        Mutant divergence in sunflower induced through gamma radiation

        Gamma radiation-induced mutation divergence was studied in sunfower variety BARI Surjamukhi-2. A number of treatment combinations from T1 to T5 (100 to 500 gamma doses) were applied at the laboratory of Institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Ganakbari, Savar, and M1 and M2 generations were grown at the research feld of Oilseed Research Centre (ORC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur. Compared to the control plant, most of the mutagenic treatments in M1 generation showed a gradual reduction of mean performance. The seeds treated with 100 and 200 gamma doses produced taller plant than control, while seeds treated with 400 and 500 gamma doses did not survive or produce any seed to evaluate in further generation. The T3-treated (300 gamma dose) seeds produced plants of average height. Dwarfsm and semi dwarfsm being the most desirable traits in sunfower, the seeds obtained in T3 were grown to generate M2 population for further evaluation. In M2 generation, compared to control, plant improvement was recorded for plant stature (short and robust), increased head size, seed number, and seed yield. Besides quantitative divergence, qualitative divergence was also very obvious—such as diferent size, shape and orientation in head character, robust stem, broad leaf, short internode, tall mutants, branching mutants, diferent size, shape and seed coat color compared to non-treated seed. All these diverse mutants may have breeding value and be put into further research.

        The hyperconjugation effect on the graphene counterparts based on silicon and germanium

        Bending of the A = A (A of the group IVA) double bond neighboring is rationalized by the hyperconjugation phenomenon analysis. The bending is also observed for the high sized linear, cyclic or graphene-like compounds that imply the conjugated double bonds. The electronic delocalization takes place between occupied σ(π) and unoccupied π*(σ*) orbitals especially for compound implying Si and Ge atoms. Leading to rippled structure, this phenomenon affects the silicene and germane thickness sheets and probably would have some consequences on the properties of such compounds when they will be involved in the industries in the future. However we introduce a new parameter to assess the thickness of graphenic structures when the hyperconjugation takes place in the bonding framework. The study has been undertaken at high levels of theory like B3LYP/6-311 + G(3df,2p).

        Molecular Cloning and Expression of Candida antarctica lipase B in Corynebacterium genus

        This study, for the first time, reports the functional expression of lipase B derived from the yeast Candida antarctica (CALB) in Corynebacterium strain using the Escherichia coli plasmid PK18. The CALB gene fragment encoding a 317-amino-acid protein was successfully obtained from the total RNA of C. antarctica. CALB was readily produced in the Corynebacterium strain without the use of induction methods described in previous studies. This demonstrated the extracellular production of CALB in the Corynebacterium strain. CALB produced in the Corynebacterium MB001 strain transformed with pEC-CALB recombinant plasmid exhibited maximum extracellular enzymatic activity and high substrate affinity. The optimal pH and temperature for the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl laurate by CALB were 9.0 and 40℃, respectively. The enzyme was stable at pH 10.7 in the glycine-KOH buffer and functioned as an alkaline lipase. The CALB activity was inhibited in the presence of high concentration of Mg2+, which indicated that CALB is not a metalloenzyme. These properties are key for the industrial application of the enzyme.

        Comparison between density gradient centrifugation method, an extended version of the horizontal swim up method and the combination of both for sperm selection

        Objective To compare the degree of efficiency between density gradient centrifugation (DGC) method and an extended horizontal swim-up (SU) method. Methods A total of 97 couples undergoing in vitro fertilization were enrolled in the study. Semen samples were divided into three aliquots and treated using DGC, extended horizontal SU, and combined methods. DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation were detected in native semen samples and their three corresponding aliquots. The corresponding mature oocytes of each semen sample were divided into two sibling cultures. The first sibling culture was microinjected with semen pellets from DGC, and the second sibling culture was microinjected with semen pellets from the combination of both methods. Fertilization rate and embryonic development were assessed at day 3. Results DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation was significantly low in DGC and extended horizontal SU samples; however, the rates of DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation were significantly lower in extended horizontal SU samples than in DGC samples. The lowest rates of DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation corresponded to the samples treated with both methods. The highest rates of DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation corresponded to the samples treated with DGC. No significant difference was found in the fertilization rate or day 3 embryos between sibling cultures. Conclusion The combination of DGC and the extended horizontal SU techniques is best for giving the lowest rates of sperm DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation.

      • Joint Statistics of Partial Sums of Ordered Exponential Variates and Performance of GSC RAKE Receivers over Rayleigh Fading Channel

        <P>Spread spectrum receivers with generalized selection combining (GSC) RAKE reception were proposed and have been studied as alternatives to the classical two fundamental schemes: maximal ratio combining and selection combining because the number of diversity paths increases with the transmission bandwidth. Previous work on performance analyses of GSC RAKE receivers based on the signal to noise ratio focused on the development of methodologies to derive exact closed-form expressions for various performance measures. However, some open problems related to the performance evaluation of GSC RAKE receivers still remain to be solved such as the exact performance analysis of the capture probability and an exact assessment of the impact of self-interference on GSC RAKE receivers. The major difficulty in these problems is to derive some joint statistics of ordered exponential variates. With this motivation in mind, we capitalize in this paper on some new order statistics results to derive exact closed-form expressions for the capture probability and outage probability of GSC RAKE receivers subject to self-interference over independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels, and compare it to that of partial RAKE receivers.</P>

