      • The Afterlives of Korean An Chunggŭn in Republican China: From Sinocentric Appropriation to a Rupture in Nationalism

2015 Cross-Currents Vol.- No.17

This article examines Sino-Korean cultural relations in the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on representations of Korean anticolonial activist An Chunggŭn’s assassination of Japanese prime minister Itō Hirobumi (1909). Two different junctures in particular are considered: the release of the film Patriotic Spirit by Chŏng Kitak in 1928 and the Wanbaoshan Incident in 1931. Patriotic Spirit, a transnational dramatization of An’s story, was the first Chinese film directed by a Korean; the Wanbaoshan Incident was a violent conflict between Chinese and Koreans caused by the unofficial “discord-provoking policy” of the Japanese empire. The article tracks changes in Chinese responses to An’s story before and after these two junctures, showing that Patriotic Spirit subtly communicated transnationalism while also catering to the Sinocentric taste of Chinese audiences. It also examines how Chinese print media in 1928 appropriated Patriotic Spirit for nationalist ends. Following the Wanbaoshan Incident, An’s story resurfaced in China. Despite heightened anti-Korean sentiment in China at this time, An avoided Chinese condemnation because the Chinese unwittingly categorized him as Korean yet not Korean. Hence, while An’s story became integrated into Chinese discourse, this study reveals, the sign of An Chunggŭn caused a rupture in the Han/non-Han divide embedded in Republican-era Chinese nationalism.

Taiwanese Writer Zhang Shenqie and Colonial Transnationalism

Vol.0 No.47

Zhang Shenqie (1904-65) was a Taiwanese writer who was educated in Japan and led active political and literary careers in both Taiwan and China-including Guangdong, Shanghai, and Beijing-during the Japanese colonial period. In China, Zhang developed the renaissance movement of classic Chinese tradition as an anticolonial strategy; in Taiwan, he embarked on the New Taiwan Literature Movement articulating uniquely Taiwanese sensibilities distinct from the Chinese. This paper examines the ways in which Zhang engaged his audiences in both colonized Taiwan and semicolonized China, a transnational practice that identifies heterogeneous, counter-Enlightenment notions of the nation obscured by the modern colonial ideology of nationalism. My analysis shows how inter-colonial transnationalism strategically makes use of the nation as a strategy countering colonial nationalism. Although Zhang was versed in both Eastern and Western literature and philosophy, ranging from ancient to modern, he sought not to be bound to any strand of ideology of thought, including anarchism, Marxism, or nationalism. Yet he critically drew on religious insights, especially Daoism, due to Daoism’s anti-institutional and deconstructive worldview, contending that Daoism provides the Chinese with the best means to adapt to the rapidly changing world and thus oppose imperialist strategies employing ever-changing technology and rhetoric. Zhang also urged Taiwanese writers to discern ever-changing Dao within Taiwanese masses’ lives and cater to their demands, even if the masses’ tastes contradict Taiwan New Literature’s pursuit. This paper shows Zhang’s use of Daoism sought transnational reconnection between Taiwan and China yet identified the counter-modern idea of the nation in each country.

