Spectral Analysis and Prediction of the Wave Forces Acting on Coastal Bridge Decks

Qinghe Fang,Jianjun Zhou,Peng Zhou 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.5

The wave action on a box girder-type bridge deck is experimentally investigated in this study. Two types of incident waves, namely, regular waves (RWs) and focused waves (FWs), are tested. Fourier, wavelet, and Hilbert spectra of the vertical wave forces are obtained and analyzed. Four different methods are then applied to obtain the low- and high-frequency components of the total vertical wave force. Based on the separation results, the relationship between the wave force and wave crest amplitude is thereafter examined. An empirical formula is proposed to predict the vertical wave force. It is hoped that the aforementioned empirical formula may be widely applied during bridge design.

Evaluation of Biaxial Strength Deterioration for Coastal Bridge Piers under Non-uniform Corrosion

Wenting Yuan,Qinghe Fang,Zhaoxing Dong 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.26 No.3

Coastal bridge piers in the corrosive marine environment inevitably deteriorate over time, leading to a reduction in their strength. In the present study, a biaxial strength prediction method for non-uniform corroded bridge piers under axial force and biaxial bending moments is proposed by extending the applicable range of the load contour method. First, a method to establish the three-dimensional interaction surface is developed on the basis of the fiber-section model, which considers the two-dimensional chloride diffusion, the degradation of reinforcement and concrete. The proposed methodology is verified by a biaxial quasi-static test of the locally corroded bridge column specimens. Then, through further case study, the time-dependent characteristics of the interaction surface for bridge piers in the splash and tidal region and the atmospheric region are investigated. Finally, the expression of surface exponent is obtained from the interaction surface, which can be used in Bresler’s load contour method to evaluate the deterioration in the biaxial strength of coastal bridge piers. The analytical results conclude that the expression of surface exponent can be divided into three stages including the constant stage, decrease stage and increase stage during the pier’s service life. Axial compression ratio and corrosion degree are two important factors which influence the biaxial strength deterioration for different corrosion regions of the coastal bridge pier.

Application of HHT for Online Detection of Inter-Area Short Circuits of Rotor Windings of Turbo-Generators Based on the Thermodynamics Modeling Method

Wang, Liguo,Wang, Yi,Xu, Dianguo,Fang, Bo,Liu, Qinghe,Zou, Jing The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2011 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.11 No.5

This paper focuses on monitoring and predicting the short circuit faults of the rotor windings of large turbo-generator systems. For the purpose of increasing efficiency and decreasing maintenance cost, a method that combines the HHT (Hilbert Huang Transform) with a wavelet has been studied. This method is based on analyzing a classical Albright detecting coil. Due to the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) of the HHT the exact location of a short circuit of rotor windings may be given. However, a part of the useful information is eliminated by the unreasonable decomposing scale of the wavelet. Based on the thermodynamics modeling method, this study was illustrated with a 50MW turbo-generator system that is installed in Northern China. The analysis results, which have very good agreement with those of a previous study, show that the method of combining the HHT with a wavelet is an effective way to analyze and predict the short circuit faults of the rotor windings of large generators, such as supercritical turbo-generator systems and wind turbo-generator systems. This work can offer a useful reference for analyzing smart grids by improving the power quality of a distribution network that is supplied by a turbo-generator system.
