        The purpose of this paper is to improve General Mathematics education programs for engineering students based on an experimental study in the fall semester of 1988. Freshmen classes for General Mathematics course were divided into two groups. One of them, "Special class," was for highly motivated students and the other "Ordinary class," for less motivated students. Both classes had the same basic calculus textbooks. "Special class" students, however, had an extra textbook on elementary linear algebra. Analyzing two examinations and surveys on other university curricula, we concluded that there was no significant difference between two groups. It is suggested that one or two chapters on differential equations and elementary linear algebra should be included in the freshmen general mathematics course.

        A great many students are working for their mathematics learning in secondary schools and nevertheless its learning effect is rather low. This phenomenon is largely due to a biased social recognition. Furthermore the educational environment including big class size and ability differences enlarge such a difficulty. This study aims at seeking an improving device to enhance learning efficiency under the circumstances. Questionaires about problem finding of teachers educational activity and mathematics teaching were distributed and collected. Data were analyzed to establish a desirable mathematics education and teaching. Devices for individualized instruction and learning tasks and evaluation methods were proposed. This recommendations are supposed to be an improving way for students' mathematics learning. In relation to this result, a further study is strongly required and adminstrative supports by government are badly needed to achieve such a goal.

        A practical review of watch-and-wait approach in rectal cancer

        Rectal resection surgery after neoadjuvant treatment has been the mainstay treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer. However, functional outcomes and quality of life after radical resection of the rectum remain suboptimal. The excellent oncologic outcomes in patients who achieved pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant treatment questioned the need for radical surgery. The watch-and-wait approach is a noninvasive therapeutic alternative for organ preservation and avoiding operative morbidity. In the watch-and-wait approach, patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who achieve excellent clinical response after neoadjuvant treatment undergo active surveillance rather than rectal cancer surgery. In this practical review, we summarized the main results of studies on the watch-and-wait approach and provided a practical method for implementing the watch-and-wait approach.

        Factors associated with pulmonary toxicity after myeloablative conditioning using fractionated total body irradiation

        Purpose: Pulmonary toxicities, including infectious pneumonia (IP) and idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS), are serious side effects of total body irradiation (TBI) used for myeloablative conditioning. This study aimed to evaluate clinical factors associated with IP and IPS following TBI. Materials and Methods: Fifty-eight patients with hematologic malignancies who underwent TBI before allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation between 2005 and 2014 were reviewed. Most patients (91%) received 12 Gy in 1.5 Gy fractions twice a day. Pulmonary toxicities were diagnosed based on either radiographic evidence or reduced pulmonary function, and were subdivided into IP and IPS based on the presence or absence of concurrent infection. Results: Pulmonary toxicities developed in 36 patients (62%); 16 (28%) had IP and 20 (34%) had IPS. IP was significantly associated with increased treatment-related mortality (p = 0.028) and decreased survival (p = 0.039). Multivariate analysis revealed that the risk of developing IPS was significantly higher in patients who received stem cells from a matched unrelated donor than from a matched sibling donor (p = 0.021; hazard ratio [HR] = 12.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46-110.30). Combining other conditioning agents with cyclophosphamide produced a higher tendency to develop IP (p = 0.064; HR = 6.19; 95% CI, 0.90-42.56). Conclusion: IP and IPS involve different risk factors and distinct pathogeneses that should be considered when planning treatments before and after TBI.

        Carbon ion radiotherapy in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

        Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly lethal cancer with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has emerged as a promising treatment modality for HCC due to its unique physical and biological properties. CIRT uses carbon ions to target and destroy cancer cells with a high precision and efficacy. The Bragg Peak phenomenon allows precise dose delivery to the tumor while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. In addition, the high relative biological effectiveness of carbon ions can be shown against radioresistant and hypoxic tumor areas. CIRT also offers a shorter treatment schedule than conventional radiotherapy, which increases patient convenience and compliance. The clinical outcomes of CIRT for HCC have shown excellent local control rates with minimal side effects. Considering its physical and biological properties, CIRT may be a viable option for complex clinical scenarios such as patients with poor liver function, large tumors, re-irradiation cases, and tumors close to critical organs. Further research and larger studies are needed to establish definitive indications for CIRT and to compare its efficacy with that of other treatment modalities. Nevertheless, CIRT offers a potential breakthrough in HCC management, providing hope for improved therapeutic outcomes and reduced treatment-related toxicities.

