The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of musical representation activities utilizing concrete materials on young children’s musical and representational ability. This study recruited fifty-one children of five-year-old classrooms from a kindergarten located in Daegu metropolitan city. They were subdivided into an experimental(n = 26) and a control group(n = 25). The experimental group participated in the musical representation activities using concrete materials for a total of twenty sessions over ten weeks, two times per week, while the control group experienced musical activities based on the Nuri curriculum. The tools used in this study were the Primary Measures of Music Audiation (PMMA) by Gordon(1986) in order to measure their musical abilities and the Representational Evaluation Scale for Clay Activities by Shin and Kwon(2011) in order to measure their representational abilities. The collected data were analyzed using ANCOVA to explore the differences of musical and representational ability between the two groups. The results of this study were as follows: First, the children's musical ability and its sub-categories, which were tonal and rhythm capabilities in the experimental group that participated in the activities using concrete materials significantly differed from those of the control group. Second, the children’s representational ability and its sub-categories, which were elaboration of representation, creativity of representation, connectedness of representation of language in the experimental group were significantly different from those of the control group. The findings suggest that musical representational activities based on concrete materials are productive in achievement of young children’s musical and representational abilities.

Exosomal miR-181b-5p Downregulation in Ascites Serves as a Potential Diagnostic Biomarker for Gastric Cancer-associated Malignant Ascites

        Yun, Jieun,Han, Sang-Bae,Kim, Hong Jun,Go, Se-il,Lee, Won Sup,Bae, Woo Kyun,Cho, Sang-Hee,Song, Eun-Kee,Lee, Ok-Jun,Kim, Hee Kyung,Yang, Yaewon,Kwon, Jihyun,Chae, Hee Bok,Lee, Ki Hyeong,Han, Hye Sook The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2019 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.19 No.3

Purpose: Peritoneal carcinomatosis in gastric cancer (GC) patients results in extremely poor prognosis. Malignant ascites samples are the most appropriate biological material to use to evaluate biomarkers for peritoneal carcinomatosis. This study identified exosomal MicroRNAs (miRNAs) differently expressed between benign liver cirrhosis-associated ascites (LC-ascites) and malignant gastric cancer-associated ascites (GC-ascites), and validated their role as diagnostic biomarkers for GC-ascites. Materials and Methods: Total RNA was extracted from exosomes isolated from 165 ascites samples (73 LC-ascites and 92 GC-ascites). Initially, microarrays were used to screen the expression levels of 2,006 miRNAs in the discovery cohort (n=22). Subsequently, quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses were performed to validate the expression levels of selected exosomal miRNAs in the training (n=70) and validation (n=73) cohorts. Furthermore, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were determined in ascites samples. Results: The miR-574-3p, miR-181b-5p, miR-4481, and miR-181d were significantly downregulated in the GC-ascites samples compared to the LC-ascites samples, and miR-181b-5p showed the best diagnostic performance for GC-ascites (area under the curve [AUC]=0.798 and 0.846 for the training and validation cohorts, respectively). The diagnostic performance of CEA for GC-ascites was improved by the combined analysis of miR-181b-5p and CEA (AUC=0.981 and 0.946 for the training and validation cohorts, respectively). Conclusions: We identified exosomal miRNAs capable of distinguishing between non-malignant and GC-ascites, showing that the combined use of miR-181b-5p and CEA could improve diagnosis.

      • Extraction of Separated Source and Drain Resistances in Amorphous Indium–Gallium–Zinc Oxide TFTs Through <tex> $C$</tex>– <tex> $V$</tex> Characterization

        Hagyoul Bae,Sungchul Kim,Minkyung Bae,Ja Sun Shin,Dongsik Kong,Hyunkwang Jung,Jaeman Jang,Jieun Lee,Dae Hwan Kim,Dong Myong Kim IEEE 2011 IEEE electron device letters Vol.32 No.6

<P>Considering asymmetry caused by layout, process, and device degradation, separate extraction of the source and drain resistances, i.e., <I>RS</I> and <I>RD</I>, respectively, from the total resistance <I>R</I>TOT is very important in the design, modeling, and characterization of amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). Due to the insulated gate structure, however, separate extraction is difficult through direct-current <I>I</I>-<I>V</I> characterization. In this letter, we propose a simple and useful technique for separate extraction of <I>RS</I> from <I>RD</I> in a-IGZO TFTs through a two-terminal parallel-mode <I>C</I> -<I>V</I> technique. We experimentally verified the validity of the proposed technique by comparing the result with the source-to-drain resistance from the <I>I</I>-<I>V</I> characteristics.</P>

