      • Staged Improvement in Awareness of Disease for Elderly Cancer Patients in Southern China

        Li, Xing,Dong, Min,Wen, Jing-Yun,Wei, Li,Ma, Xiao-Kun,Xing, Yan-Fang,Deng, Yun,Chen, Zhan-Hong,Chen, Jie,Ruan, Dan-Yun,Lin, Ze-Xiao,Wang, Tian-Tian,Wu, Dong-Hao,Liu, Xu,Hu, Hai-Tao,Lin, Jia-Yu,Li, Zhu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.15

Background: In mainland China, awareness of disease of elderly cancer patients largely relies on the patients' families. We developed a staged procedure to improve their awareness of disease. Materials and Methods: Participants were 224 elderly cancer patients from 9 leading hospitals across Southern China. A questionnaire was given to the oncologists in charge of each patient to evaluate the interaction between family and patients, patient awareness of their disease and participation in medical decision-making. After first cycles of treatment, increased information of disease was given to patients with cooperation of the family. Then patient awareness of their disease and participation in medical decision-making was documented. Results: Among the 224 cancer elderly patients, 26 (11.6%) made decisions by themselves and 125 (55.8%) delegated their rights of decision-making to their family. Subordinate family members tended to play a passive role in decision-making significantly. Patients participating more in medical decision-making tended to know more about their disease. However, in contrast to the awareness of disease, patient awareness of violation of medical recommendations was reversely associated with their participation in medical decision-making. Improvement in awareness of diagnosis, stages and prognosis was achieved in about 20% elderly cancer patients. About 5% participated more actively in medical decision-making. Conclusions: Chinese elderly cancer patient awareness of disease and participation in medical decision-making is limited and relies on their family status. The staged procedure we developed to improve patient awareness of disease proved effective.

<P><B>Significance</B></P><P>Metal halide perovskites attract great interest for a wide range of applications due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. The development of environmentally friendly halide perovskite materials with various crystal structures and compositions offers unprecedented opportunities to achieve desired properties and applications. In this work, we demonstrated an In-based, charge-ordered all-inorganic halide double perovskite with the composition of Cs2In(I)In(III)Cl6 synthesized by solid-state reaction. High-pressure optical properties were studied, and a pressure-driven, fully reversible semiconductor–metal phase transition was discovered. This In-based charge-ordered structure may inspire new understanding of halide perovskite as well as provide a platform for future discovery of exotic electronic phenomena such as high-<I>T</I>C superconductivity in halide perovskite compounds.</P><P>Phase transitions in halide perovskites triggered by external stimuli generate significantly different material properties, providing a great opportunity for broad applications. Here, we demonstrate an In-based, charge-ordered (In+/In3+) inorganic halide perovskite with the composition of Cs2In(I)In(III)Cl6 in which a pressure-driven semiconductor-to-metal phase transition exists. The single crystals, synthesized via a solid-state reaction method, crystallize in a distorted perovskite structure with space group <I>I</I>4/<I>m</I> with <I>a</I> = 17.2604(12) Å, <I>c</I> = 11.0113(16) Å if both the strong reflections and superstructures are considered. The supercell was further confirmed by rotation electron diffraction measurement. The pressure-induced semiconductor-to-metal phase transition was demonstrated by high-pressure Raman and absorbance spectroscopies and was consistent with theoretical modeling. This type of charge-ordered inorganic halide perovskite with a pressure-induced semiconductor-to-metal phase transition may inspire a range of potential applications.</P>

Knockout of the EgriBLOS2 gene results in the transparent integuments of Ectropis grisescens larvae

        Li Jia-Li,Zhuang Xiang-Lin,Yuan Ting-Ting,Cai Xiao-Ming,Luo Zong-Xiu,Bian Lei,Chen Zong-Mao,Li Zhao-Qun,Liu Nai-Yong 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.1

The body colors of insects have evolved specialized roles in body protection, signaling and physiology. In some case, the larvae can camouflage their body colors to adapt the habitants and protect themselves. However, the genetic and molecular basis on larval body colors of the tea geometrid, Ectropis grisescens, remains poorly known. Here, we reported an effect of the lysosome-related organelles complex-1, subunit 2 (EgriBLOS2) gene knockout on larval integuments of E. grisescens, by using a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system. Combining transcriptomic data and PCR approaches, we first identified the EgriBLOS2 gene from E. grisescens, which encoded 137 amino acids and comprised 3 introns. In the phylogenetic analysis, EgriBLOS2 clustered in the Lepidoptera clade with high conservation to members in other lepidopteran species. Developmental expression profiles revealed that EgriBLOS2 was constantly tran scribed at each stage, in which its expression was significantly lower in 2nd instar larvae than that of other instars. After injecting EgriBLOS2-specific guide RNA and Cas9 messenger RNA into eggs, 70% of larvae showed the translucent integuments in G0 generation, with an emphasis on black splayed patterns in the 2nd and 8th segments of abdomens. However, some typical characteristics of larvae were not obviously changed in mutant instars, such as ocelli, mouthparts and other appendants. This study has unraveled the roles of EgriBLOS2 in the formation of larval integument colors, and provides an alternative strategy for pest management based on the colors in this species.

