α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) was synthesized by salt solution methods to prepare a promising biomaterial for bone tissue repair and regeneration. The successful synthesis of α-HH was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) scanning. The sterility of α-HH before and after irradiation with gamma ray was firstly confirmed by Colonies Forming Units (CFU) counting assay, to target the surgical grade application. In vitro tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, crystal violet (CV) and acridine orange (AO) staining was performed to assess the initial cytotoxicity and cell attachment ability of α-HH. Further in vivo implantation into rabbit distal femoral condyles defect exhibited the ability of salt solution-synthesized α-HH to promote the localization of osteocytes and osteoblasts, which improve the bone tissue repair and regeneration. The findings suggested that α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate synthesized by salt solution method is a potential material that can be used as bone substitutes.

Ballbots, which have been studied for over ten years, are under-actuated mobile robots that operate using the inverted pendulum paradigm. Controlling a ballbot poses a number of challenges, including maintaining the stable upright posture from the ground in all directions and making sure it follows the desired trajectory. External factors such as a minor change in contact surface properties or fabrication errors can affect the system's stabilization and transfer capabilities. In this study, an adaptive hierarchical sliding mode control algorithm based on an artificial neural network is developed to make the ballbot robust to external factors. The use of the proposed controller ensures system stability despite uncertainties including friction, accidental centrifugal forces and gravity that occur when the ballbot follows the reference trajectory. The system stability is guaranteed on the basis of Lyapunov theory. Control efficiency and robot stability under system uncertainties are demonstrated by numerical simulation.
Anatomic characteristics and novel transplantation model of the canine uterus

Background: In Vietnam, the rate of absolute uterine factor infertility is increasing, but no study has been published on uterine transplantation. The present study was designed to comprehensively observe the canine uterine anatomy and to examine the possibility of using a living canine donor for uterine transplantation training and further research. Methods: Ten female Vietnamese mixed-breed dogs were sacrificed for anatomical research, and 15 additional pairs were used to evaluate the novel uterine transplant model. Results: The anatomic features of the canine uterus differed considerably from those of the human uterus, with the uterine vessels originating from branches of the pudendal vessels (also known as the vaginal vessels). The uterine vascular pedicle had a small diameter (1 to 1.5 mm for arteries and 1.2 to 2.0 mm for veins) and required manipulation under a microscope. To perform uterine transplantation, the donor specimen’s artery and vein lengths were successfully reconstructed by anastomosis between both sides of the vasculature using autologous Y-shaped subcutaneous veins. The living-donor uterine transplantation model constructed in this study was feasible, with the transplanted uterus surviving in 86.7% of cases (13/15). Conclusions: Uterine transplantation was successfully performed in a Vietnamese canine living donor model. This model could be helpful in uterine transplantation training and improve the transplantation success rate in humans.

Aims: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) is considered as a safe and effective procedure in well - selected patients and appropriate surgical technique. Our aim is to evaluate suitability of using protocol for LPD in treatment of periampullary cancer at a single team. Methods: case series Results: Indication for LPD included 37 cases with resectable tumors which were classified basing on NCCN. All witness evaluation risk of complications with PREPARE score, ASA and evaluation risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) with FRS classification. There were 2 open conversions because of vein resections, accounting for 5.4%. Standard lymphadenectomy was performed in all of 37 cases. In term of PREPARE score, major complications (Clavien - Dindo >= III) were 17.8%, 0% and 0% (5/28, 0/5 and 0/2 cases) in low risk, intermediate risk and high risk group, respectively. All of cases had ASA I or II. POPF happened 11.1% (1/9), 4.1% (1/24) and 50% (1/2) in low risk, intermediate risk and high risk group, respectively. Frozen section was needed for R0 margin. Retrieved lymph nodes was 8 - 18 with 12 lymph nodes in average. Conclusions: Indication for LPD with resectable tumors is acceptable. ASA I or II is a safe measure to select patient for LPD. FRS classification shows appropriation to evaluate risk of POPF.
A bayesian network analysis of reforestation decisions by rural mountain communities in Vietnam

Reforestation is a primary factor in protecting upland forests providing economic sustenance for livelihood and keeping watersheds intact. In this study, we evaluated the importance of several direct and indirect drivers that can influence people’s decision for reforestation. Acquiring data from Cao Phong district of Vietnam, we utilized Bayesian Network (BN) to analyze how household characteristics, socio-economic status, biophysical environment, institutional support, and farm characteristics influenced reforestation decisions of local people. BN allowed us to identify 1) the main drivers that affect landholders ‘planted forest area, 2) how the key drivers affect among themselves, and 3) what causes constraints in tree planting. We surveyed 100 households for potential drivers, identified significant drivers by using bivariate analysis and stepwise linear regression, and created a BN to predict scenarios with different household’s perception regarding the planted forest area. The results revealed five direct drivers (attitude of household to tree planting, sources of investment capital for planting practice, land area, distance from household to market, experience of participating in forestry program) and seven indirect drivers (information about forestry program, incentives supported for tree planters, land tenure, accessibility to plantation forest, rotation length of planting trees, forest area, household income) that significantly influenced farmers’ reforestation decisions. Constraints in planting trees were due to the difficulties in protecting property from mortality and unreliable profit. Our results can assist design efficient forestry programs in Vietnam and in other comparable areas.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the effect of electro-osmosis on lubricating the interface between the cement paste-based material and metal wall. A new experimental apparatus was developed and set up in this study. Two scales of cement paste-based materials were used and tested: cement paste and mortar. Tests performed were as follows: (i) range of potential difference varies from 5 to 30 V; (ii) range of metallic plate slope varies from 7° to 15°. The pre-movement time was reduced and the sample velocity was increased by increasing the potential difference and the slope. The rheological properties of two mixtures were determined to identify the characteristics of the fluid film at the interface that plays an important role in lubricating the sample. The permeability coefficient for managing the contact lubrication was also determined in this study.
