        Prolactin Inhibits BCL6 Expression in Breast Cancer Cells through a MicroRNA-339-5p-Dependent Pathway

        Purpose: Prolactin (PRL) plays a critical role in breast cancer progression by activating its cognate receptor and promotes the growth and differentiation of breast cancer cells. Studies have shown that B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6) is the target gene of microRNA- 339-5p (miR-339-5p) and that BCL6 expression contributes to breast cancer progression. Herein, we identified PRL as a potent suppressor of BCL6 expression in human breast cancer cells. Methods: Western blotting and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were used to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying miR-339-5p expression and BCL6 manipulation in MCF-7, T47D, and SKBR3 breast cancer cells. Phenotypic changes in these breast cancer cell lines were assessed by performing cell viability (MTT), colony formation, migration, and invasion assays. Results: PRL suppressed BCL6 protein and mRNA expression and upregulated miR-339-5p expression in MCF-7 and T47D breast cancer cells. Selective downregulation of miR-339-5p expression significantly reversed PRL-induced suppression of BCL6 mRNA and protein expression. Exogenous PRL stimulation significantly decreased the proliferation, colony formation, migration, and invasion of breast cancer cells, and suppression of miR-339-5p expression reversed these processes in vitro. Conclusion: These results indicated that PRL inhibited BCL6 expression and regulated breast cancer progression through a miR-339-5p-dependent pathway.

        A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study of the Gibbs-Tolman-Koening-Buff Equation

        The applicability of the Gibbs-Tolman-Koening-Buff (GTKB) equation has been a concern. A scheme is designed to test the GTKB equation. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for argon liquid of different systems containing different numbers of atoms with a Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential at a temperature of 78 K. The Tolman length and the surface tension are calculated. Based on the analysis, we conclude the GTKB equation is tenable for R s > 8.

        APC‐EDFA‐based scintillation‐suppressed photodetection in satellite optical communication

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This article proposes automatic power control (APC)‐erbium‐doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)‐based scintillation‐suppressed photodetection in satellite optical communication (SOC). It is mainly based on the dynamic gain characteristic of APC‐EDFA. In order to improve the performance, high pass filter (HPF) and Manchester on‐off‐keying (M‐OOK) are introduced as supplemental methods. The proposed scheme is evaluated experimentally under various turbulence channel strengths. The experimental results show that the scintillation effect is suppressed using APC‐EDFA with pump power reduction compared to gain saturation, and an approximate 5.83 dB signal‐to‐noise ratio improvement is obtained compared to adaptive threshold decision with instantaneous turbulence channel state information under a scintillation index of 0.2990.</P>

        Concurrence of ovarian cancer and dermatomyositis: a propensity score analysis

        Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics, prognosis and parallel clinical course ofovarian cancer (OC) and dermatomyositis (DM). Methods: The medical records of 23 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with OC andDM and were treated at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) between 2002and 2017 were reviewed. Propensity score matching method was used to match controlgroup (OC patients without DM) at a ratio of 1:5. The correlation between OC and DM wasmeasured using the Pearson correlation scatter plot and Pearson's r. Kaplan-Meier survivalanalysis and Cox proportional hazard regression analysis were performed to evaluate theprognostic factors. Results: After matching, 23 patients who have the concurrence of OC and DM (DM group)and 115 patients diagnosed with OC alone (No DM group) were included. The 5-year overallsurvival rates (71.6% vs. 51.8%, p=0.020) and 5-year progression-free survival (30.5% vs. 0%, p=0.018) were poorer in DM group. Correlation between serum cancer antigen 125 (CA125) and creatine kinase (CK) level was observed in 12 patients. The time between OC andDM diagnosis is significant through univariable analysis (p=0.021) but not in multivariableanalysis in patients who have the concurrence of OC and DM. Conclusion: The concurrence of OC and DM as a paraneoplastic syndrome is rare and has apoor prognosis. The risk for patients diagnosed with DM is highest within 3 years before orafter OC diagnosis. A correlation and a parallel clinical course exist between these 2 diseases.

