        A study was planned to see if administration of ginseng extract has any influence upon the nucleic acid content of the mandibular gland of rats, and to estimate the effect of ACTH administration upon the nucleic acid content of rats previously primed with ginseng. Ninety male rats (body weight: 150-200 gm) were divided into the ginseng, the saline, and the normal groups, which received for 5 days 0.5 ml /100 gm body weight of ginseng extract solution (4 mg of ginseng alcohol extract in 1 ml of saline), same amount of saline, or no medication, respectively. On the 5th experimental day, each of the 3 groups was further divided into 2 subgroups yielding the ginseng, the ginseng-ACTH, the saline, the saline?ACTH, the normal, and the normal-ACTH subgroups. The ginseng, the saline, and the normal subgroups were sacrificed 2 hours after the last medication, while the ginseng-ACTH, the saline-ACTH, and the normal-ACTH subgroups received ACTH (0.1 unit/subject) 1 hour after the last medication and were sacrificed after 1 more hour. The mandibular gland was measured for RNA and DNA contents using the chemical method of Schmidt-Thanhauser-Schneider. Following results were obtained 1. RNA content of the mandibular gland and RNA/DNA ratio were significantly higher in the ginseng group than they were in the normal and the saline groups. The DNA content was significantly reduced in the ginseng group. 2. Administration of ACTH reduced nucleic acid contents of the mandibular gland. In the ginseng group the rate of decrease ((value of ginseng-ACTH subgroup-value of ginseng subgroup) X 100/value of ginseng subgroup) in RNA and RNA/DNA ratio were more conspicuous than they were in the normal and the saline groups. The rate of decrease in DNA after ACI'II was less conspicuous in the ginseng group. Thus under the influence of ginseng the mandibular glandular RNA content and RNA/DNA ratio increased significantly and DNA content decreased conspicuously while under additional influence of ACTH the rate of decrease was conspicuous in RNA content and RNA/DNA ratio but it was less so in DNA content.

        슬림 프리캐스트 슬래브 데크를 사용한 I-슬래브 시스템의 전단 성능에 관한 실험적 연구

        본 연구는 원형 천공된 플랫 형태와 팔각형 형태의 중공을 가지는 슬래브의 전단강도를 평가하고 있다. 최근 건축구조물에서 슬래 브 두께에 대한 증가와 품질관리에서 요구되는 수준이 상향됨에 따라 프리캐스트 중공 슬래브 시스템에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 중공 슬래 브 시스템은 널리 알려진 바와 같이 슬래브의 자중을 감소시킬 수 있는 효율적인 바닥시스템이다. 하지만 중공슬래브는 전단에 저항하는 슬래 브 웨브의 콘크리트 면적 감소로 전단강도 성능이 저하될 수 있다. 특히, 프리캐스트 중공슬래브는 PC 슬래브 데크의 접합면이 발생하며, 접합 면의 균열로 인한 전단파괴가 일어나지 않도록 방지하여야 한다. 본 연구에서는 I-슬래브 시스템의 전단강도를 평가하기 위하여 3점 가력에 의 한 주축 및 직교축에 대한 전단 실험을 실시하였다. 실험결과 I-슬래브가 PC 접합면이 포함되어짐에도 불구하고 이론강도에 대하여 충분한 전 단강도 성능을 보유하는 것으로 나타났다. This paper presents the shear capacities of hollow slab with plate and octagonal pillar type hollow sphere. Recently, the interest in precast hollow slab system for buildings is growing up according to the demand for high quality control and the increase in slab thickness. A hollow slab system is widely known as one of the effective slab system which can reduce self-weight of slab. However, hollow slabs are vulnerable to the deterioration in the shear strength due to the decrease of concrete at slab web which resists shear. Especially, in case of precast hollow slabs, it has joint surface between precast concrete slab modules along transverse axis of slab, and shear failure, that is caused by cracks at joints, has to be prevented. Therefore, in this study, shear capacity of the I-slab system is evaluated by 3-points-supported shear test along the longitudinal and transverse axis of slab specimen. Test results showed that I-slab had enough shear strength compared to theoretical shear strength even if it included the joint surfaces.

        PerFixR Plug을 이용한 무긴장 탈장 교정술의 단기 성적 보고

        Purpose: The PerFixⓇ plug is preformed as a Marlex mesh hernia plug, and consists of a fluted outer layer combined with an inner arrangement of eight mesh "petals." In contrast to hand-rolled hernia plugs, which can collapse on themselves, the PerFixⓇ plug's petals maintain the device's open conelike shape. The fluted design allows the plug to more readily conform to the configuration of any indirect or direct defect. Methods: Bewteen January 1996 and April 2000 126 conventional herniorrhaphies (C group: Bassini: 23, Shouldice: 15, McVay: 5, Lichtenstein: 83) were performed, and between May 2000 and April 2002, 124 PerFixⓇ plug repairs (P group) were completed. The operation times, lengths of hospital stay, visual analogue pain scales, time of analgesics use, and complication and recurrence rates were compared between these two groups. Results: The operation times and lengths of hospital stay for groups C and P were 56.4 vs. 31.1 minutes and 4.4 vs. 2.8 days, respectively, so where significantly shorter in the P group (P<0.01). The times of use for the analgesics, AAP and Nubaine, were 6.6 vs. 0.6 times and 1.7 vs. 0.9 times, in group C and P, respectively, so were significantly fewer in the P group (P<0.01). There were 5 recurrences (3.9%) in the C group during the follow up period (2~6 years), but there were none in the P group during the follow up period (5 months~2 years). The complications were similar in both groups. Conclusion: Compared with conventional surgical techniques, including the Lichtenstein tension free method, the PerFixⓇ plug method is the most simple, and shows superiority in the following areas; the operation time, length of hospital stay, times of analgesics use and recurrence. However, with regard to the recurrence, longer follow up and observation periods are required. (J Korean Surg Soc 2003;64:429-433)

        Optimally Fabricated Chitosan Particles Containing Ovalbumin Induced Cellular and Humoral Immunity in Immunized Mice

        Subunit vaccines have been developed as promising vaccines with safety. However, subunit vaccines have difficulties in commercialization due to low efficiencies of delivery and immune response. As a result, studies of adjuvants that improve the immune-inducing ability of vaccines have been conducted globally. Aluminum salts (alum) have been extensively used as vaccine adjuvants, but they cannot induce potent cellular immunity. In this study, chitosan particles were fabricated by the precipitationcoacervation method on four different conditions. Ovalbumin (OVA), as a model antigen, was encapsulated in chitosan particles. The optimized fabrication conditions of chitosan particles were 8 mL/min drop rate of sodium sulfate and 0.5 mg/mL chitosan concentration in a sonication bath. Properties of the optimized chitosan particle were about 300 nm diameter, 0.1 polydispersity index, 16.2 mV zeta potential, and 90% loading efficiency. Chitosan particlecontaining OVA showed 76% uptake efficiency by mouse macrophage cells and suitable cell viability. Immunization of mice by chitosan particles exhibited IgG1 titer and Interleukin-4 production of a similar level with the alum. Moreover, chitosan particles showed significantly enhanced IgG2 titer and Interferon-gamma production related to Th1-mediated cellular immune response. These results indicated that chitosan particles could be expected to be a promising adjuvant inducing cellular and humoral immunity for subunit vaccine delivery.
