        To find out the incidence and general characteristics of the spinal injury, this study was performed with analysis of 256 cases of spinal injured patients admitted in a general hospital in Tae jeon during the last 5 years, from January 1983 to December 1987, with the 9,077 total cases of injured patients including the spinal injury, admitted as the same period. We obtained the following results. 1. The incidence rate of the spinal injury among total injred patint was 2.8%, and among its causes, fall down was 10.7%, slip down was 4.1%, traffic accident was 2.4%, and direct blow and others was 0.7% in that order. The incidences of fall down, traffic accident, direct blow and others were increased anually. The seasonal incidence was 2.6% in Spring, 2.9% Summer and Autumn, and 3.0% in Winter. 2. The ratio between male and female was 2.1:1, and the most common cause of injury in female was slip down, but that in male was fall down, but traffic accident, direct blow and others were evenly distributed. 3. For the level of spinal injury, 46.1% was lumbar, 31.6% was thoracic, and 22.2% Was cervical vertebral injury. The injury to the cervical vertebrae was more frequent in traffic accident, but injury to the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae was more frequent in fall down cases. 4. For the nerve injury, 14.5% was complete paralysis, 9.7% was nerve root injury, and 7.0% was incomplete paralysis. Incomplete paralysis was more frequent in traffic accident cases, but complete paralysis and nerve root injury were frequent in fall down cases. 5. For the age distribution, the fifth decade was the most prevalent as 20.3%, but below the 19-year-old age group was the least as 3.9%. The incidence of third to sixth decade was higher. in male than female, but that of below the 19-year-old age group and over the 60-year-old age - group was reversed. 6. In the below the 19-year-old age group, the most frequent site of injury was cervical spine, but that was lumbar in third decade and that was thoracic in over the 60-year-old age group. The most frequent cause of injury in third, forth, and sixth decades was direct blow, but in fifth decade, that was fall down and in over the 60-year-old age group, that was slip down. 7. For the nerve injury, complete paralysis was frequent in sixth and fifth decade, incomplete paralysis was frequent in third and fourth decades, but nerve root injury was frequent in fifth decade. 8. For the comparison between male and female, cervical injury was more frequent in male, but lumbar injury was more frequent in female. Complete paralysis was more frequent in male than female. g, Most complete paralysis revealed in cervical and thoracic spinal injury, but most nerve root injury revealed in lumbar spinal injury. 10. There were 19.9% of spinal injured patients who had associated injury. The most frequent associated injury was extremity fracture as 58.7% and it was most frequent in traffic accident.

        Cardiac tumors, especially the primary tumors involving any part of the heart are extremely rare and its relative incidence has been reported to be approximately 0.02%. We report a patient with huge cardiac hemangioma who complained of shortness of breath, general weakness, and dizziness, Imaging study by echocardiography and computed tomography of thorax revealed a huge lobulating mass like a bunch of grapes in the right chamber of heart. The surgical exploration of thorax was performed and a histological diagnosis of spindle cell hemangioma was obtained by microscopy. The patient was treated by surgical resection of the tumor and doing well after surgery. Our experience indicated that prompt diagnosis and treatment of cardiac hemangioma is imperative for patients' prognosis.

      • 카본/페놀 복합재료의 제조와 그 전기전도성에 관한 연구

        The mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of spun carbon fiber/phenolic composites were tested and evaluated. The tensile and flexural strengths of carbon/phenolic composite specimens were 16.8 ksi and 25.0 ksi, respectively. The electrical conductivities of carbon/phenolic specimens were generally similar in the all range of test temperatre. The lowest electrical conductivity was observed at 150℃, which is originated from the morphology change due to the glass transition of cured phenolic matrix. The activation energy on the conductivity at the temperature range of 150∼190℃ was 0.196 eV.

        In this study, we made investigation into water permeation, solute separation, concentration and Na^(+), K^(+), Mg^(2+), Ca^(2+), Cl^(-), SO^(2)_(4)-, HCO^(-)_(3) ions separation of seawater by the revers osmosis process using a suitable semipermeable membrane. The different thickness of membranes were prepared. On heat treatment, temperature was 80℃ and thier effects were also investigated. The flat single module system was made to be capable of treating feed solution at 200-2000cc/min and 120 atm. The experimental results can be summerized as follows: 1) As the effective operating pressure increased, permeability of pure water proportionally increased. 2) As the exposure period of the manufactured membrane in air increased, permeation rate increased, but as the thickness of the membrane increased, permeation rate decreased. 3) The capacity for being reproductive of the manufactured membrane (CA: 30wt%, Formamide: 45wt%, Acetone: 25wt%) in their performance was less than 10-30% and agreed with that reported in the literature. 4) We could separated about 85-95% of salt ion in seawater using a flat single module system.

