        Effects of Screening on Gastric Cancer Management: Comparative Analysis of the Results in 2006 and in 2011

        Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effect of screening by using endoscopy on the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: The clinicopathologic characteristics of gastric cancer were compared in individuals who underwent an endoscopy because of symptoms (non-screening group) or for screening purposes (screening group). The distributions of gastric cancer stages and treatment modalities in 2006 and 2011 were compared. Results: The proportion of patients in the screening group increased from 45.1% in 2006 to 65.4% in 2011 (P<0.001). The proportion of stage I cancers in the entire patient sample also increased (from 60.5% in 2006 to 70.6% in 2011; P=0.029). In 2011, the percentages of patients with cancer stages I, II, III, and IV were 79.9%, 8.2%, 10.9%, and 1.1%, respectively, in the screening group, and 47.9%, 10.8%, 29.8%, and 11.5%, respectively, in the non-screening group. The proportion of laparoscopic and robotic surgeries increased from 9.6% in 2006 to 48.3% in 2011 (P<0.001), and endoscopic submucosal dissection increased from 9.8% in 2006 to 19.1% 2011 (P<0.001). Conclusions: The proportion of patients diagnosed with gastric cancer by using the screening program increased between 2006 and 2011. This increase was associated with a high proportion of early-stage cancer diagnoses and increased use of minimally invasive treatments.

      • Application of DIC Method to Drop Test of Transport Container for Radioactive Wastes

        For transport containers for radioactive wastes, a drop test should be performed at a height of 0.3– 1.2 m on a rigid target depending on the weight as a normal condition in the regulation. In the drop test, a strain gauge is commonly used to measure the local strain, and the position of the strain gauges is determined by the experiences of the engineer in advance of the test. For this reason, the strains can be measured at only predetermined points. The DIC (Digital Image Correlation) method using highspeed cameras can be used to measure the change in strain over the region of interest. In addition, it is possible to measure effectively even in areas with high strain gradients that are difficult to measure with strain gauges. Therefore, the DIC method can measure the strain change according to time over the entire load path. When the drop test of the transport container is performed, the impact load is delivered through the lower corner fittings-corner posts-upper corner fittings-lids. In this study, white spray was sprayed on these main load path, and black speckles were created on the spayed surface to trace the rigid motion of speckles. The images taken during the drop test can be used to create a strain field over region of interest.

        Influence of heritability on craniofacial soft tissue characteristics of monozygotic twins, dizygotic twins, and their siblings using Falconer’s method and principal components analysis

        Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of heritability on the craniofacial soft tissue cephalometric characteristics of monozygotic (MZ) twins, dizygotic (DZ) twins, and their siblings (SIB). Methods: The samples comprised Korean adult twins and their siblings (mean age, 39.8 years; MZ group, n = 36 pairs; DZ group, n = 13 pairs of the same gender; and SIB group, n = 26 pairs of the same gender). Thirty cephalometric variables were measured to characterize facial profile, facial height, soft-tissue thickness, and projection of nose and lip. Falconer’s method was used to calculate heritability (low heritability, h2 < 0.2; high heritability, h2 > 0.9). After principal components analysis (PCA) was performed to extract the models, we calculated the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) value and heritability of each component. Results: The MZ group exhibited higher ICC values for all cephalometric variables than DZ and SIB groups. Among cephalometric variables, the highest h2 (MZ-DZ) and h2 (MZ-SIB) values were observed for the nasolabial angle (NLA, 1.544 and 2.036), chin angle (1.342 and 1.112), soft tissue chin thickness (2.872 and 1.226), and upper lip thickness ratio (1.592 and 1.026). PCA derived eight components with 84.5% of a cumulative explanation. The components that exhibited higher values of h2 (MZ-DZ) and h2 (MZ-SIB) were PCA2, which includes facial convexity, NLA, and nose projection (1.026 and 0.972), and PCA7, which includes chin angle and soft tissue chin thickness (2.107 and 1.169). Conclusions: The nose and soft tissue chin were more influenced by genetic factors than other soft tissues.

