        Cholesteryl naphthalimide-based gelators: Their applications in the multiply visual sensing of CO<sub>2</sub> based on an anion-induced strategy

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Several cholesteryl naphthalimide-derived compounds have been sythesized and developed as CO<SUB>2</SUB> sensors. The derivatives, incorporating ether chains, were found to be capable of gelating various organic solvents, due to the modulation of the hydrophilicity/hydrophobility properties of them. The resulting organogels were well characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), FT-IR spectroscopy, concentration- and temperature-dependent <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR spectra, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). These gelators can be applied as fluorescent sensors for CO<SUB>2</SUB> in DMSO solutions via the anion-triggered strategy. Furthermore, the resulting organogelation systems in DMSO could also provide visual sensing means for CO<SUB>2</SUB> via the reversible solution-to-gel transition. Particularly, the re-gelation of DMSO induced by CO<SUB>2</SUB> bubbling could be directly observed without the aid of the heating-and-cooling operation. And the reversible sensing process could be repeated several times with the excellent chemical stability of the gelation system after the repeated stimuli of fluoride anion, CO<SUB>2</SUB> and N<SUB>2</SUB> with heating.         The Soft Material Obtained from an Europium (III)-Containing Ionic Liquid

        The addition of organic ligand (β-diketone or heterocyclic compound) to the europium (III)-containing ionic liquid resulted in bright luminescent soft materials with the molar ratio of europium/ionic liquid (IL)/ligand being 1:3:1 that exhibit bright red light under UV lamp. The luminescent properties such as emission features and lifetime of ^(5)D_0 Eu^(3+) excited level are dependent on the organic ligands. The materials were characterized by FT-IR and luminescence spectroscopy. The data shows that at least parts of the ILs (carboxylic acid) are replaced with β-diketone ligand rather than the formation of europium complex with the molar ratio of Eu^(3+):IL: ligand being 1:3:1, while no ILs could be replaced by the heterocyclic ligand such as Bpy and Phen.

        Beyond Canonical PROTAC: Biological targeted protein degradation (bioTPD)

        Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an emerging therapeutic strategy with the potential to modulate disease associated proteins that have previously been considered undruggable, by employing the host destructionmachinery. The exploration and discovery of cellular degradation pathways, including but not limited toproteasomes and lysosome pathways as well as their degraders, is an area of active research. Since the conceptof proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) was introduced in 2001, the paradigm of TPD has been greatlyexpanded and moved from academia to industry for clinical translation, with small-molecule TPD being particularlyrepresented. As an indispensable part of TPD, biological TPD (bioTPD) technologies including peptide-, fusionprotein-, antibody-, nucleic acid-based bioTPD and others have also emerged and undergone significantadvancement in recent years, demonstrating unique and promising activities beyond those of conventional small molecule TPD. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in bioTPD technologies, summarize theircompositional features and potential applications, and briefly discuss their drawbacks. Moreover, we present somestrategies to improve the delivery efficacy of bioTPD, addressing their challenges in further clinical development.

        Pharmacokinetics and Biodistribution of Surface Modification Polymeric Nanoparticles

        The objective of this study is to investigate the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of free breviscapine (BVP) and coated BVP-loaded poly (D, L-lactic acid) nanoparticles (BVP-PLA-NPs) in rats after i.v. administration. Coated BVP-PLA-NPs were prepared by the spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method and characterized. The BVP content in the NPs, the biological samples and in vitro release was measured by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The mean sizes of coated BVP-PLA-NPs were 177 and 319 nm with a narrow distribution and smooth sphere shapes, entrapment efficiency of 86.9% and 93.1%, respectively. Drug release profiles in phosphate buffer and plasma exhibited a biphasic release phenomenon. After i.v. administration of free BVP and NPs suspensions in rats, area under plasma concentration-time curve and elimination $t_{1/2}$ were increased 9.3-fold and 10.9-fold for 177 nm of NPs, and 4.4-fold and 17.1-fold for 319 nm of NPs compared with that of free BVP, respectively. NPs were mainly distributed in liver, spleen, heart and brain. In addition, NPs could penetrate blood brain barrier (BBB) and the particle size had some effect on pharmacokinetics and biodistribution. Coated BVP-PLA-NPs could effectively avoid the capture by the reticuloendothelial system and prolong the half-life of BVP. Moreover, these NPs could penetrate BBB and enhance the accumulation of BVP in brain.

