapoptotic action of insulin. Insulin-dependent activation of Akt was blocked by 4th treatment with manumycin. This study suggest that the deplection of short-lived farnesylated proteins by manumycin suppresses the antiapoptotic action of insulin at least in part by disrupting Aktactivation but not of the K-Ras/Raf-1/MEK/ERK-dependent cascade.
노인 인구에서 신경인지기능저하와 혈청 지질농도와의 상관성

Objectives : In this study, the authors evaluated the correlation between eurocognitive impairments and serum lipids levels among Korean elderly over the age of 65. Methods : A total of 609 elderly individuals participated in this study. Screening for cognitive impairments were carried out using the Mini-Mental Status Examination-Korean version (MMSE-KC). There were 197 subjects above 1.5SD Of MMSE- KC and they were evaluated using the Korean versions of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) (CERAD-KC) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-K). Results : There was a correlation between old age/low levels of education and AD (p<0.05, P<0.01). There was an inverse correlation between the serum level of total cholesterol and the word list recognition test scores. The serum levels of LDL cholesterol were inversely correlated with the scores on the constructional praxis test, word list recall test and word list recognition test. Inverse correlations between the serum level of triglyceride and scores on the word list recall test and word list recognition test were also observed. Conclusion : There were inverse correlations between the serum levels of lipids and language/memory function in subjects with AD.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Metal additive manufacturing (AM) technology as the emerging future manufacturing technology can be applied to the hydrogen service including hydrogen energy utilized industry. Direct metal tooling (DMT), one of the 3-D printing technologies, was used to manufacture an austenitic stainless steel part, and its mechanical properties and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) behavior were studied using the small specimen test technique under 10-MPa pressurized hydrogen gas. This part showed high HE resistance with minimal strain-induced transformation of austenite to martensite. This result indicates that parts produced using DMT are suitable for use in facilities for hydrogen service and hydrogen infrastructure.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Friction Stir Spot Welded Galvanized Steel

<P>Joints of galvanized steel were obtained by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) with lap configuration using CPS design tool. No mechanically mixed layer was formed between the top and bottom plates at the weld nugget due to the limited tool penetration and the lower pin height of the welding tool than the steel plate thickness. A deformed region, in which ZnO particles were detected, was observed in the joint. The formation of this deformed region was attributed to the explosion of the Zn coating layer due to friction heating and tool compression. With increasing tool penetration depth, the tensile shear strength of the joint increased to a maximum value of 3.07 kN at a tool penetration depth of 0.52 mm.</P>

<P>Osterix (Osx) is essential for osteoblast differentiation and bone formation, because mice lacking Osx die within 1 h of birth with a complete absence of intramembranous and endochondral bone formation. Perinatal lethality caused by the disruption of the Osx gene prevents studies of the role of Osx in bones that are growing or already formed. Here, the function of Osx was examined in adult bones using the time- and site-specific Cre/loxP system. Osx was inactivated in all osteoblasts by Col1a1-Cre with the activity of Cre recombinase under the control of the 2.3-kb collagen promoter. Even though no bone defects were observed in newborn mice, Osx inactivation with 2.3-kb Col1a1-Cre exhibited osteopenia phenotypes in growing mice. BMD and bone-forming rate were decreased in lumbar vertebra, and the cortical bone of the long bones was thinner and more porous with reduced bone length. The trabecular bones were increased, but they were immature or premature. The expression of early marker genes for osteoblast differentiation such as Runx2, osteopontin, and alkaline phosphatase was markedly increased, but the late marker gene, osteocalcin, was decreased. However, no functional defects were found in osteoclasts. In summary, Osx inactivation in growing bones delayed osteoblast maturation, causing an accumulation of immature osteoblasts and reducing osteoblast function for bone formation, without apparent defects in bone resorption. These findings suggest a significant role of Osx in positively regulating osteoblast differentiation and bone formation in adult bone.</P>
