        Roundtable on Peter J. Katzenstein's Contributions to the Study of East Asian Regionalism

        Over the past decade, Peter J. Katzenstein has made enormous contributions to our theoretical and empirical understanding of Asian economic and security regionalism, which has been manifested by the proliferation of intra- and extra-regional free trade agreements, regional financial institutions, and cooperative regional security dialogues. Katzensteins scholarly works on Asian regionalism and the changing role of Japan have set the pace for research in the field. In this article, a group of distinguished scholars in the field of Asian regionalismVinod K. Aggarwal, Min Gyo Koo, Amitave Acharya, Richard Higgott, and John Ravenhillcritically evaluate Katzensteins approach to the links among Japan, Asian regionalism, and global politics. In response, Katzenstein argues that Asian (and European) regionalism is linked to the American imperium and to core regional states and that regionalism is best studied with an eclectic approach. For him, regionalism is a force that defines security, economic, and cultural dimensions of world politics, thus bringing about a modicum of order therein.

      • Plasma zinc's alter ego is a low-molecular-weight humoral factor

        <P>Mild dietary zinc deprivation in humans and rodents has little effect on blood plasma zinc levels, and yet cellular consequences of zinc depletion can be detected in vascular and other tissues. We proposed that a zinc-regulated humoral factor might mediate the effects of zinc deprivation. Using a novel approach, primary rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were treated with plasma from zinc-deficient (<1 mg Zn/kg) or zinc-adequate (35 mg Zn/kg, pair-fed) adult male rats, and zinc levels were manipulated to distinguish direct and indirect effects of plasma zinc. Gene expression changes were analyzed by microarray and qPCR, and incubation of VSMCs with blood plasma from zinc-deficient rats strongly changed the expression of >2500 genes, compared to incubation of cells with zinc-adequate rat plasma. We demonstrated that this effect was caused by a low-molecular-weight (∼2-kDa) zinc-regulated humoral factor but that changes in gene expression were mostly reversed by adding zinc back to zinc-deficient plasma. Strongly regulated genes were overrepresented in pathways associated with immune function and development. We conclude that zinc deficiency induces the production of a low-molecular-weight humoral factor whose influence on VSMC gene expression is blocked by plasma zinc.         Evaluation of endoscopically obtained duodenal biopsy samples from cats and dogs in an adapter-modified Ussing chamber

        This study was conducted to evaluate an adapter-modifiedUssing chamber for assessment of transport physiology inendoscopically obtained duodenal biopsies from healthy catsand dogs, as well as dogs with chronic enteropathies. 17duodenal biopsies from five cats and 51 duodenal biopsiesfrom 13 dogs were obtained. Samples were transferred intoan adapter-modified Ussing chamber and sequentiallyexposed to various absorbagogues and secretagogues. Overall, 78.6% of duodenal samples obtained from catsresponded to at least one compound. In duodenal biopsiesobtained from dogs, the rate of overall response ranged from87.5% (healthy individuals; n = 8), to 63.6% (animalsexhibiting clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease andhistopathological unremarkable duodenum; n = 15), and32.1% (animals exhibiting clinical signs of gastrointestinaldiseases and moderate to severe histopathological lesions; n =28). Detailed information regarding the magnitude andduration of the response are provided. The adapter-modifiedUssing chamber enables investigation of the absorptive andsecretory capacity of endoscopically obtained duodenalbiopsies from cats and dogs and has the potential to become avaluable research tool. The response of samples was correlated with histopathological findings.

        The unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina Teod. as a model for abiotic stress tolerance: genetic advances and future perspectives

        The physiology of the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina in response to abiotic stress has been studied for several decades. Early D. salina research focused on its remarkable salinity tolerance and ability, upon exposure to various abiotic stresses, to accumulate high concentrations of β-carotene and other carotenoid pigments valued highly as nutraceuticals. The simple life cycle and growth requirements of D. salina make this organism one of the large-scale commercially exploited microalgae for natural carotenoids. Recent advances in genomics and proteomics now allow investigation of abiotic stress responses at the molecular level. Detailed knowledge of isoprenoid biosynthesis mechanisms and the development of molecular tools and techniques for D. salina will allow the improvement of physiological characteristics of algal strains and the use of transgenic algae in bioreactors. Here we review D. salina isoprenoid and carotenoid biosynthesis regulation, and also the biotechnological and genetic transformation procedures developed for this alga that set the stage for its future use as a production system.

        송과체부위종양 및 중추신경계 배아세포종양의 치료 : 치료방법의 변천에 따른 치료성적 Evolution of Treatment Policy and Result