      • Claiming the Lost Homeland: A Study of the Intertextuality Between Marilyn Chin’s Poetry and Classical Chinese Poems

        Through a detailed study of the intertextuality between the poems of Chinese American poetess Marilyn Chin and Chinese classical poetry, this paper aims to interpret the significance of Chin’s borrowing from, parodying of, and/or echoing Chinese classical poetry—namely, whether she attempts to return to the Chinese literary tradition or simply appropriates Chinese cultural codes to promote her ethnic identity. Are her works in accordance with or against the Chinese American literary tradition? The paper points out that the bilingual intertextuality practiced by Chinese American poets is not only influenced by the literary and cultural tradition of the motherland and the adopted land, but also by their personal choices, which is determined by the identity politics of American ethnic minorities.

      • A GPU-based Parallel Ant Colony Algorithm for Scientific Workflow Scheduling

        Scientific workflow scheduling problem is a combinatorial optimization problem. In the real application, the scientific workflow generally has thousands of task nodes. Scheduling large-scale workflow has huge computational overhead. In this paper, a parallel algorithm for scientific workflow scheduling is proposed so that the computing speed can be improved greatly. Our method used ant colony optimization approaches on the GPU. Thousands of GPU threads can parallel construct solutions. The parallel ant colony algorithm for workflow scheduling was implemented with CUDA C language. Scheduling problem instances with different scales were tested both in our parallel algorithm and CPU sequential algorithm. The experimental results on NVIDIA Tesla M2070 GPU show that our implementation for 1000 task nodes runs in 5 seconds, while a conventional sequential algorithm implementation runs in 104 seconds on Intel Xeon X5650 CPU. Thus, our GPU-based parallel algorithm implementation attains a speed-up factor of 20.7.

        N-Acyl-Homoserine Lactone Quorum Sensing Switch from Acidogenesis to Solventogenesis during the Fermentation Process in Serratia marcescens MG1

        N-acyl-homoserine lactone quorum sensing (AHL-QS) has been shown to regulate many physiological behaviors in Serratia marcescens MG1. In the current study, the effects of AHL-QS on the biosynthesis of acid and neutral products by S. marcescens MG1 and its isogenic ΔswrI with or without supplementing exogenous N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C<sub>6</sub>-HSL) were systematically investigated. The results showed that swrI disruption resulted in rapid pH drops from 7.0 to 4.8, which could be restored to wild type by supplementing C<sub>6</sub>-HSL. Furthermore, fermentation product analysis indicated that ΔswrI could lead to obvious accumulation for acidogenesis products such as lactic acid and succinic acid, especially excess acetic acid (2.27 g/l) produced at the early stage of fermentation, whereas solventogenesis products by ΔswrI appeared to noticeably decrease by an approximate 30% for acetoin during 32-48 h and by an approximate 20% for 2,3-butanediol during 24-40 h, when compared to those by wild type. Interestingly, the excess acetic acid produced could be removed in an AHL-QS-independent manner. Subsequently, quantitative real-time PCR was used to determine the mRNA expression levels of genes responsible for acidogenesis and solventogenesis and showed consistent results with those of product synthesis. Finally, by close examination of promoter regions of the analyzed genes, four putative luxI box-like motifs were found upstream of genes encoding acetyl-CoA synthase, lactate dehydrogenase, α-acetolactate decarboxylase, and Lys-like regulator. The information from this study provides a novel insight into the roles played by AHL-QS in switching from acidogenesis to solventogenesis in S. marcescens MG1.