        Microrheological study of PVA–borax physical gel: effects of charge screening

        The charge screening effects on the viscoelasticity and the gelation properties of the mixture poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and borax transient physical hydrogel was studied by diffusing-wave spectroscopy microrheology (DWS) and classical rheometry. The critical gel point of PVA–borax hydrogel was demonstrated at the high frequency range according to the uniqueness criterion of Winter and Chambon (WC) and was found to decrease with increasing sodium chloride (NaCl) concentrations. Time-cure superposition strategy has been adopted to elucidate the scaling laws that govern the sol–gel transition of PVA–borax hydrogel. Then, the Rubinstein and Semenov (R–S) regime was established allowing the estimation of the size of the largest relaxed cluster Rz near the gel point. The increase of the ionic strength within the PVA–borax network was found to induce a decrease of Rz. The combination of these findings suggested that NaCl triggered a contraction of PVA–borax physical network as a result of the charge screening effect, leading to the enhancement of the associativity as well as the density of the hydrogel. This work is expected to provide an insight into the behavior of physical gels within biological systems with high ionic strengths.

      • Assessment of the Nature and Severity of Pain Using SF-MPQ for Cancer Patients at the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat in 2015

        Background: Cancer is a worldwide health problem and pain is among the most common and unpleasant effects affecting well-being of cancer patients. Accurate description of pain can help physicians to improve its management. Many English tools have been developed to assess pain. Onkly a limited number of these are applied in Arab countries. Our aim was to assess the quality, the nature and the severity of pain using the short McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) on cancer patients in the National Institute of Oncology (NIO) in Rabat, Morocco. Materials and Methods: The tool used is the SF-MPQ inspired from the Arabic version of the MPQ. The subjects were cancer patients (N=182) attending the NIO, from 24th October 2015 to 8th January 2016, aging ${\geq}18$ years old, experiencing pain and coming to have or to update their pain medication. Results: The rate of participation was 96.3%. Eight patients had difficulties to express their pain using descriptors, but could use the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the body diagram. The most frequent sensory descriptors were 'Throbbing', 'Shooting', 'Hot-Burning'. The most used affective descriptor was 'Tiring-Exhausting'. The mean VAS was 6.6 (2.4). The mean score of all items was 11.9 (7.8). The patients were suffering from severe pain. The internal consistency of the form was s acceptable. Conclusions: The findings indicate that most of the patients attending the pain center of the NIO could use the descriptors of the SF-MPQ to describe their pain. They indicate the usefulness of the SF-MPQ to assess the nature and the severity of pain in cancer patients. This tool should be tested in other Moroccan and Arabic contexts associated with other tools in clinical trials.

        Radial Variation in Selected Wood Properties of Indonesian Merkusii Pine

        Merkusii pine wood (Pinus merkusii) was extensively planted throughout Indonesia, where it is only indigenous in northern Sumatera, by the Dutch during colonial times. The demand for this wood species, especially in the domestic market, has increased notably, despite its limited durability regarding decay resistance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of juvenile and mature wood on merkusii pine and to analyze its radial features from pith to bark based on density, shrinkage, static bending in modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity, fiber length, microfibril angle, and durability. A segmented modeling approach was used to find the juvenile-mature transition. The graveyard test was performed to characterize the termite resistance from pith to bark of merkusii pine. The maturations were estimated to start at radial increments of 15 cm from the pith by fiber length and of 12 cm from the pith by microfibril angle. The projected figures for the proportion of juvenile wood at breast height were around 65%. The results also indicate that the pine wood was 0.52 g/㎤ in density, 1.45 in coefficient of anisotropy, which indicates its good stability, 7597 MPa in modulus of elasticity, and 63 MPa in modulus of rupture. Natural durability against subterranean termite of the merkusii pine wood was rated to be grade 4 to 0 from pith to bark. However, after being treated by Entiblu and Enborer preservatives, its rating increased to grade 10 to 9.

        Generalized Area Spectral Efficiency of Wireless Ad-hoc Networks over Rayleigh Fading

        Generalized area spectral efficiency (GASE) was introduced as a metric to quantify the spectral utilization efficiency ofwireless transmissions. Unlike other performance metrics, GASEtakes into account the spatial property of wireless transmissions. In this paper, we extend the research on GASE from link levelto network level. In particular, we consider a wireless ad-hoc network with Poisson distributed nodes. We take into account the cochannel interference and derive the generic closed-form momentgenerating function (MGF) expression of aggregate interferencein such network. With the interference statistics, we calculate theergodic capacity, affected area, and GASE of the network overRayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, we analyze the effect ofcarrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA)mechanism on the GASE performance of such network. Finally,we propose a new cognitive paradigm that allows the secondarytransmitters that are located outside the primary affected area totransmit. With this paradigm, we can achieve high ergodic capacitywhile effectively utilizing the space-spectrum resource of primarynetwork. Besides, through mathematical analysis and numericalexamples, we show that GASE provides a new perspective on transmission power selection and secondary network optimization.