      • Clinical and genetic characteristics of BRCA1/2 mutation in Korean ovarian cancer patients: A multicenter study and literature review

        Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate the clinical relevance and spectrum of BRCA1/2 mutations in Korean ovarian cancer (KoOC) patients. Methods: Two hundred seventy-nine KoOC patients were enrolled from three university hospitals between 2012 and 2017. Their peripheral blood samples were obtained for BRCA1/2 mutation analysis by direct sequencing. Clinicopathological characteristics were retrospectively reviewed, and spectrum analyses of BRCA1/2 mutation were assessed by systematic literature review. Results: Frequency of BRCA1/2 mutations was 16.5% in KoOC patients. BRCA1/2 mutations were significantly associated with family history of breast/ovarian cancer (p < 0.001), serous histology (p=0.044) and advanced FIGO stage (III/IV, p=0.018) but not with early age-of-onset (age < 50, p=0.729). A literature review of BRCA1/2 mutations in KoOC patients found 111 (55 distinct) mutations. The proportion of Korean-specific mutations (24/55 distinct, 43.6%) was high. Comparing the spectrum of BRCA1/2 mutation between KoOC and Korean breast cancer (KoBC) patients, the ratio of BRCA1-to-BRCA2 mutations was different, with BRCA1 (78.4%) being predominant in KoOC and BRCA2 being predominant in KoBC (59.2%). The most common mutation also differed between the two (c.3627insA of BRCA1 in KoOC and c.7480C >T of BRCA2 in KoBC). Conclusion: The clinical relevance of BRCA1/2 mutations in KoOC patients was confirmed but that of early age-of-onset was not. Inconsistency in the ratio of BRCA1-to-BRCA2 mutations and the most common mutation between KoOC and KoBC may suggest possible presence of mutation sequence-associated penetrance tendency in hereditary KoBOC. These data may provide insights for optimal genetic counseling and prophylactic treatment for at-risk relatives of KoOC patients.         이매방 살풀이춤의 ‘여형화(女形化)’에 대한 논의

        우리는 이매방의 춤을 이야기할 때 ‘아름답다’, ‘교태적이다’, ‘농염하다’라고 표현한다. 이러한 수사(修辭)는 그의 춤이 다분히 여성적인 속성을 갖고 있기 때문에 붙여진 것이다. 본 연구는 이매방의 살풀이춤이 여형화의 양식체계로 구축되어 있음을 논의하였다. 춤에서 ‘여형화’란 남성이 여성의 모습으로 춤을 추는 형식, 혹은 양식이라고 할수 있다. 이매방의 춤은 다음과 같은 여형화의 특성을 보인다. 첫째, 이매방의 살풀이춤은 경극의 ‘화단’이나 가부키의 ‘게이세이’와 같이 화려하고 교태스런 배역 특성을 보인다. 둘째, 살풀이춤의 복식은 남성과 여성의 구분을 두고 있으되 상당히 장식적인 여성성을 지향하고 있다. 셋째, 이매방의 양성 지향적인 성 정체성은 탐미적인 미의식으로 확장되어 여형화 된 춤 양식 체계로 환원되었다. 넷째, 이매방 살풀이춤의 기법은 가공된 여성의 신체상을 기반으로 구축되었다. 즉, 응축된 근육의 밀도 높은 작용을 통해 신체를 ‘축소’하거나 ‘왜곡’하여 관능적이고 요염한 여성성을 신체상으로 구현하여 춤에 반영하였다. 이상으로 미루어 이매방 살풀이춤은 남성이 추는 여성의 춤, 혹은 기방춤을 전형 특성의 하나로 구축하고 있다고 하겠다. When we talk about Lee Mae-bang's Salpul-i chum, we use the expressions ‘beautiful’, ‘exciting’, and ‘congested’. This knowledge was attached because his dance has a feminine attribute. This study discussed that Lee Mae-bang's Salpul-i chum is constructed as Yeohyeonghwa's aquaculture system. First, Lee Mae-bang's Salpul-i chum exhibits gorgeous and cunning character, such as Peking Opera's 'Huā dàn' or Kabuki's 'Keisei'. In dance[chum], ‘Yeohyeonghwa’ can be said to be a form or style in which men dance in the form of women. Lee Mae-bang's dance shows the following characteristics of Yeohyeonghwa. Second, Salpul-i chum's costumes differentiate between men and women, but aim for a highly decorative femininity. Third, Lee Mae-bang's bisexual sexual identity has been stylized into a feminine attitude through aesthetic pursuit. Fourth, Lee Mae-bang Salpul-i chum's technique expresses the processed female body image. In other words, Salpul-i chum expresses the body of a sensual and fascinating woman by 'shrinking' or 'distorting' the body through the dense action of condensed muscles. In this regard, Lee Mae-bang is said to be constructing a male dance or gibangchum as one of the characteristics of Jeonhyeong[original form].
