This research is a foundational study for developing a cognitive conflict learning strategy model considering characteristics of physics concepts and students` affective variables. The purpose of this study is to investigate the science teachers` understanding of the cognitive conflict learning strategy and the practice of the learning strategy in science classes. The total of 40 science teachers who had taken the lectures of `science pedagogy` and `science learning and instruction: theory into practice` in graduate school were selected for this study. The participants were asked to answer a questionnaire and participated interviews. Data have been collected by the questionnaire and the interviews. The conclusion can be summarized as follows. First, Most science teachers recognized that the cognitive conflict learning strategy is important and has a good effect on students` conceptual changes when learning science. However, there are many kinds of difficulties in their applying it to classroom context. Among them, to solve the teacher`s factor and the lack of teaching/learning materials, we need to develop not only the science pedagogical curriculum composed of practice and application related to concrete conceptual change learning strategy, but the systems to spread the developed materials. Second, qualitative approach seemed to be necessary to get further developing the cognitive conflict learning strategy model based the characteristics of physics concepts and student`s affective variables.
Is Whole Exome Sequencing Clinically Practical in the Management of Pediatric Crohn’s Disease?

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to identify the profile of rare variants associated with Crohn’s disease (CD) using whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis of Korean children with CD and to evaluate whether genetic profiles could provide information during medical decision making. Methods: DNA samples from 18 control individuals and 22 patients with infantile, very-early and early onset CD of severe phenotype were used for WES. Genes were filtered using panels of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-associated genes and genes of primary immunodeficiency (PID) and monogenic IBD. Results: Eighty-one IBD-associated variants and 35 variants in PID genes were revealed by WES. The most frequently occurring variants were carried by nine (41%) and four (18.2%) CD probands and were ATG16L2 (rs11235604) and IL17REL (rs142430606), respectively. Twenty-four IBD-associated variants and 10 PID variants were predicted to be deleterious and were identified in the heterozygous state. However, their functions were unknown with the exception of a novel p.Q111X variant in XIAP (X chromosome)of a male proband. Conclusions: The presence of many rare variants of unknown significance limits the clinical applicability of WES for individual CD patients. However, WES in children may be beneficial for distinguishing CD secondary to PID. (Gut Liver 2015,9:767-775)

Canine brucellosis produce abortions and infertility in dogs and currently is diagnosed by serological methods such as rapid slide agglutination test with 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME RSAT) and immunochromatographic assay (ICA). Bacterial isolation is considered gold standard for Brucella diagnosis and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an alternative method to bacterial isolation. A total of 36 whole blood samples were collected from dogs reared in area of Chuncheon and were subjected to serology (2-ME RSAT and ICA for B. canis, Rose Bengal test and C-ELISA for B. abortus), blood culture and 3 types of PCRs (BSCP31, 16s rRNA, and OMP-2). All blood samples were negative by serology and blood cultures. The BCSP31 and the OMP-2 PCR detected 5 samples were positive whereas the 16S rRNA PCR detected all samples were negative as serological methods and blood culture did. From the results observed in the present study, we conclude that 16S rRNA PCR could be used for direct PCR for canine blood samples.

<P>The frequency of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) mutations varies between racial and ethnic groups, and there are also conflicting data regarding <I>MTHFR</I> gene mutations in Asian patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). The aim of this study was to examine the association between common <I>MTHFR</I> gene mutations (677C>T and 1298A>C) and risk of VTE in Koreans. This study was a retrospective case–control study. We enrolled 203 patients with VTE and 403 controls. For the 677C>T polymorphism, there was no difference in the frequency of the CT genotype and TT genotype between the patients with VTE and the controls. However, in the recessive analysis (CC + CT vs TT), the frequency of the TT genotype was significantly higher in VTE than in controls (odds ratio = 1.700; 95% confidence interval = 1.108-2.607, <I>P</I> = .015). In conclusion, the TT genotype of <I>MTHFR</I> 677C>T increases the risk of VTE in Koreans. This finding was supported by meta-analysis of previous Asian studies.</P>
