Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the analgesic and antistress effect of clary sage-inhalation in periodontitis patients. Methods. Thirty-five patients with periodontitis, who were classified under Russell`s Periodontal Index, were studied from September to December 2009. All patients understood the purpose of this study and written informed consent for the study was obtained. Results. Clary sage-inhalation was conducted during the treatment period. Blood pressure, pulse, visual analog scale, and salivary cortisol levels were measured before and after treatment. The visual analog scale score which represents subjective pain perception in the experimental (clary sage-inhalation) group was significantly lower than that in the vehicle (almond oil-inhalation) or control (saline-inhalation) group. In addition, the experimental group showed the lowest systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate among the three groups. However, there was no significant difference in salivary cortisol level among the three groups. Conclusions. Clary sage-inhalation is effective in alleviating pain and blood pressure. These results suggest that clary sage-inhalation can be a useful method for the relief of pain during the treatment of periodontitis.

Hamartoma is a very rare congenital tumor. A few cases of hamartomatous pol yps in the stomach were reported. Most of harrurtomatous polyps in the stomach occur in patients of polyposis coli. We have experienced four cases of gastric hamartomatous polyps without polyposis coli. There are some differences between previously reported cases and ours. In our casee, the distribution of age is from fourth to ninth decade, men and women ratio is 1: 1. The number of polyps are one in three cases and two in one case. The size of polyps is from 5mm to 12 mm. The location of polyps are various, but most common in antrum. We have experienced four cases which were different from previously reported ones and report them with a brief review of literatures.

Objectives: Occult Hepatitis B virus infection is defined as HBV DNA positivity without HBsAg by serologic test. It has been thought to be caused by the escape mutant which do not express HBsAg or prouduce S protein with altered antigenicity. But the precise mechanism and pathophysiology of this phenomenon is still unclear despite of numerous previous reports. We investigated occult hepatitis B infection and their clinical characteristics in the patients with various chronic liver diseases. Methods and Materials: Thirty eight patients with chronic liver diseases with positive HBsAb or negative HBsAg were included. After confirmation of HBV DNA, we performed entire base pair sequence analysis on the C region of HBV genome. Results: 1. HBV DNA was detected 29 cases among 38 patients(76.3%) they had 12 chronic toxic hepatitis(41.4%), 7 liver cirrhosis(24.1%), 7 cases of simultaneous hepatocellular carcinoma with liver cirrhosis(24.1%), 1 chronic C hepatitis(3.4%), 1 alcoholic liver disease(3.4%), and 1 uncertified cause(3.4%). 2. The mutation at core promoter region were found in 24 patients(83.1%), of which 15 showed simultaneous mutations in both nucleotide 1762 and 1764, and 1 patients in 1764 single mutation. 3. Twenty four of 29 patients(83.1%) have mutations at precore region, of which the nucleotide 1896(codon 28) was the most frequent site(9 patients- 37.5%). 4. The mutations were found at whole length of core gene, but were the most frequent at epitope regions. For cytotoxic T cell epitope region, the mutation in codon 27 and 31 were from 9(31.0%) and 19(65.5%) patients, respectively. For CD4 epitope region, the mutations in codon 49, 60 and 76 were from 12(41.4%), 9(31.0%) and 16 patients(55.2%), respectively. And for B cell epitope region, those in codon 130 and 143 were from 19(65.5%) and 15 patients(52.0%), respectively. 5. S gene mutations were observed in only 3 patients, 2 liver cirrhosis and 1 hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Point mutation was frequently observed in codon 51, 67, 68, 91 of pre-S1, codon 38, 39, 40, 46 of pre-S2, and codon 3, 27, 82, 92 of S gene. In the case of hepatocellular carcinoma, the 120bp deletion from pre-S1 to pre-S2 was observed. Conclusion: From the above results, we may conclude that the occult hepatitis B virus infection is highly prevalent in epidemic area of HBV infection, and may be related with severe liver diseases. Escape mutant may be an important mechanism of this phenomenon.

Effects of pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extracts in high-fat diet-fed obese mice

Red ginseng and its extracts have been used as traditional medicines and functional foods in countries worldwide. The aim of this study was to examine the bioavailability of pectin lyase-modified red ginseng extracts (GS-E3D), and the effects of GS-E3D on adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 adipocytes, as well as on metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver in high-fat diet fed obese C57BL/6 mice. Mice were divided into 5 groups: normal diet group, high fat diet-vehicle group, high fat diet + 0.1 g/kg GS-E3D (0.1-GS-E3D), high fat diet + 0.3 g/kg (0.3-GS-E3D), high fat diet + 1.0 g/kg (1.0-GS-E3D). Treatment of GS-E3D reduced differentiation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes with low cytotoxicity. In the animal model, compared to the high fat diet control, serum glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, TG, and leptin level were reduced in treatment animals in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, we found that GS-E3D could decrease total hepatic lipid droplets. These results suggest that GS-E3D, as a dietary supplement, has beneficial effects on obesity and may have useful effects in health-care products.

The antimicrobial activities of Smilax china L. against spoilage bacteria isolated from Mang-gae rice cake were investigated and the storage stability of the Mang-gae rice cake was enhanced. Spoilage bacteria, which cause Mang-gae rice cake to rot, were isolated from commercial Mang-gae rice cake, and most of the isolated strains were identified as Bacillus sp. After the leaves, roots, shoots, and stalks of the Smilax china L. were extracted using 50% ethanol as the solvent, their antimicrobial activities were investigated using the paper disc method by treating them with 50 μL of Bacillus cereus, which is known as a major pathogenic micro-organism in foods that contain starch, as the test organism. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were compared according to the size of the clear zones around the paper discs. The root extract showed significant antimicrobial activities. When red beans, which are used as stuffing for Mang-gae rice cake, were treated with the root extract of the Smilax china L., the viable cell count of the Mang-gae rice cake was 5.04 Log CFU/g after 48-hr storage, and the cake showed significantly slower growth of bacteria than with commercial products. These results show that treatment of red beans with Smilax china root extract could improve the storage stability of Mang-gae rice cake.