Vol.- No.64

This article examines the ways in which semicolonial China in the Republican era situated Korean literature translated into Chinese within its literary discourses. Whereas previous studies have focused on identifying Korean literary texts translated into Chinese, this study investigates how China"s reading public of the time understood Korean literature under the historically specific cultural-political conditions. I examine the intersection of three elements as the determining factors; nationalist criticism of Chinese literati, China"s enthusiastic endorsement of Chang Hyŏkju"s criticism on Korean literature, and world literature discourses. First, the sense of nationalism hegemonic within the Chinese literary discourse led Chinese readers and critics to hold the ambivalent stance of affective identification and political defamiliarization vis-a-vis Korean literary narratives. Second, although China relied on the cultural authority of Chang Hyŏkju, who made a successful debut on a famed Japanese literary magazine, to understand modern Korean literature, Chang had a derogatory view on both Korean literature and Korean nationality. Translation of Chang"s criticism into Chinese less deepens the understanding of Korean literature than echoes ethnonationalism of China"s literary criticism. Finally, Chinese intellectuals, especially Zheng Zhenduo, engaged with the world literature issue, critiqued Euro- or West-centrism underlying the world literature discourse, and reconfigured it into progressive theories of world literature. My analysis shows that the critical reconfiguration of Eurocentric world literature engendered two literary strands. One is a sinocentric strand of world literature that reckons Korean literature as narratives by a small and powerless nation. The other, seen in Hu Feng"s stance, replaces national literature with an individual subject as a constituting unit of world literature. Chinese theories in the latter strand embrace Marxim Gorky"s view of human, viewing a human not as an object of pity and sympathy but as that of affirmation and respect. The latter framework, I argue, transforms the identity of Korean literature from a narrative of the weak to that of übermensch and the strong, radically deconstructing the given hierarchy of national literatures of the time.

      • Anti-inflammatory effects and metabolite analysis of hot water extract of immature sword bean (Canavalia gladiata (Jacq.) DC.) pod in OVA-induced mouse model

        Inhye Jeong,Wen Yan Huang,Sang Hoon Lee,Seong-Ju Oh,Laura Amaya Quiroz,Young-Shick Hong,Bok Kyung Han,Young Jun Kim 한국식품영양과학회 2021 한국식품영양과학회 학술대회발표집 Vol.2021 No.10

Immature sword bean pod (ISBP) has long been known to be effective against bronchial diseases and inflammation. Although research on the mechanism of its efficacy is ongoing, research on plasma metabolites has not been conducted. In this study, the efficacy and metabolite analysis of hot water extract of ISBP were determined in OVA-induced mouse model. The levels of histamine and IgE increased by OVA induction were decreased in a dose-dependent manner by ISBP treatment. Histological analysis confirmed by H&E staining showed that the lung tissue damaged by OVA induction was recovered by ISBP treatment. Compared to the control group, the level of creatine was decreased and that of citrate was increased in the OVA group which indicated creatine may cause dysregulation in blood glucose and inflammation. Moreover, acidification by citrate had progressed and the increased lactate level observed in the dexamethasone and low ISBP groups was assumed to be related to reduced inflammation. Moreover, total lipid level was decreased with ISBP groups. In conclusion, this study confirmed hot water extract of ISBP treatment reduced inflammation and changed responsible metabolites.

One-Dimensional Supramolecular Nanoplatforms for Theranostics Based on Co-Assembly of Peptide Amphiphiles

        Kim, Inhye,Han, Eun Hee,Ryu, Jooyeon,Min, Jin-Young,Ahn, Hyungju,Chung, Young-Ho,Lee, Eunji American Chemical Society 2016 Biomacromolecules Vol.17 No.10

<P>We report a simple and facile strategy for the preparation of multifunctional nanoparticles with programmable properties using self assembly of precisely designed block amphiphiles in an aqueous solution state. Versatile, supramolecular nanoplatform for personalized needs, particularly-theranostics, was fabricated by coassembly of peptide amphiphiles (PAs) in aqueous solution, replacing time-consuming and inaccessible chemical synthesis. Fibrils, driven by the assembly of hydrophobic beta-sheet forming peptide block, were utilized as a nano template for drug loading within their robust core. PAs were tagged with octreotide [somatostatin (SST) analogue] for tumor-targeting or were conjugated with paramagnetic metal ion (Gd3+)-chelating 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The two PA types were coassembled to integrate each PA function into original fibrillar nanotemplates. The adoption of a bulky target-specific cyclic octreotide and beta-sheet-forming peptide with enhanced hydrophobicity led morphological transition from conventional fibrils to helical fibrils. The resulting one-dimensional nanoaggregates allowed the successful intracellular delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) to MCF-7 cancer cells overexpressing SST receptor (SSTR) and MR imaging by enabling high longitudinal (T-1) relaxivity of water protons. Correlation between the structural nature of fibrils formed by PA coassembly and contrast efficacy was elucidated. The coassembly of PAs with desirable functions may thus be a useful strategy for the generation of tailor-made biocompatible nanomaterials.</P>

