This is a comparative study on objectives of higher education. In this article, an attempt has been made to clarify the aims and objectives of Kon-Kuk University in the light of prevailing ideas and principles of higher institutions of the Western world. First, present aims and objectives of Kon-Kuk University are described as they were presented by the deans of each college and graduate school. Second, current universal aims and goals of higher educational institutions are examined in order to bring light to the nature of higher learning. Three writings on the subject introduced are : (1) Professor Robert Ulich's "On the Rise and Decline of Higher Education" (2) Professor Earl f. McGrath's "The Goals of Higher Education" (3) Chairman Ordway Tead's "The Role of Objectives in Higher Education" Finally, through the comparative method, the author made some concluding remarks in the form of recommendations to the authorities of Kon-Kuk University. They are : (1) The statement of the aims and objectives should be more realistic and concrete because the existing aims and purposes are rather abstract and ambiguous. (2) The objectives of general education program should be made clearer and more definite. (3) The university precepts of Kon-Kuk University-namely, Sung, (Sincerity) Shin, (Trust) and Eui, (Righteousness) should be more clearly defined and explained concretely. (4) Each college should establish the committee of instruction to study and promote the objectives of educational activities. (5) The university will profit a great deal if it constantly reflects on historical lessons with regards to the spirit of higher learing of the world.
경구면역을 통한 항원 특이적 IgA 항체 합성에 있어 Cholera Toxin과 Alginate-Microsphere의 효과

Secretory (S-IgA) isotype antibody (Ab) is known to play an essential role in the primary defense against various infectious agents in mucosal tissue. However, it has been mostly unsuccessful in the induction of antigen (Ag)-specific IgA Ab response in this site by peroral vaccination. In the present study, we investigated the effect of cholera toxin (CI) as a mucosal adjuvant and alginates-microspheres as a carrier on BSA-specific IgA Ab response in gut-associated lymphoid tissue`(GALT). Peroral immunization of BSA plus CT conferred a great BSA-specific IgA response but IgG response on intestinal fluid (IF). In contrast, intraperitoneal immunization of BSA with Freund's adjuvant readily induced BSA-specific IgG response but IgA response in IF. Further, number of CT specific IgA-secreting cells was substantially increased in mesenteric lymph node when CT-encapsulated-VI alginates-microspheres was administered perorally. Taken together, these results indicate that peroral immunization of soluble antigen in combination of CT or microspheres significantly enhances antigen-specific IgA response in GALT.

Because paper industry spends lots amount of water, the reuse from recycling of water is very important in economically as well as environmental aspects. Save all system, like CDS and settling tank, plays an important role in the recycling of water. In this study, the sedimentation efficiency of white water was tested under the different amount of alum addition in order to find the optimum conditions of waste water treatment. At the conditions of alum 100 ppm and A-polymer 1 ppm, the coagulation efficiency was highest and SS density was obtained below 50 ppm from 3 kinds of paper production lines.

Labor saving, simple and fast instration of hawse band is necessary for house management. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the cord materials(rice transplsnting string, pack sack band and drip irrigation nozzle and house band) and installation methods(string exchange, both side throwing, ball throwing and and both side throwing) of house band. Both side throwing + Ball throwing) of house band. Both side throwing of drip irrigation nozzle appeared to be the fatest method for house band installation. Attachment of tennis ball of 160∼ 180g at the both end of drip irrigation nozzle enabled fast band installation in both side throwing and only one man is able to install the house band

