Edible insects are considered novel protein sources, and the edible insect breeding industry is growing rapidly. However, fungal pathogens are a major threat to this industry, and appropriate identification of causative agents is important for the development of antifungal agents. In 2019, strains of the fungal pathogen Metarhizium were isolated from infected second and third instar larvae of the economically important edible insect Protaetia brevitarsis, which were collected from separate farms in Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Based on morphological characteristics and multilocus phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region, and 50-region of gene encoding the 1-α elongation factor, the fungal strains were identified as Metarhizium majus. Here, we report the detailed phylogenetic characteristics and morphological description of this species, which is prevalent in Korea. Identification of the principal disease-causing agent can help develop disease prevention and antifungal strategies for application in edible insect-rearing farms.
국립대전현충원에서 분리한 남조류 구슬말(Nostoc commune)의 항염증 효과

구슬말(Nostoc commune Vaucher ex Bornet & Flahault)은 이형세포를 갖는 특징으로 다른 목들과 구분되는 남조류의 일종으로 극지방에서 열대지역까지 광범위한 지역에 분포하며 단세포가 연결되어 형성된 수많은 trichome들이 점액질에 둘러 쌓인 형태로 커다란 군체를 형성한다. 주로 토양, 암반, 잔디 위 등에 서식한다고 알려져 있으나 흔히 관찰되지 않기 때문에 현재 연구가 거의 없는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 토양 남조류인 N. commune HCW0811을 분리 및 동정하였으며 항염증 활성을 조사 하고자 하였다. 그 결과 N. commune HCW0811는 LPS로유도된 RAW 264.7세포에서 80%이상의 세포 생존율을 나타내었으며 NO, PGE2 및 TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β의 생성을 효과적으로억제하였다. 또한 western blot assay를 통해 iNOS, COX-2 및MAP kinase (p38, ERK1/2, JNK)와 NF-κB 세포내 신호전달 경로에서의 단백질 발현을 조사한 결과 이들의 발현이 유의하게억제됨을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과를 근거하여HCW0811가 다양한 염증 인자를 표적으로 하는 피부 면역 질환을 포함한 염증성 질환의 예방과 치료를 위한 항염증 기능성 화장품 및 식품소재로의 개발가능성을 제시한다.

Introduction: After surgery of liver or biliary tract, bile congestion is easily happened because of anatomical change of bile duct. We experienced relatively rare case of intrahepatic bile duct stones caused by foreign body left behind bile duct after previous bile duct surgery. Case report: A 84-year-old male patient came to our hospital due to two weeks of fever and chill. He underwent left lobectomy with hepaticojejunostomy for treatment of cholangiocarcinoma 10 years ago. Abdominal CT revealed multiple intrahepatic duct stones complicated with cholangitis and long, wire-like materials lied from IHBD to jejunum. Cholangitis were improved after PTBD and antibiotic treatment. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy was performed for treatment of bile duct stones. Endoscopic fi nding revealed numerous black stones occupying intrahepatic bile ducts and two black colored, long tube-like foreign bodies along the bile duct and jejunum. After removing stones with PTCS directed electrohydraulic lithotripsy, the foreign body was extracted with dormia basket through PTBD tract. The foreign body was identifi ed long plastic catheter. Conclusion: Foreign body in bile duct can induce abnormal fiow of bile juice and consequently the gallstone or sludge can be made. In this case, plastic catheter, the responsible cause of IHBD stone, thought to be placed from IHBD to jejunum for bile drainage after hepaticojejunostomy. But after clogging of the stent, the catheter caused the bile stasis and stone formation. So we report a rare case of foreign body induced intrahepatic bile duct stone treated by percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy.
Electrospinning of polyurethane/organically modified montmorillonite nanocomposites

<P>Polyurethane/organically modified montmorillonite (PU/O-MMT) nanocomposites were electrospun and the effect of O-MMT on the morphology and physical properties of the PU/O-MMT nanofiber mats were investigated for the first time. The average diameters of the PU/O-MMT nanofibers were ranged from 150 to 410 nm. The conductivities of the PU/O-MMT solutions were linearly increased with increasing the content of O-MMT, which caused a decrease in the average diameters of the PU/O-MMT nanofibers. The as-electrospun PU and PU/O-MMT nanofibers were not microphase separated. The exfoliated MMT layers were well distributed within the PU/O-MMT nanofibers and oriented along the fiber axis. When the PU/O-MMT nanofibers were annealed, the exfoliated MMT layers hindered the microphase separation of the PU. The electrospinning of PU/O-MMT nanocomposites resulted in PU nanofiber mats with improved Young's modulus and tensile strength. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. p53 Protein Expression Area as a Molecular Penumbra of Focal Cerebral Infarction in Rats

Objective : The authors investigate the spatial characteristics of apoptotic genes expressed around the focal cerebral infarction, and attempted to explain the penumbra with them. Methods : A delayed focal cerebral infarction was created in twelve adult Sprague-Dawley rats. We performed the immunohistochemical staining for the apoptosis, bcl-2 and p53 proteins and measured the local cerebral blood flow [CBF] at the infarction core area and peri-infarct area pre- and intra-operatively. The peri-infarct area was divided into six sectors by distance from the infarction border. Results : The size [$mm^2$] of apoptosis, bcl-2, and p53 areas were $3.1{\pm}1.2$, $4.7{\pm}2.1$, and $6.8{\pm}2.4$, respectively. Apoptosis, bcl-2 or p53 positive cells were concentrated at the peri-infarct area adjacent to the infarction core. Their numbers reduced peripherally, which was inversely proportional to the local CBF. The p53 area seems to overlap with and larger than the ischemic penumbra. Conclusion : The p53 positive area provides a substitutive method defining the penumbra under the molecular base of knowledge.
