This paper presents the tensile behavior of the stud connection between reinforced concrete(RC) and steel members. Hanger reinforcements are placed around the studs to transfer the tensile loads to the opposite side of the concrete member. Six specimens, of which variables were arrangement details of hanger reinforcements and studs. Tensile test results show that hanger reinforcements are effective to increase tensile strength and ductility. Test tensile strengths of specimens are compared with the nominal strengths by ACI codes(ACI 318-02, ACI 349-99) and PCI 1999.

        정종헌,원휘준,최왕규,김계남,이성호,오원진 한국공업화학회 2003 응용화학 Vol.7 No.1

Liquid wastes containing uranium ions in high concentration of chemical salts havebeen treated by electrosorption on a activated carbon fibers(ACFs) electrode. Effectiveuranium (VI) removal is accomplished when the potential is -0.5V(vs. Ag/AgCl) ormore negative. For a feed concentration of 100mg/1, the concentration of U(VI) in thecell effluent is reduced to less than 1mg/1, and electrosorption capacity over 500mg/uranium/gACF is reached. The adsorbed uranium can be desorbed up to 99%for 20h by passing a 1.9N NaCl solution at pH 3 through the cell and applying a potential of +1.2V. The amount of desorbed uranium increased as the solution pHwas lowered and the applied potential increased.

      • Flexible deep brain neural probe for localized stimulation and detection with metal guide

        Kim, Jeong Hun,Lee, Geon Hui,Kim, Seohyeon,Chung, Hyo Won,Lee, Joong Hoon,Lee, Seung Min,Kang, Chong Yun,Lee, Sang-Hoon Elsevier 2018 Biosensors & bioelectronics Vol.117 No.-

Abstract

In this paper, we present the design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of a polyimide-based flexible neural probe for the precise site stimulation and recording in the deep brain. The probe consists of five electrodes: one for stimulation, another for ground and the other three for recording electrodes. This probe is designed to be foldable, enabling easy insertion into the deep brain via temporary tungsten guide sticks. Because of its small cross-sectional area and the flexibility of the polyimide, the probe causes minimum damage to the neural tissue and does not show any evidence of serious immune reactions such as high density of macrophage or microglia. Around the simulation electrodes, an additional ground electrode prevents the stimulation of the undesired sites in the brain. To ensure we stimulate the target point specifically, for instance STh in this study, we confirm through both finite element analyses and in vitro tests. With the additional ground electrodes, we observe the leakage power decreased by about 80%. To check the performance of the probe, we demonstrate animal experiments using rats, and neural spike signals from STh in the 7-mm deep brain are successfully recorded after implantation.

Highlights

Development of a flexible probe capable of limited stimulation and measurement in the deep brain.

Easily reach the flexible probe to the desired position through the tungsten guide.

Limited range of stimulation using ring-shaped ground electrode.

Cancer of the stomach is responsible for approximately 650,000 deaths globally each year and is probably second only to lung cancer worldwide as an overall cause of cancer-related mortality. Similar to the situation with most adenocarcinomas of the gastointestinal tract, carcinomas of the stomach can spread by local extension to adjacent normal structures and can develop lymphatic, peritoneal, and distant metastases. The tumor cells, can also permeate diffusely into the lymphatic plexus of the bowel, more often at the level of the upper duodenum hut sometimes down into the distal ileum and the large bowel. We report a case of lymphatic metastasis of gastric adenocarcinoma to the ampulla of Vater with review of the literature.

Ripe fruit of Rubus coreanus inhibits mast cell-mediated allergic inflammation.

        Kim, Hui-Hun,Choi, Phil Hyung,Yoo, Jin-Su,Jeon, Hoon,Chae, Byeong-Suk,Park, Jeong-Suk,Kim, Sang-Hyun,Shin, Tae-Yong D.A. Spandidos 2012 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR MEDICINE Vol.29 No.2

In this study, we investigated the effect of a water extract of the ripe fruits of Rubus coreanus Miq. (Rosaceae) (RFRC) on mast cell-mediated allergic inflammation and studied the possible mechanism of action. Mast cell-mediated allergic disease is involved in many diseases such as anaphylaxis, rhinitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis. RFRC dose-dependently inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis and serum histamine release in mice. RFRC reduced the immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated local allergic reaction, passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. RFRC attenuated histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells and human mast cells by the reduction of intracellular calcium. RFRC decreased the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and the calcium ionophore A23187 (PMACI)-stimulated expression and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in human mast cells. The inhibitory effect of RFRC on cytokine production was nuclear factor (NF)-κB- and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-dependent. In addition, RFRC suppressed the activation of caspase-1. Our findings provide evidence that RFRC inhibits mast cell-derived allergic inflammatory reactions, and for the involvement of calcium, NF-κB, MAPKs and caspase-1 in these effects. Furthermore, in vivo and in vitro anti-allergic inflammatory effects of RFRC provide affirmative proof of a possible therapeutic application of this agent in allergic inflammatory diseases.