Objective: We aimed to develop a deep neural network for segmenting lung parenchyma with extensive pathological conditions on non-contrast chest computed tomography (CT) images. Materials and Methods: Thin-section non-contrast chest CT images from 203 patients (115 males, 88 females; age range, 31–89 years) between January 2017 and May 2017 were included in the study, of which 150 cases had extensive lung parenchymal disease involving more than 40% of the parenchymal area. Parenchymal diseases included interstitial lung disease (ILD), emphysema, nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease, tuberculous destroyed lung, pneumonia, lung cancer, and other diseases. Five experienced radiologists manually drew the margin of the lungs, slice by slice, on CT images. The dataset used to develop the network consisted of 157 cases for training, 20 cases for development, and 26 cases for internal validation. Two-dimensional (2D) U-Net and three-dimensional (3D) U-Net models were used for the task. The network was trained to segment the lung parenchyma as a whole and segment the right and left lung separately. The University Hospitals of Geneva ILD dataset, which contained high-resolution CT images of ILD, was used for external validation. Results: The Dice similarity coefficients for internal validation were 99.6 ± 0.3% (2D U-Net whole lung model), 99.5 ± 0.3% (2D U-Net separate lung model), 99.4 ± 0.5% (3D U-Net whole lung model), and 99.4 ± 0.5% (3D U-Net separate lung model). The Dice similarity coefficients for the external validation dataset were 98.4 ± 1.0% (2D U-Net whole lung model) and 98.4 ± 1.0% (2D U-Net separate lung model). In 31 cases, where the extent of ILD was larger than 75% of the lung parenchymal area, the Dice similarity coefficients were 97.9 ± 1.3% (2D U-Net whole lung model) and 98.0 ± 1.2% (2D U-Net separate lung model). Conclusion: The deep neural network achieved excellent performance in automatically delineating the boundaries of lung parenchyma with extensive pathological conditions on non-contrast chest CT images.
골절정복겸자가 하악골 골절정복에 미치는 효과에 관한 광탄성 연구

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress patterns within fractured mandibles generated by reduction forceps and to determine the optimal position of the reduction forcep. Twenty-seven mandibular models were fabricated using a photoelastic resin. Each of the three sets of mandible models prepared was osteotomized according to one of three different fracture types(symphysis, parasymphysis and body fractures). After reducing the cut segments, a reduction forcep was placed into different engagement holes to compress the segments. Photoelastic stress analysis was used to visualize the stress patterns within the fractured mandiblular models generated by the reduction forcep. In the case of symphysis or parasymphysis fractures, an optimum distribution of stress over the fracture site was achieved when placing the reduction forcep more than 12.5㎜ on either side of the fracture line between the midway level bisecting the mandible and 5㎜ below the level. In the case of body fractures, optimum stress distribution was achieved when the reduction forcep was placed more than 15㎜ from the fracture line on the midway level. In conclusion, a correct use of reduction forceps helps to provide a precise threedimensional reduction for mandibular fractures.

Purpose: To determine the efficacy of immediate pars plana vitrectomy as the primary treatment for acute endophthalmitis in patients with a visual acuity (VA) of hand motion (HM) or better. Methods: A total of 149 patients who were referred to a single center for acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery over the 13-year study period were retrospectively analyzed. Only patients presenting with a VA of at least HM were included. Patients were initially treated with either primary vitrectomy or intravitreal antibiotic injection alone, and their visual outcomes and reintervention rates after initial treatment were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in the proportion of good (final VA ≥20 / 40) and poor (VA ≤ counting finger) visual outcomes between the groups. However, subgroup analysis of patients with a VA of HM (92 eyes) showed that the incidence of reintervention (14 of 72 eyes [19.4%] vs. 9 of 20 eyes [45.0%]) and poor visual outcomes (10 of 72 eyes [13.9%] vs. 8 of 20 eyes [40.0%]) were lower after prompt vitrectomy than after intravitreal antibiotic injection alone (p = 0.019 and p = 0.022, respectively). For those with a VA of at least counting finger, no significant difference was observed between the groups. Conclusions: For patients with endophthalmitis presenting with a VA of HM, performing a prompt vitrectomy reduced the incidence of reintervention and poor visual outcomes than the administration of intravitreal antibiotics alone. Our results suggest that primary vitrectomy for patients with endophthalmitis presenting with a VA of HM could be more beneficial than intravitreal antibiotic injection alone.