      • 다발성 골수종에서 저용량 thalidomide, cyclophosphamide, dexamethasone (TCD) 요법의 효과

        Background and Objectives : The immunomodulatory drug thalidomide can inhibit angiogenesis and induce apoptosis in experimental models. It can also induce marked and durable response in newly diagnosed myeloma patients. Thalidomide has been used at doses ranging from 200 to 800 mg with significant toxicity. No data are available on the impact of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone as initial therapy for myeloma patients. Design and Methods : To address this issue, newly diagnosed myeloma patients were treated with 50 mg/day thalidomide continuously and cyclophosphamide 150 mg/m², days 1-4 and dexamethasone 20 mg/m², days 1-5 and day 15-19, every month. Between October 2005 and October 2006, 14 patients (median age 54.5 years) were treated with low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. Results : After a minimum of two cycles of treatment, 5 patients (55.5%) showed a partial remission. After four cycles of treatment, 10 patients (83.3%) showed a partial remission (n=6) and complete remission (n=4). After a median follow-up of 15.4 months, 1 year overall survival rate was 82.0%. Thalidomide was well tolerated without serious toxic effects. Conclusions : The combination of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone demonstrates favorable response rate and 1 year overall survival rate in newly diagnosed myeloma. Severe toxicities were not seen with this combination.

        Geometric and Wave Optic Features in the Optical Transmission Patterns of Injection-molded Mesoscale Pyramid Prism Patterned Plates

        In this paper, mesoscale optical surface structures are found to possess both geometric and wave optics features. The study reveals that geometric optic analysis cannot correctly predict the experimental results of light transmission or reflection by mesoscale optical structures, and that, for reliable analyses, a hybrid approach incorporating both geometric and wave optic theories should be employed. By analyzing the transmission patterns generated by the mesoscale periodic pyramid prism plates, we show that the wave optic feature is mainly ascribed to the edge diffraction effect and we estimate the relative contributions of the wave optic diffraction effect and the geometric refraction effect to the total scattering field distribution with respect to the relative dimension of the structures.

        랫드를 이용한 할로겐 화합물의 흡입독성 연구

        Inhaled halogen compound was examined through micronucleus tests and toxicity tests using SD (Sprague-Dawley) rats with repeated dosages for six hours a day, five days a week, during four weeks. In four-week repeated exposure, no specific sign caused by the CF₃I compound was observed on the clinical symptoms, body weight variation, feed consumption, and urinalysis data in the testing groups with reference to the control group. In hematological and biochemical blood tests of the testing groups, the significant, but in their normal ranges, value dependences of glucose, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and etc., on the halogen carbohydride concentration was observed. In histo-pathological tests, no specific lesion or concentration dependent change due to the CF₃I compound dosage was observed m both sexes of the female and male in the tested animals. But, micronucleus tests on marrow cells extracted from the tested animals which were repeatedly exposed in the CF₃I compound during four weeks, the frequencies of micronuclei were significantly increased dose-dependently compared to the control groups.

        Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms of Apigenin: Inhibition of Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression, Adhesion of Monocytes to Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells, and Expression ofCellular Adhesion Molecules

        The aim of this study was to clarify the anti-inflammatory mechanism of apigenin. Apigenin inhibited the collagenase activity involved in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and suppressed lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in a dose dependent manner in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Pretreatment with apigenin also attenuated LPS-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression. In addition, apigenin profoundly reduced the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced adhesion of monocytes to HUVEC monolayer. Apigenin significantly suppressed the TNF-α-stimulated upregulation of vascular cellular adhesion molecule- 1 (VCAM-1)-, intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1)-, and E-selectin-mRNA to the basal levels. Taken together, these results suggest that apigenin has significant anti-inflammatory activity that involves blocking NO-mediated COX-2 expression and monocyte adherence. These results further suggest that apigenin may be useful for therapeutic management of inflammatory diseases.
