Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a biodegradable and biocompatible bioplastic. Effective PHB degradation in nutrient-poor environments is required for industrial and practical applications of PHB. To screen for PHB-degrading strains, PHB double-layer plates were prepared and three new Bacillus infantis species with PHB-degrading ability were isolated from the soil. In addition, phaZ and bdhA of all isolated B. infantis were confirmed using a Bacillus sp. universal primer set and established polymerase chain reaction conditions. To evaluate the effective PHB degradation ability under nutrient-deficient conditions, PHB film degradation was performed in mineral medium, resulting in a PHB degradation rate of 98.71% for B. infantis PD3, which was confirmed in 5 d. Physical changes in the degraded PHB films were analyzed. The decrease in molecular weight due to biodegradation was confirmed using gel permeation chromatography and surface erosion of the PHB film was observed using scanning electron microscopy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on B. infantis showing its excellent PHB degradation ability and is expected to contribute to PHB commercialization and industrial composting.

Since electroencephalogram (EEG) is a very small electrical signal from the brain, it is very vulnerable to external noise ormotion artifact, making it difficult to measure. Therefore, despite the excellent convenience of dry electrodes, wet electrodeshave been used. To solve this problem, self-adhesive and conductive composites using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in adhesivepolydimethylsiloxane (aPDMS), which can have the advantages of both dry and wet electrodes, have been developed bymixing them uniformly with methyl group-terminated PDMS. The CNT/aPDMS composite has a low Young's modulus, penetrates the skin well, has a high contact area, and excellent adhesion and conductivity, so the signal quality is enhanced. As a result of the EEG measurement test, although it was a dry electrode, results comparable to those of a wet electrode wereobtained in terms of impedance and motion noise. It also shows excellent biocompatibility in a human fibroblast cell test anda week-long skin reaction test, so it can measure EEG with high signal quality for a long period of time.

BACKGROUND: The neuregulin 1 (NRG1) gene has been investigated as a candidate susceptibility gene for schizophrenia. A number of studies have also explored the genetic effect of NRG1 on cognitive deficits related to schizophrenia, and thus far generated inconsistent results. The current study aimed to determine whether genetic variations in NRG1 are associated with cognitive domains in schizophrenic patients and healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comprehensive neuropsychological tests composed of six cognitive domains were administered to 135 clinically stable patients with schizophrenia and 119 healthy individuals. On the basis of previous reports of positive association, a total of four single nucleotide polymorphisms were analyzed. In testing the genotype effect on cognitive domains, we used repeated-measure analysis for six cognitive domain scores of each individual as repeated measurements. RESULTS: An association of P-value less than 0.05 with at least one cognitive domain in patients and/or healthy individuals was observed for all of the single nucleotide polymorphisms. After applying the correction for multiple testing, the association remained statistically significant between rs6994992 and general cognitive ability (g) in the patient group and between rs2439272 and the ‘working memory’ domain in the group of healthy participants. CONCLUSION: This study suggests the involvement of NRG1 in the susceptibility for developing cognitive deficits in schizophrenic patients. For some cognitive domains, its genetic effect was also significant in generating interindividual variability within the normal functional range.