Acupuncture for ventilator-dependent patients at a hospital-based respiratory care center: A randomized controlled trial

        Jia-Ming Chen,Wan-Li Chiang,Bin-Chuan Ji,Ruei-Jhe Jhang,Pei-Hsin Chen,Ya-Lun Li,Che-Ju Chang,Sung-Yen Huang,Tsung-Chieh Lee,Chia-Yun Chen,Ching-Hsiung Lin,Sheng-Hao Lin 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.4

Background: In intensive care units, mechanical ventilation is an important therapy to help patients with dysp- nea. However, long-term ventilator dependence would consume huge medical resources and increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of the acupuncture combined with western medical care on ventilator parameters in ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, 80 ventilator-dependent patients aged 20 to 80 years old were randomly assigned to acupuncture group and control group in the respiratory care center (RCC) of Changhua Christian Hospital. Besides regular medical care and therapy, participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture therapy at the same 17 acu-points for 20 minutes once a day, a total of 12 sessions. The ventilator parameters were recorded to evaluate the respiratory efficiency for all participants. The primary outcome was rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), and secondary outcomes were respiratory rate (RR), tidal volume (TV) and ventilation per minute (MV). Results: Though there was no significant difference in the parameter between the acupuncture group and the control group, we found the trend of decreasing RSBI in the acupuncture group. In subgroup analyses, the mean of RSBI significantly decreased 16.02 (with the SD in 60.84) in acupuncture group, while it increased 17.84 (with the SD in 39.38) in control group (p = 0.036) after 12 sessions. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment can improve breathing ability of patients with respirator dependence in respiratory care center.

Vibration analysis of new drill string system with hydro-oscillator in horizontal well

        Jia-lin Tian,Zhi Yang,You Li,Lin Yang,Chun-ming Wu,Gang Liu,Chang-fu Yuan 대한기계학회 2016 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.30 No.6

With the growth of oil and gas resource demand, the hydro-oscillator is widely used to enhance the Rate of penetration (ROP) and improve the efficacy in drilling various wells. The vibration model is the key issue of dynamics analysis and optimization of downhole tools. For the vibration analysis of the new drill string system with hydro-oscillator in the horizontal well, based on the design of the new hydro-oscillator and its operation conditions, the kinematics expressions are presented. Combined with the vibration force calculation results of the hydro-oscillator, the dynamics model of the new drill string system is established. Furthermore, the important features of vibration frequency, displacement, velocity and acceleration are discussed in the numerical example calculation results. By comparing the results of the calculation and experiment test, we can verify the correctness of the analysis model. With the hydro-oscillator vibration effect, the static friction between the drill string and wellbore is changed to the dynamic friction, so it can result in a significant increase in run length. At the same time, the ROP can be enhanced with the vibration effect. Moreover, with the parameters’ adjustment according to the operation conditions, the analysis method and model can also provide references to the study of similar downhole tools dynamics or mechanical properties.

A Novel Distributed Equivalent Circuit Model for Single-Core Cables

        Li Rui-Fang,Hu Hao,Cao Xiao-Bin,Li Zhong-Mei,Li Jun-Hao,Zhu Chuan-Lin,Liu Le-Jia 대한전기학회 2024 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.19 No.1

The number of cables used for urban power supply increases rapidly. The sheath current in these cables, which is generated via induction, produces a current loss. When the situation is serious, the ground lead and the middle connector of the cable will be burned. In this paper, the existing single-core cable equivalent circuit model is used to calculate the sheath current of a 3-phase cable under the condition of non-transposition and cross connection. By comparing the calculated results with the simulation and the experimental results, it is found that the current distribution law for the sheath, which was obtained using the existing model, difers substantially from both the simulation and actual measurements. The error reason of the existing model is revealed, and it is found that the magnitude and phase of the current in the metal sheath of the cable varies with the position under the combined efect of distributed capacitances in the cable and the core-current fux, especially for a 3-phase cross connection, each section of the cable does not meet Kirchhof’s laws, but the sheath electric current in the existing models are considered equal everywhere. Therefore, a novel cable equivalent model is proposed in this paper, which is based on a distributed circuit, and an equation to calculate the sheath current is derived. The model presented in this paper corrects the problems of the existing model, which can be applied to power system, subway, high-speed rail, and any application of single-core cables.