      • Electrothermal Local Annealing via Graphite Joule Heating on Two-Dimensional Layered Transistors

        <P>A simple but powerful device platform for electrothermal local annealing (ELA) via graphite Joule heating on the surface of transition-metal dichalcogenide, is suggested here to sustainably restore intrinsic electrical properties of atomically thin layered materials. Such two-dimensional materials are easily deteriorated by undesirable surface/interface adsorbates and are screened by a high metal-to-semiconductor contact resistance. The proposed ELA allows one to expect a better electrical performance such as an excess electron doping, an enhanced carrier mobility, and a reduced surface traps in a monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS<SUB>2</SUB>)/graphite heterostructure. The thermal distribution of local heating measured by an infrared thermal microscope and estimated by a finite element calculation shows that the annealing temperature reaches up to >400 K at ambient condition and the high efficiency of site-specific annealing is demonstrated unlike the case of conventional global thermal annealing. This ELA platform can be further promoted as a practical gas sensor application. From an O<SUB>2</SUB> cycling test and a low-frequency noise spectroscopy, the graphite on top of the MoS<SUB>2</SUB> continuously recovers its initial condition from surface adsorbates. This ELA technique significantly improves the stability and reliability of its gas sensing capability, which can be expanded in various nanoscale device applications.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Nootropic nanocomplex with enhanced blood-brain barrier permeability for treatment of traumatic brain injury-associated neurodegeneration

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an intracranial injury which can induce immediate neuroinflammation and long-term neurological deficits. Methylene blue (MB) as a nootropic has a great potential to treat neurodegeneration after TBI because of its anti-inflmmatory and neuroprotective functions. However, its limited accumulation to the brain across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) remains a major hurdle to be overcome. In this paper, we present a polymer surfactant-encapsulated nanocomplex of MB as a delivery system with high BBB permeability for efficacious treatment of TBI-induced neurodegeneration. MB was formulated <I>via</I> electrostatically/hydrophobically directed assembly with fatty acid and Pluronic surfactant (F-127 or F-68) to construct nanocomplexes of two different colloidal sizes (<10 nm and ~108 nm in hydrodynamic diameter for NanoMB-127 and NanoMB-68, respectively). Compared to uncomplexed free MB, formulation into the ultrasmall nanocomplex (NanoMB-127) significantly enhanced the uptake of MB by blood-brain vascular endothelial bEnd3 cells <I>in vitro</I>, and indeed improved its BBB penetration upon systemic administration to normal mice <I>in vivo</I>. However, large-size NanoMB-68 showed negligible BBB crossing despite the efficient bEnd3 cell internalization <I>in vitro</I>, probably due to the unfavorable pharmacokinetic profile associated with its large particle size. By virtue of the efficient BBB penetration and cellular uptake, ultrasmall NanoMB-127 was shown to distinctively reduce the expression level of an inflammatory cytokine with no notable toxicity <I>in vitro</I> and also considerably prevent the neurodegeneration after TBI in mice at much lower doses than free MB. Overall, the Pluronic-supported nanocomplexation method allows efficient brain delivery of MB, offering a novel way of enhancing the efficacy of neurotherapeutics to treat brain diseases.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Cosolvent System에서 이온성 유기화합물의 생분해 및 흡착 특성

        The existing cosolvency-induced sorption model, which is used to predict the fate of organic solutes in a cosolvent system, is not capable of completely explaining the effects of various interactions between solutes, solvents, and sorbents. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the effect of functional groups and aromatic rings on sorption onto activated carbon in a methanol-water system. The experiment was conducted on a hybrid bioreactor, which consists of a Sorption module and a biodegradation module, was investigated for the enhanced treatment of a organic acid mixture. Benzoic acid, 1-naphthoic acid, and 9-anthroic acid were chosen as organic sorbates, and activated carbon was used as the sorbent. We also summarized information on the biodegradation of each kind of organic acids under cosolvent system. As the microbial population increases, it shows high organic acids removal efficiency. The equilibrium concentrations were analyzed via GC-FID. As explained by the existing cosolvency model, for organic acids at pH 3 (i.e., pK<sub>a</sub>>pH) and pH 7 (i.e., pK<sub>a</sub><pH), the sorption (K<sub>m</sub>) of organic acids decreased on adding methanol. On the other hand, this study showed unexpected results that do not consistent with the existing cosolvency model. At pH 7 for the CaCl<sub>2</sub> system, K<sub>m</sub> increases with increasing methanol volume fractions. A decrease in the dielectric constant of the liquid phase, caused by the presence of methanol, might result in an increase in K<sub>m</sub>. Regardless of the cosolvency power (σ), as the number of aromatic rings in the solute increases, K<sub>m</sub> is reduced in the order of benzoic acid > 1-naphthoic acid > 9-anthroic acid. In order to accurately predict the fate of acidic solutes in a variety of environment, studies for quantitatively estimating of effects of various interaction on the sorption should be conducted. Through the studies the current cosolvency induced sorption model can be advanced.

