The enzyme r-glutamyl transpeptidase(GGT) catalyzes the hydrolysis of r-glutamyl peptides such as glutathione and the transfer of their r-glutamyl moieties to amino acids and peptides. Since GGT was discovered in 1950 by Hanes et al., it has been established as useful supportive liver function test in various hepatobiliary diseases. Since Zein et al. found in 1970 that serum GGt activities were markedly increased in chronic alcoholism, even though both transaminase and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) being normal, a number of studies have shown a elvations of GGT in alcoholism and good correlation between GGT and amount of alcohol intake. Recently, it has been suggested that serum GGT activity may have a value as a sereening test for alcoholism. This study was conducted on 459 male adults who were examined periodically for physical checkup at Chunan hospital of Soonchunhyang University College of Medicine in October, 1991, with structural questionaire about their drinking habits. Among 459 male adults serum GGT was determined in 236 healthy men consisted of 40 teetotalers and 196 drinkers assessed by history taking, physical examination, and liver function test. This study was attempted with following objectives : 1) to investigate a correlation between serum GGT activity and amount of alcohol intake(grams of pure ethanol per week) and between serum GGT activity and duration of alcohol intake by years, and 2) to investigate whether increased serum GGT activity reflects amount of alcohol intake and duration. The result obtained are as follows; 1) The means of serum GOT in 40 teetotalers and 196 healthy drinkers were 24.8±6.0 U/L and 25.1±5.3 U/L, respectively. The means of two groups showed no statistically significant difference at p >0.05. 2) The means of serum GPT in 40 teetotalers and 196 healthy drinkers were 23.7±8.2 U/L and 22.5±7.3 U/L, respectively. The means of two groups showed no statistically significant difference at p>0.05. 3) The means of serum GGT in 40 teetotalers and 196 healthy drinkers were 24.3±7.3 U/L and 38.9±20.3 U/L, respectively. The mean of serum GGT in healthy drinkers is higher than the mean of serum GGT in teetotalers. The means of two groups showed statistically significant difference at p<0.05. 4) In 196 healthy drinkers the increase of serum GGT activity was paralleled with increasing alcohol intake. Means of serum GGT activities of 5 groups classified by amount of alcohol intake showed statistically significant difference at p<0.05. But serum GGT activity was increased only in long-standing frinkers over 20 years according to duration of alcohol intake. 5) The probability of being a heavy drinker was increased with increasing serum GGT activity and presumably increased to 60% at 80U/L or more of serum GGT activity. 6) Serum GGT activity showed statistically significant correlation with amount of alcohol intake(r=0.3237) and weak correlation with duration of alcohol intake(r=1.1971).
History of Bioelectrical Study and the Electrophysiology of the Primo Vascular System

<P><I>Background</I>. Primo vascular system is a new anatomical structure whose research results have reported the possibility of a new circulatory system similar to the blood vascular system and cells. Electrophysiology, which measures and analyzes bioelectrical signals tissues and cells, is an important research area for investigating the function of tissues and cells. The bioelectrical study of the primo vascular system has been reported by using modern techniques since the early 1960s by Bonghan Kim. This paper reviews the research result of the electrophysiological study of the primo vascular system for the discussion of the circulatory function. We hope it would help to study the electrophysiology of the primo vascular system for researchers. This paper will use the following exchangeable expressions: Kyungrak system = Bonghan system = Bonghan circulatory system = primo vascular system = primo system; Bonghan corpuscle = primo node; Bonghan duct = primo vessel. We think that objective descriptions of reviewed papers are more important than unified expressions when citing the papers. That said, this paper will unify the expressions of the primo vascular system.</P>
악성 대장 폐쇄 환자에서 자가팽창성 금속 스텐트의 임상적 효과: 내시경적 및 방사선적 삽입법 비교

Background/Aims: This study compared the clinical outcomes between endoscopic and radiologic placement of self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) in patients with malignant colorectal obstruction. Methods: In total, 111 patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study between January 2003 and June 2011 at Seoul National University Boramae Hospital. Technical and clinical success rates, complication rates, and stent patency were compared between using an endoscopic (n=73) or radiologic (n=38) method during the SEMS placement procedure. Results: The technical success rate was higher in the endoscopic method than in the radiologic method (100% [73/73] vs. 92.1% [35/38], respectively; p=0.038). In addition, in 3 of the remaining 35 patients in the radiologic-method group, adjuvant endoscopic assistance was required. In the six patients (including the three aforementioned patients), the causes of technical failure were the inability to pass the guidewire into an obstructive lesion due to a tortuous, curved angulation of the sigmoid or descending colon (n=4), and a difficult approach to a lesion located at the descending or transverse colon (n=2). The clinical success rate, complication rate, and stent patency did not differ significantly between the two methods (p=0.424, 0.303, and 0.423, respectively). Conclusions: When the colorectal obstruction had a tortuous, curved angulation of the colon or was located at or proximal to the descending colon, the endoscopic method of SEMS placement appears to be more useful than the radiologic method. However, once SEMS placement was technically successful, the clinical success rate, complication rate, and stent patency did not differ with the method of insertion. Background : This study was carried out to understand the effect of seedling weight (SW) on growth and flowering in Panax ginseng. Methods and Results : The testing materials were Chunpoong (CP), Yunpoong (YP) and Jakyeongjong (JK). The increase of seedling (1yr) weight led to an increase in ratio of flowering plant and in number of flower per plant. The seed setting rate of two year-old plant (CP, YP, JK) increased with increase of SW at the planting time (PT) and number of flower per plant of three year-old plant (CP, YP) increased also. In the two year-old plant (JK), the ratio of three leaves per plant was 8.8, 19.6, 31.0, 42.0, 44.7 and 58.2%, respectively, in the SW of >0.6, 0.6~0.8, 0.8~1.0, 1.02~1.2, 1.2~1.4 and 1.4g<. The growth of ginseng plant was good with increase of SW at the PT. Conclusion : There was a highly positive correlation between seedling weight and flowering characteristics.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate level of knowledge and attitude about organ donation in university and provide basic information on correct education and promotion. Method. The sample is consisted of 90 the students related to health and 90 general college students ; total 180 students in J city. The questionnaires were used to obtain the results. Data was collected from November 6th to 8th, 2013. For data analysis, the SPSS for window 12.0 K program was utilized to get descriptive statistics including the percentage, average, standard deviation and t-test. Results. Comparing the results between a series of health students and general college students, a series of health students showed high level of more knowledge and more positive attitude about organ donation than general college students. A series of health showed significant correlation but general college didn't show significant correlation. Conclusion. To educate correct knowledge draw positive attitude about organ donation is needed to improve the level of Knowledge and Attitude about organ donation.

<P>The thermal evolution of the nano-grain structure and surface of ultra thin copper(<SMALL>II</SMALL>) phthalocyanine (CuPc) films was investigated by real time grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GI-SAXS) and X-ray reflectivity measurements. The evolution was strongly affected by the substrate surface energy. On hydrophilic Si, CuPc film consisted of disk shaped nano-grains of two different sizes. The larger grains showed lateral crystal growth and planarization by thermal annealing, while the smaller grains did not increase in size. The grains formed clusters at high temperature. On hydrophobic Si, CuPc nano-grains are more randomly distributed. The crystal size did not increase in size upon thermal annealing. Thermal annealing induced a more random distribution of nano-grains with an increase in roughness, and large islands formed by the coalescence of small grains.