      • Photo-crosslinkable elastomeric protein-derived supramolecular peptide hydrogel with controlled therapeutic CO-release

        Kim, Inhye,Bang, Woo-Young,Park, Won Ho,Han, Eun Hee,Lee, Eunji The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019 Nanoscale Vol.11 No.37

<P>As an attempt to establish a method for efficient and safe administration of therapeutic carbon monoxide (CO) to the human body, supramolecular nanoplatforms incorporated with CO-releasing molecules (CORMs) have recently been developed. In particular, hydrogel scaffolds have attracted considerable attention due to the possibility of site-specific and controlled liberation of CO. However, it would be greatly beneficial to enhance the mechanical strength of hydrogels to widen their applicability in biomedical, pharmaceutical, and surgical sectors. Herein, we report a visible light-mediated crosslinkable supramolecular CO-releasing hydrogel (CORH), based on the fibrillar assembly of elastomeric protein-derived tyrosine-containing short peptides. A photo-driven dimerization of tyrosine moieties located on the fibrillar surface of CORH, accelerated by a Ru-based catalyst, results in the entanglement and bundling of nanofibrils that significantly increases the mechanical strength and stability of the CORH, which allows prolonged CO-liberation through limiting the contact of CORMs with water molecules. The contact probability of a CORM with water determined by the spatial position of the CORM on the fibrils containing a crosslinkable tyrosine moiety that affects CO-releasing behavior was confirmed by adjusting the CORM position closer to or farther from the tyrosine in the peptide sequence. A bulky CORM closely located to the tyrosine in a peptide inhibited the effective dityrosine formation of tyrosine on the fibril surface, resulting in loose bundling of nanofibrils in the CORH and facilitating the release of CO through the exchange with water. The photo-crosslinked CORH demonstrated a potent cytoprotective effect on oxidatively stressed cardiomyocytes, as expected. This work could provide a useful insight for the practical application of gasotransmitters as functional nanomaterials in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields.</P>

      • Structure-Dependent Antimicrobial Theranostic Functions of Self-Assembled Short Peptide Nanoagents

        Kim, Inhye,Jin, Seon-Mi,Han, Eun Hee,Ko, Eunhee,Ahn, MiJa,Bang, Woo-Young,Bang, Jeong-Kyu,Lee, Eunji American Chemical Society 2017 Biomacromolecules Vol.18 No.11

<P>Gadolinium (Gd[III])-based nanoaggregates are potential noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probes with excellent spatial and temporal resolution for cancer diagnosis. Peptides conjugated with Gd3+ can aid in supramolecular scaffolding for MRI nanoagents because of their inherent biocompatibility and degradability. We report here a strategy to tune the MR relaxivity of tumor cell-targeted nanoagents and enhance the antimicrobial and anticancer activities of nanoagents based on rationally designed antimicrobial peptide (AMP) assembly. A tripeptide with glycyl-<SMALL>l</SMALL>-histidyl-<SMALL>l</SMALL>-lysine (GHK) capable of Gd3+ chelation was attached to short AMPs containing pyrazole amino acids that spontaneously assembled as a function of the number of hydrophobic amino acid residues and the peptide length of AMPs. Aqueous coassembly of GHK with tumor-targeting, cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (cRGD)-tagged AMPs resulted in the formation of micelles, fibrils, vesicles, sheets, and planar networks. Interestingly, the two-dimensional planar network nanostructure showed less antibacterial activity and tumor cell cytotoxicity but greater drug loading/delivery and magnetic resonance signaling than micelles because of its intrinsic structural characteristics. This study can provide a rational approach for the design and fabrication of clinically useful nanoagents.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/bomaf6/2017/bomaf6.2017.18.issue-11/acs.biomac.7b00951/production/images/medium/bm-2017-00951h_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/bm7b00951'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