The amount of TPH contaminated soil treated at off-site remediation facilities is ever increasing. For the recycle of the treated-soil on farmlands, it is necessary to restore biological and physico-chemical soil characteristics and to remove residual TPH in the soil by an economic polishing treatment method such as phytoremediation. In this study, a series of experiments was performed to select suitable plant species and to devise a proper planting method for the phyto-restoration of TPH-treated soil. Rye (Secale cereale) was selected as test species through a germination test, among 5 other plants. Five 7-day-old rye seedlings were planted in a plastic pot, 20 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter. The pot was filled with TPH-treated soil (residual TPH of 1,118 mg/kg) up to 15 cm, and upper 5 cm was filled with horticulture soil to prevent TPH toxic effects and to act as root growth zone. The planted pot was cultivated in a greenhouse for 38 days along with the control that rye planted in a normal soil and the blank with no plants. After 38 days, the above-ground biomass of rye in the TPH-treated soil was 30.6% less than that in the control, however, the photosynthetic activity of the leaf remained equal on both treatments. Soil DHA (dehydrogenase activity) increased 186 times in the rye treatment compared to 10.8 times in the blank. The gross TPH removal (%) in the planted soil and the blank soil was 34.5% and 18.4%, respectively, resulting in 16.1% increase of net TPH removal. Promotion of microbial activity by root exudate, increase in soil permeability and air ventilation as well as direct uptake and degradation by planted rye may have contributed to the higher TPH removal rate. Therefore, planting rye on the TPH-treated soil with the root growth zone method showed both the potential of restoring biological soil properties and the possibility of residual TPH removal that may allow the recycle of the treated soil to farmlands.

Protective effect of Korean Red Ginseng extract against Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric inflammation in Mongolian gerbils

        Bae, Minkyung,Jang, Sungil,Lim, Joo Weon,Kang, Jieun,Bak, Eun Jung,Cha, Jeong-Heon,Kim, Hyeyoung The Korean Society of Ginseng 2014 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.38 No.1

Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric inflammation includes induction of inflammatory mediators interleukin (IL)-8 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which are mediated by oxidant-sensitive transcription factor NF-${\kappa}B$. High levels of lipid peroxide (LPO) and increased activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), a biomarker of neutrophil infiltration, are observed in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa. Panax ginseng Meyer, a Korean herb medicine, is widely used in Asian countries for its biological activities including anti-inflammatory efficacy. The present study aims to investigate whether Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) inhibits H. pylori-induced gastric inflammation in Mongolian gerbils. One wk after intragastric inoculation with H. pylori, Mongolian gerbils were fed with either the control diet or the diet containing RGE (200 mg RGE/gerbil) for 6 wk. The following were determined in gastric mucosa: the number of viable H. pylori in stomach; MPO activity; LPO level; mRNA and protein levels of keratinocyte chemoattractant factor (KC, a rodent IL-8 homolog), IL-$1{\beta}$, and iNOS; protein level of phospho-$I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$(which reflects the activation of NF-${\kappa}B$); and histology. As a result, RGE suppressed H. pylori-induced mRNA and protein levels of KC, IL-$1{\beta}$, and iNOS in gastric mucosa. RGE also inhibited H. pylori-induced phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and increases in LPO level and MPO activity of gastric mucosa. RGE did not affect viable H. pylori colonization in the stomach, but improved the histological grade of infiltration of poly-morphonuclear neutrophils, intestinal metaplasia, and hyperplasia. In conclusion, RGE inhibits H. pyloriinduced gastric inflammation by suppressing induction of inflammatory mediators (KC, IL-$1{\beta}$, iNOS), MPO activity, and LPO level in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa.

Decomposition of Paraoxon and Parathion by Amines, HOO- and OH- Ions: Reaction Mechanism and Origin of the α-Effect

Bae, Ae-Ri,Lee, Jieun,Um, Ik-Hwan Korean Chemical Society 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.1

The second-order rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of paraoxon 1 and parathion 2 with a series of alicyclic secondary amines, $OH^-$ and $HOO^-$ ions in $H_2O$ at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. A linear Br${\o}$nsted-type plot with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.40 was obtained for the reactions of 1 with amines and $OH^-$. The reaction has been concluded to proceed through a concerted mechanism. $HOO^-$ deviates positively from the linear Br${\o}$nsted-type plot, implying that the ${\alpha}$-effect is operative. The magnitude of the ${\alpha}$-effect ($k_{HOO^-}/k_{OH^-}$) was found to be ca. 55 for the reaction of 1 and 290 for that of parathion 2, indicating that $HOO^-$ is highly effective in decomposition of the toxic phosphorus compounds although it is over 4 $pK_a$ units less basic than $OH^-$. Among the theories suggested as origins of the ${\alpha}$-effect (e.g., TS stabilization through an intramolecular Hbonding interaction, solvent effect, and polarizability effect), polarizability effect appears to be the most important factor for the ${\alpha}$-effect in this study, since the polarizable $HOO^-$ exhibits a larger ${\alpha}$-effect for the reaction of the more polarizable substrate 2.