        본 논문에서는 0.18㎛ CMOS 공정을 이용하여 서브샘플링 직접변환방식 RF 수신기용을 위한 광대역 저잡음 증폭기를 구현하였다. 인버터-형태의 트랜스임피던스 입력단과 3차의 Chebyshev 매칭네트워크를 사용함으로써, 제안한 광대역 저잡음 증폭기 회로는 5.35㎓의 대역폭, 12~18㏈의 전력이득, 6.9~10.8㏈의 NF, 대역폭 내에서의 -10㏈ 이하의 입력 임피던스 매칭과 -24㏈ 이하의 출력 임피던스 매칭을 얻었다. 제작한 칩은 1.8V 단일 전원전압으로부터 32.4mW의 전력소모를 가지며, 0.56 x 1.0 ㎟의 칩 사이즈를 갖는다. In this paper, a wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA) has been realized in a 0.18mm CMOS technology for the applications of subsampling direct-conversion RF receivers. By exploiting the inverter-type transimpedance input stage with a 3rd-order Chebyshev matching network, the wideband LNA demonstrates the measured results of the -3㏈ bandwidth of 5.35㎓, the power gain (S21) of 12~18㏈, the noise figure (NF) of 6.9~10.8㏈, and the broa㏈and input/output impedance matching of less than -10㏈/-24㏈ within the bandwidth, respectively. The chip dissipates 32.4mW from a single 1.8V supply, and occupies the area of 0.56x1.0 ㎟.

        서브샘플링 직접변환 수신기용 광대역 증폭기 및 High-Q 대역통과 필터

        본 논문에서는 서브샘플링 기법을 이용한 직접변환 수신단에 이용할 수 있는 광대역 증폭기와 높은 Q-factor 값을 가지는 대역통과 필터(BPF) 회로를 0.18㎛ CMOS 공정을 이용하여 구현하였다. 광대역 증폭기는 5.4GHz의 대역폭 및 12㏈의 파워이득 특성을 가지며, 대역통과필터는 2.4㎓ Bluetooth 규격에서 동작할 수 있도록 설계하였다. RF 신호가 안테나를 통해 광대역 증폭기와 BPF를 통과한 후의 주파수응답 측정결과를 살펴보면, 2.34㎓에서 18.8㏈의 파워이득과 31㎒의 대역폭을 갖는다. 이는 대역통과 필터의 Q-factor 값이 75로써 매우 높은 선택도(selectivity) 특성을 나타낸다. 또한, 전체 칩은 8.6㏈의 noise-figure 특성과 대역폭 내에서 -12dB 이하의 입력 임피던스 매칭 (S11) 특성을 보이며, 전력소모는 1.8V 단일 전원전압으로부터 64.8㎽ 이고, 칩 면적은 1.0x1.0mm2 이다. In this paper, a cascade of a wideband amplifier and a high-Q bandpass filter (BPF) has been realized in a 0.18㎜ CMOS technology for the applications of subsampling direct-conversion receivers. The wideband amplifier is designed to obtain the -3㏈ bandwidth of 5.4㎓, and the high-Q BPF is designed to select a 2.4㎓ RF signal for the Bluetooth specifications. The measured results demonstrate 18.8dB power gain at 2.34㎓ with 31㎒ bandwidth, corresponding to the quality factor of 75. Also, it shows the noise figure (NF) of 8.6㏈, and the broadband input matching (S11) of less than -12㏈ within the bandwidth. The whole chip dissipates 64.8㎽ from a single 1.8V supply and occupies the area of 1.0x1.0mm2.