        Research on Fractional Order Fuzzy PID Control of the Pneumatic-hydraulic Upper Limb Rehabilitation Training System Based on PSO

        In this paper, a new type of pneumatic-hydraulic upper limb rehabilitation training system is designed, and the system modeling and control method are studied. The 2DOF fuzzy fractional PID controller is proposed, which provides a new reference for improving the control accuracy of two degrees of freedom pneumatic system. Due to the increase of the regulating parameters of the fractional order controller, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm is designed to determine the parameters of the control system and optimize the determination process of the parameters. In order to verify the effectiveness of the control method, an experimental study was carried out by building a pneumatic-hydraulic upper limb rehabilitation training system platform. Compared with PID controller, the overshoot of the system controlled by fractional order fuzzy PID controller is reduced by 17.3%. The peak time is shortened about 11.7%, and the delay time of sine tracking signal is reduced about 10.6%. The results show that the control performance of two degrees of freedom fractional order fuzzy PID controller is better than other controllers.

        Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Properties of Two 3D CdII and ZnII Complexes with a 3-Fold Interpenetrating Feature

        Two new 3D coordination complexes [Cd(3-bpcd)(pht)] (1) and [Zn(3-bpcd)(pht)] (2) [3-bpcd = N,N'-bis(pyridin- 3-yl)cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxamide, H2pht = phthalic acid] have been hydrothermally synthesized. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the complexes 1 and 2 represent a 4-connected diamondoid topology with a 3- fold interpenetrating feature. Moreover, the fluorescent properties of complexes 1 and 2 are studied.

        Carbon Medicine in Ancient China

        In traditional Chinese medicine, some herbs are used after toasting or roasting. The process is called "Zhi Tan" in Chinese, which means charring, and the herbs after the treatment is called carbon medicine. Carbon medicine is widely used to arrest bleeding in traditional Chinese medicine. The paper introduces the records, development and applications of carbon medicine in ancient China. The earliest record found about carbon medicine was in the remains of Han dynasty (BC206-A.D.8). The paper also introduces the process of charring herbs and mechanism of carbon medicine in arresting bleeding. Calcium iron and tan released during the charring are believed as main factors for arresting bleeding, helped with porous surface structure of active carbon.

        Index admission laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis restores Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) score

        Backgrounds/Aims: Previous studies have evaluated quality of life (QoL) in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for cholelithiasis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate QoL after index admission LC in patients diagnosed with acute cholecystitis (AC) using the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) questionnaire. Methods: Patients ≥21 years admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore for AC and who underwent index admission LC between February 2015 and January 2016 were evaluated using the GIQLI questionnaire preoperatively and 30 days postoperatively. Results: A total of 51 patients (26 males, 25 females) with a mean age of 60 years (24-86 years) were included. Median duration of abdominal pain at presentation was 2 days (1-21 days). 45% of patients had existing comorbidities, with diabetes mellitus being most common (33%). 31% were classified as mild AC, 59% as moderate and 10% as severe AC according to Tokyo Guideline 2013 (TG13) criteria. Post-operative complications were observed in 8 patients, including retained common bile duct stone (n=1), wound infection (n=2), bile leakage (n=2), intra-abdominal collection (n=1) and atrial fibrillation (n=2). 86% patients were well at 30 days follow-up and were discharged. A significant improvement in GIQLI score was observed postoperatively, with mean total GIQLI score increasing from 106.0±16.9 (101.7-112.1) to 120.4±18.0 (114.8-125.9) (p<0.001). Significant improvements were also observed in GIQLI subgroups of gastrointestinal symptoms, physical status, emotional status and social function status. Conclusions: Index admission LC restores QoL in patients with AC as measured by GIQLI questionnaire.

        Research on facility layout optimization algorithm of deep-water semi-submersible drilling platform

        We aimed to create a facility layout design of semi-submersible drilling platform (DSDP) with performance constraints. The Boltzmann survival mechanism of simulated annealing algorithm was introduced into the replacement strategy of genetic algorithm to form an improved genetic algorithm called genetic and simulated annealing algorithm (GASA). The new algorithm alleviates the “combination explosion” and premature convergence of the traditional genetic algorithm. The layout problem of DSDP is efficiently solved by using this new algorithm. When the number of layout objects increases, GASA’s performance is better than that of the genetic algorithm.