        A retrospective analysis has been made of 40 patients with pineal region tumors and CNS germ cell tumors who were treated at Yonsei University Hospital, Department of Radiation Oncology between 1971 and 1985. A tissue diagnosis was obtained before radiotherapy in 19 patients and 21 patients were irradiated without histological diagnosis. Among 19 biospyproven cases, 14 were germinomas, 2 were teratomas, and the others were two pineocytomas and one pineoblastoma. In the earlier period, every attempt was made to obtain a tissue pathology by either stereotaxic biopsy or open craniotomy before irradiation. However, in recent years, wityh the advent of CT scan, a trial radiotherapy with a modest dose of 20 ㏉m 2 weeks was attempted in cases of highly suspected germinomas by CT scan findings. Further management after trial radiation depended on the radiation response shown on the follow up CT scan and tumor marker study. Radiation fields varied from a small local field to whole brain or entire neuroaxis irradiation. Most patients received 40-50 ㏉ to the primary tumor site and 20-30 ㏉ to the neuroaxis. Twenty-nine of the total 40 patients are alive without of disease 22-144 months after treatment and the overall 5-year recurrence-free survival rate was 74.4%, Univariate analysis of prognostic factors at presentation showed that tumor type was highly correlated with outcome. Two of fourteen biopsy-proven germinomas and none of nine presumed germinomas by trial radiation recurred. On the other hand, five of six patients who showed poor response to trial radiation died of uncontrolled disease and only one patient with elevated AFP in serum and CSF was salvaged by chemotherapy. On the basis of the results of this study, application of trial radiation therapy without tissue biopsy is well justified as a treatment modality in a suspected germinoma by CT scan finding. Aggressive combined modality approaches with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy need to be investigated to improve results in radioresistant tumors.

        다발성 원격전이와 SIADH를 동반한 원발성 충수돌기 악성유암종 (Carcinoid Tumor) 1예

        Carcinoid tumors are the most trequently occurring neoplasms of the appendix and small bowel. Most carcinoid tumors of the appendix are incidentally discovered during other surgical procedures. Its natural course is usually benign and the size of the tumor is closely related with the liability of regional or distant metastasis, so this affects the mode of therapy. Lesions less than 2㎝ in greatest dimension are never shown to have metastatic lesions and those larger than 2㎝ are likely to metastasize to regional lymph nodes and occasionally to distant organs such as liver, lung and bones. We experienced a malignant carcinoid tumor of the appendix with metastasis to regional lymph nodes, lung, ribs and thoracic vertebrae, cervical lymphnodes, and the right adrenal gland without liver metastasis. The patient had no signs of carcinoid syndrome but showed hyponatremia which was corrected by fluid restriction, suggesting SIADH. The patient was treated with a combination regimen of 5-fluorouracil and doxorubicin after surgical removal of the appendiceal mass, and a palliative radiotherapy for the osteolytic lesion of the right 12th rib. A review of our experience suggests a more extensive program in disseminated malignant carcinoid tumors is required.

        Linear Accelerator를 이용한 Stereotactic Radiosurgery

        A Modified irradiation technique utilizing a linear accelerator for radiation surgery within the brain was performed in 4 patients. Three of them had brain tumors and one small arteriovenous malformation in midbrain. A Hitchcock stereotactic apparatus and a 10 MeV linear accelerator have been adapted and special computer programs for dosimetry were obtained and studied experimentally with a phantom model. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a valuable tool in the treatment of inoperable, deep seated intracranial lesions, the major advantage being high efficacy and smoothness of the procedure, as well as short hospitalization times.

      • RESOLVED DEPLETION ZONES AND SPATIAL DIFFERENTIATION OF N<sub>2</sub>H<sup>+</sup>AND N<sub>2</sub>D<sup>+</sup>

        <P>We present a study on the spatial distribution of N2D+ and N2H+ in 13 protostellar systems. Eight of thirteen objects observed with the IRAM 30 m telescope show relative offsets between the peak N2D+ (J = 2 -> 1) and N2H+ (J = 1 -> 0) emission. We highlight the case of L1157 using interferometric observations from the Submillimeter Array and Plateau de Bure Interferometer of the N2D+ (J = 3 -> 2) and N2H+ (J = 1 -> 0) transitions, respectively. Depletion of N2D+ in L1157 is clearly observed inside a radius of similar to 2000 AU (7 '') and the N2H+ emission is resolved into two peaks at radii of similar to 1000 AU (3 ''.5), inside the depletion region of N2D+. Chemical models predict a depletion zone in N2D+ and N2H+ due to destruction of H2D+ at T similar to 20 K and the evaporation of CO off dust grains at the same temperature. However, the abundance offsets of 1000 AU between the two species are not reproduced by chemical models, including a model that follows the infall of the protostellar envelope. The average abundance ratios of N2D+ to N2H+ have been shown to decrease as protostars evolve by Emprechtinger et al., but this is the first time depletion zones of N2D+ have been spatially resolved. We suggest that the difference in depletion zone radii for N2H+ and N2D+ is caused by either the CO evaporation temperature being above 20 K or an H-2 ortho-to-para ratio gradient in the inner envelope.</P>

        Structural dependencies of protein backbone<sup>2</sup><i>J</i><sub>NC′</sub>couplings

        <P>Protein folding can introduce strain in peptide covalent geometry, including deviations from planarity that are difficult to detect, especially for a protein in solution. We have found dependencies in protein backbone (2)J(NC') couplings on the planarity and the relative orientation of the sequential peptide planes. These dependences were observed in experimental (2)J(NC') couplings from seven proteins, and also were supported by DFT calculations for a model tripeptide. Findings indicate that elevated (2)J(NC') couplings may serve as reporters of structural strain in the protein backbone imposed by protein folds. Such information, supplemented with the H-bond strengths derived from (h3)J(NC') couplings, provides useful insight into the overall energy profile of the protein backbone in solution.</P>
