      • Ritual Music in Prehistoric China

        Based on evidences from historical documents (including mythology and legend) and archaeological findings (musical instruments and other artifacts), this paper discusses the ritual element in prehistoric music of China, and the connection between archaeology and historiography. Classical texts such as Shanhaijing, Shangshu, and Lüshi chunqiu describe the importance of ritual in the performances of music and dance. These descriptions, when combined with visual images from archaeological findings of painted pottery decorated with dancers' images in Qinghai and other places, rock paintings in Yunnan, and musical instruments of the Neolithic Age of the Jiahu and Taosi cultures, underline the importance of ritual in prehistoric music of China. The role and meaning of ritual in prehistoric music of China can thus be constructed by analyzing historical documents in conjunction with archaeological findings within their cultural-historical contexts.

      • Illumination Invariant Chinese Chessboard Reconstruction Based on Color Image

        This paper introduces a new approach based on binarized Gabor filters and Hough transform to reconstruct Chinese chessboard by computation. Firstly, Gabor transform is performed directly on an original color image of chessboard to obtain Gabor filters in which only interested lines are kept by selecting appropriate parameters. Secondly, Gabor filters image is binarized and thinned and then lines are detected by Hough transform. Thirdly, a binarized Gabor filters’image is affine rectified and three parameters which dominate reconstruction of chessboard are measured and coordinates of any crossing points in the chessboard can be calculated based on priori information and measured data. Finally, experiments have been conducted to verify illumination invariant feature of proposed approach. Results reveal that this new approach is more robust to illumination change. Comparing to conventional method, it is obviously superior and has been applied in a robust machine vision system for Chinese chess playing robot.

        Analysis of structural dynamic reliability based on the probability density evolution method

        A new dynamic reliability analysis of structure under repeated random loads is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is developed based on the idea that the probability density of several times random loads can be derived from the probability density of single-time random load. The reliability prediction models of structure based on time responses under several times random loads with and without strength degradation are obtained by using the stress-strength interference theory and probability density evolution method. The resulting differential equations in the prediction models can be solved by using the forward finite difference method. Then, the probability density functions of strength redundancy of the structures can be obtained. Finally, the structural dynamic reliability can be calculated using integral method. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated numerically through a speed reducer. The results have shown that the proposed method is practicable, feasible and gives reasonably accurate prediction.

        Spectral Analysis and Prediction of the Wave Forces Acting on Coastal Bridge Decks

        The wave action on a box girder-type bridge deck is experimentally investigated in this study. Two types of incident waves, namely, regular waves (RWs) and focused waves (FWs), are tested. Fourier, wavelet, and Hilbert spectra of the vertical wave forces are obtained and analyzed. Four different methods are then applied to obtain the low- and high-frequency components of the total vertical wave force. Based on the separation results, the relationship between the wave force and wave crest amplitude is thereafter examined. An empirical formula is proposed to predict the vertical wave force. It is hoped that the aforementioned empirical formula may be widely applied during bridge design.

        A New Method for Piping Risk Evaluation on Unconfined Aquifers under Dewatering of Deep Foundation Pits

        This paper presents a new method to evaluate the piping risk of unconfined sandy cobble aquifers during the dewatering of deep foundation pits. Firstly, the possibility of piping is judged according to the particle size distribution and pore diameter of the sandy cobble stratum. Secondly, the critical hydraulic gradients of particles with different sizes are calculated according to the pipe flow model. Thirdly, the hydraulic gradient around the foundation pit during the dewatering process is calculated by numerical method. Then, combined with the distribution of hydraulic gradient around the foundation pit and the critical hydraulic gradients of particles with different sizes, the range of moveable particles with different sizes in the surrounding stratum is evaluated. Finally, according to the sandy cobble aquifers conditions and the influence of particle movement on the stratum, the level of piping risk is determined. This method was successfully applied to evaluate the piping risk of Tawan Station in Luoyang Metro Line No.1, and according to the risk evaluation the pensile curtain was recommended for the retaining structure in this case. From the satisfied applications, this method is a reference for the evaluation of piping risk and selection of retaining structure when considering the impact of the dewatering in deep foundation pit with unconfined aquifers on the surrounding stratum.