      • Inhibitory effects of Diospyros kaki in a model of allergic inflammation: Role of cAMP, calcium and nuclear factor-κB

        KIM, HUI-HUN,KIM, DUK-SIL,KIM, SUNG-WAN,LIM, SE-HYUN,KIM, DAE KEUN,SHIN, TAE-YONG,KIM, SANG-HYUN Spandidos Publications 2013 International journal of molecular medicine Vol.32 No.4

Diospyros kaki (D. kaki) has been cultivated throughout Eastern Asia for hundreds of years. D. kaki contains various biological active compounds, such as amino acids, carotenoids, ?avonoids, tannins, catechins and vitamin A. Previous studies have shown that D. kaki has beneficial effects on homeostasis, constipation, hypertension, atherosclerosis and allergic dermatitis and is a good source of antioxidants, polyphenols and dietary ?ber. However, the anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects of D. kaki have not yet been elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of the aqueous extract of Diospyros kaki (AEDK) on mast cell-mediated allergic inflammation and to determine its possible mechanisms of action by using in vitro and in vivo mast cell-based models. The cAMP and intracellular calcium levels were measured to clarify the mechanisms by which AEDK inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells. AEDK inhibited the release of histamine and β-hexosaminidase from mast cells by modulating cAMP and intracellular calcium levels. We also measured the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β. AEDK decreased gene expression and the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-1β by inhibiting nuclear factor-κB. In addition, AEDK inhibited systemic and cutaneous allergic reaction. The inhibitory effects of AEDK on allergic reaction and the release of histamine were found to be similar to those of disodium cromoglycate, a known anti-allergic drug. To isolate the active component of AEDK, activity-guided fractionation was performed, based on the inhibitory effects on systemic anaphylaxis. Catechin was identified as an active compound. The present findings provide evidence that AEDK inhibits allergic inflammation and suggest the therapeutic application of AEDK in allergic inflammatory disorders.

Three reviewers evaluated technical success on angiography, unenhanced cone-beam CT, contrast-enhanced cone-beam CT, and cone-beam CT–based liver perfusion mapping after transarterial chemoembolization per tumor and per patient. Parenchymal blood volume (PBV) was measured. Treatment response was determined on follow-up CT, MR imaging, or histopathology according to modified Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors. Diagnostic performance for detection of a viable tumor was evaluated using multiple logistic regression with C-statistics.

Results

Treatment response was 38, 17, 2, and 0 for complete response, partial response, stable disease, and progressive disease per tumor and 18, 15, 2, and 0 per patient. In multiple logistic regression, unenhanced cone-beam CT, contrast-enhanced cone-beam CT, cone-beam CT–based liver perfusion mapping, mean value of PBV, and maximum value of PBV of tumor were significant in response assessment for per tumor and per patient (per tumor, all P < .001; per patient, P = .015, P = .001, P < .001, P = .020, and P = .032). Mean value of PBV of tumor was excellent for evaluating technical success with the highest C-statistic (0.880 and 0.920 for per tumor and per patient), followed by that of visual assessment of cone-beam CT–based liver perfusion mapping (0.864 and 0.908).

Conclusions

Cone-beam CT–based liver perfusion mapping provided reliable images to evaluate technical success after transarterial chemoembolization of HCC by qualitative visual assessment and quantitative perfusion values.

      • Inhibitory effect of putranjivain A on allergic inflammation through suppression of mast cell activation

( Hui Hun Kim ),( Seung Bin Park ),( Soyoung Lee ),( Taeg Kyu Kwon ),( Tae Yong Shin ),( Pil Hoon Park ),( Seung Ho Lee ),( Sang Hyun Kim ) 영남대학교 약품개발연구소 2014 영남대학교 약품개발연구소 연구업적집 Vol.24 No.0

A great number of people are suffering from allergic inflammatory disease such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and sinusitis. Therefore discovery of drugs for the treatment of these diseases is an important subject in human health. Putranjivain A (PJA), member of ellagitannin, is known to possess beneficial effects including anti-cancer and anti-viral activities. The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether PJA modulates the allergic inflammatory reaction and to study its possible mechanisms of action using mast cell-based in vitro and in vivo models. The study was performed in anaphylaxis mouse model and cultured mast cells. PJA inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in immunoglobulin E-stimulated mast cells. PJA reduced this expression by inhibiting nuclear factor (NF)-κB and nuclear factor of activated T cell. The oral administration of PJA reduced systemic and cutaneous anaphylaxis, the release of serum histamine, and the expression of the histamine H1 receptor. In addition, PJA attenuated the activation of mast cells. PJA inhibited the release of histamine from various types of mast cells by the suppression of intracellular calcium. The inhibitory activity of PJA on the allergic reaction was similar to that of disodium cromoglycate, a known anti-allergic drug. These results suggest that PJA can facilitate the prevention or treatment of allergic inflammatory diseases mediated by mast cells. ⓒ2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
