The main purpose of this study is to find out whether current English textbooks for middle school students in Korea are properly leveled or graded. The researchers utilized Fry Readability Graph, Flesch Readability Formula, and Dale-Chall Readability Formula for the analysis of eight English textbooks which are being used for second graders. The results of the analysis are as follows. 1. The texts are at least one or two levels higher than the formula suggest. 2. Most of the English textbooks are not properly graded in the light of readability. 3. Dale-Chall's readability formula has more precise prediction about readability analysis among them.

A novel drug delivery system, detergent-phospholipid mixed micelles as proliposomes, for water-insoluble compounds was developed by investigating (i) spontaneous formation of small unilameilar vesicles (SUV) from bile salt-egg phosphatidylcholine mixed micelles, (ii) the molecular mechanism of micelle-to-vesicle transition in aqueous mixtures of detergent-phospholipid, (iii) preparation and screening of a suitable liposomal formulation for a lipophilic drug: solubilization of the drug within the lipid bilayer, evaluation of the solubility limit, and characterization of the resulting product with respect to the physical properties and stability of the drug in the system, and (iv) testing antitumor activity in vitro. The results showed that the new carrier had a strong possibility to be a biocompatible universal formulation for water-insoluble drugs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of hyperventilation and hyperoxygenation before and after endotracheal suctioning using closed-suction system on mechanically ventilated patients. Method: We selected 20 patients who were mechanically ventilated and randomly assigned into 4 groups according to the type of treatments using repeated measure. We applied 3 types of treatment, hyperventilation, hyperoxygenation, hyperventilation+hyperoxygenation, and no treatment and measured physiologic effects-SpO_(2), HR and, mena BP. Result: There were no significant differences between the group with no treatment and the group with hyperventilation, before and after endotracheal suctioning using closed-suction system(SpO_(2)(p=.693), HR(p=.970) and mean BP(p=.638)). There were no significant differences between the group with no treatment and the group with hyperoxygenation before and after endotracheal suctioning using closed-suction system(SpO_(2)(p=.693), HR(p=.970) and mean BP(p=.638)). There were no significant differences between the group with no treatment and the group with hyperventilation hyperoxygenation before and after endotracheal suctioning using closed-suction system(SpO_(2)(p=.693), HR(P=.970) and mean BP(P=.638)). Conclusion: As the results, all of the methods, hyperventilation, hyperoxygenation, and hyperventilation hyperoxygenation can be used when nurses apply endotracheal suctioning using closed-suction systems. In case of hypoxemic patients, hyperoxygenation is recommended for prevention of deoxygenation due to endotracheal suctioning using closed-suction systems.

Preproinsulin is a well-known precursor of human insulin for the regulation of blood glucose levels. In this study, fed-batch fermentations of recombinant Eschericha coli JM109/pPT-MRpi were carried out for the overexpression of human preproinsulin. The expression of human preproinsulin was controlled by the temperature inducible P2 promoter. The time-course profiles of fed-batch fermentation and SDS-PAGE analysis showed that human insulin expression was triggered by a culture temperature change from 30 to $37^{\circ}C$. Fermentation shift strategies, including the multi-step increase of temperature and the modulation of initiation time, were optimized to obtain high titers of cell mass and preproinsulin. The optimized fed-batch fermentation, consisting of a three-step shift of culture temperature from 30 to $37^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, gave the best results of 43.1 g/L of dry cell weight and 33.3% preproinsulin content, which corresponded to 2.0- and 1.2-fold increases, respectively, as compared to those of fed-batch culture at a constant temperature of $37^{\circ}C$.
Influence of Mulching Materials on Growth and Saponin Content in Codonopsis lanceolate

This research was carried out to investigate the lancemasides content and the growth characteristics of Codonopsis lanceolata cultivated using biodegradable film, non-woven fabric, and rice husks as various mulching materials. Non-treatment soil and hand weeding were used as controls. The results show that phosphoric acid and total N were higher in the non-woven fabric and biodegradable film treatments. In addition, plants growing in the biodegradable film and non-woven fabric treatment showed excellent growth. The content of lancemaside A had no significant difference among the applied mulching material treatments. However, its content increased in the biodegradable film and non-woven fabric. The contents of lancemaside B and D had no significant difference among treatments, but at very low levels compared to lancemaside A. Furthermore, the non-woven fabric and biodegradable film treatments effectively inhibited weed growth. Therefore, the non-woven fabric and biodegradable film treatment in C. lanceolata increased the content of lancemasides and improved C. lanceolata growth while inhibiting weed growth.
A Novel Mobile Antenna for Ku-Band Satellite Communications

A mobile antenna for multimedia communications with Ku-band geostationary satellite KOREASAT-3 and JSAT-2A is presented. The forward link of the satellite communication is 11.7 to 12.75 GHz, and the return link is 14.0 to 14.5 GHz. The mobile antenna is designed to be a stair structure using 24 active phased array elements in order to provide a low profile, and to be at a non-periodic array distance using the genetic algorithm. Also, the designed antenna uses the double beam forming method for stable satellite tracking. The fabricated mobile antenna is examined using various experiments to confirm its capability for practical application. From the measured results, the fabricated mobile antenna system is confirmed to have a good performance.

Objective: Inflammatory cytokines may play important roles in the pathogenesis of adult onset Still`s disease. The enhanced expression of IL-18 was reported in the bone marrow of a Japanese systemic onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patient but not in the other organs. To date, there are very few studies relating the bone marrow and AOSD. This study examined the bone marrow findings as well as TNF-α and IL-18 expression in the bone marrow of AOSD patients. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 15 AOSD patients who had undergone a bone marrow examination at a university hospital. The clinical and laboratory findings, as well as the bone marrow findings, were analyzed. Immunohistochemistry of IL-18 and TNF-α in bone marrow was performed. Results: The bone marrow cellularity and myeloid/erythroid cell ratio showed no correlation with the clinical and laboratory findings. TNF-α was expressed at 0.8∼9.8% and IL-18 was expressed at 0.4∼9.8% of bone marrow cells. Cytokine expression was not associated with the clinical patterns of AOSD. The platelet count correlated with the bone marrow TNF-α expression but TNF-α did not correlate with IL-18 expression. Conclusion: TNF-α and IL-18 expression in bone marrow were observed in some AOSD patients but there was no correlation with the other clinical and laboratory findings except for the platelet count.