        Efficient treatment of anthraquinone dye wastewater by adsorption using sunflower torus-like magnesium hydroxide microspheres

        Novel sunflower torus-like magnesium hydroxide (MH) microsphere particles were prepared by a facile one-step, self-assembly method. The synthesized products and the mechanism of adsorption of samples of the anthraquinone dyes reactive blue 19 (RB19) and alizarin red S (ARS) were analyzed by different modern characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The adsorptive potential of the as-prepared microspheres for the removal of RB19 and ARS in aqueous solution was evaluated. The effects of multiple condition parameters, including, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, wastewater pH, rotating speed and sodium chloride concentration on the removal of the dyes from the wastewater were studied in detail. The effect of the structural and shape properties of the MH adsorbent on the dye adsorption performances was also studied. The results showed that sunflower torus-like MH was an effective adsorbent for dye removal. The removal rates of ARS and RB19 were 91.65% and 83.03%, respectively, under the optimized conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the microspheres was 349.85mg/g for ARS and 231.78mg/g for RB19 at 25 oC. The equilibrium adsorption experimental data of the microsphere adsorption conformed to the Freundlich isotherm for ARS and the Langmuir isotherm for RB19. The adsorption kinetics experimental studies showed that the pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order model perfectly fit for both ARS and RB19 microsphere adsorption. RB19 and ARS were absorbed on the sunflower torus-like MH surface via the formation of H-bonds. Thus, the sunflower torus-like MH microsphere particles are an effective purifying agent for the removal of the anthraquinone dyes ARS and RB19 from wastewater.

        SOC ESTIMATION OF Li-ION BATTERY BASED ON IMPROVED EKF ALGORITHM

        The state of charge (SOC) is one of the important performance indicators of battery, which provides an important basis for the management and control of Battery Management System (BMS). In view of the characteristics of lithium iron phosphate battery, considering the model accuracy and calculation amount, the equivalent circuit model of improved PNGV was selected. Based on that, an improved Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm was adopted to estimate the state of charge (SOC) of Li-ion battery, which covariance matrix was modified by the Levenberg-Marquardt method. At the end of this paper, the SOC estimation algorithm was verified by MATLAB simulations. The results show that compared with the standard EKF, the improved EKF has higher estimation accuracy and anti-interference ability, and has better convergence in the estimation process.

      • Examining China's Internet Policies through a Bibliometric Approach

        In order to understand China's internet governance, this paper examined 1,931 Internet policies of China by bibliometric techniques. Specifically, the bibliometric techniques include simple document counting, co-word analysis, collaboration network analysis and citation analysis. The findings include: (1) China's Internet legislations mainly emphasized e-commerce and Internet governance, and, to some extent, neglected personal data protection; (2) China's Internet is under intensive multiple regulatory controls by central government. A large number of government agencies are involved in Internet policy-making. The Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Information Leading Group of the State Council, enforced fewer policy documents, but occupy higher positions in the Internet governance hierarchy; (3) China's Internet legislation system is primarily composed of industry-specific administrative rules, rather than laws or administrative regulations. Nevertheless, laws and administrative regulations received significantly more citations owing to their superior force. This paper also discussed current gaps in China's internet governance and how the country's internet policies are situated in the broader global context.

        The effects of a short sequence enhancer (50-GTGAAATAAATGCAAATAAAGT) and its derived sequences on green fluorescent protein expression

        Cis-regulatory elements are regions of DNAthat regulate the expression of genes located on that samemolecule of DNA. Though these elements are important forgene expression regulation, the functions of cis elementsremain largely unknown. To explore the mechanisms ofgene activation by short sequence enhancers, we examinedthe enhancer activity of short sequence DNA and itsderived sequences using a GFP expression system. Wefound that AA sequence (50-GTGAAATAAATGCAAATAAAGT) induced strong GFP gene expression, while7pieA (50-GTGAAAAAAATGCAAAAAAAGT) did not. We mutated the five T bases of the AA sequence to A, C orG. Our findings indicated that sequences retaining the 7thand/or 17th Ts possessed strong enhancer activity. RT-PCRand RNA synthesis inhibition analysis using actinomycin Drevealed that the enhanced GFP gene expression inducedby the AA sequence occurred at the transcriptional level. To determine whether the AA sequence formed a secondarystructure via atypical complementation, PAGE methodwas used, and the results showed that the AA sequenceformed a secondary structure. Our results support previousevidence that AATAAA is an important composition of ciselements (enhancer/promoter), and suggest that the formationof an unstable stem-loop structure via atypicalcomplementation may be a new mechanism of enhanceractivity.
