Improved trajectory similarity-based approach for turbofan engine prognostics

        Cheng-Geng Huang,Hong-Zhong Huang,Weiwen Peng,Tudi Huang 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.10

Trajectory similarity-based prediction (TSBP) is an emerging real-time remaining useful life (RUL) prediction method that has drawn considerable attention in the field of data-driven prognostics. TSBP is fast, and the corresponding model is easy to train. However, TBSP only provides a point estimation of RUL, which is insufficient for some specific prognostic applications. Hence, this study introduces an improved TSBP method to handle the issue of prognostic uncertainty. On the basis of an adaptive kernel density estimation technique and β-criterion, the improved TSBP method not only provides an accurate and precise point prediction of RUL but also specifies the confidence interval of RUL prediction. The capability of obtaining the confidence interval of RUL can enhance the TSBP method for uncertainty management. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through two cases studies, which are related to turbofan engine prognostics.

      • Predictors of Positive Bone Metastasis in Newly Diagnosed Prostate Cancer Patients

        Chien, Tsu-Ming,Lu, Yen-Man,Geng, Jiun-Hung,Huang, Tsung-Yi,Ke, Hung-Lung,Huang, Chun-Nung,Li, Ching-Chia,Chou, Yii-Her,Wu, Wen-Jeng,Huang, Shu-Pin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.3

Background: The prevalence of prostate cancer (PCa) has been increasing in recent years. Treatment strategies are largely based on the results of bone scan screening. Therefore, our aim was to investigate predictors of positive bone metastasis in newly diagnosed PCa patients. Materials and Methods: After extensive review, 336 consecutive patients newly diagnosed with PCa between April 2010 and November 2013 at our institution were enlisted in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to bone scan results. Univariate analyses (Chi-square test for discrete variables and independent t-test for continuous variables) were applied to determine the potentially significant risk factors associated with distant bone metastasis. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to further investigate the influence of these factors on bone metastasis. Results: The patient mean age was $71.9{\pm}8.6years$ (range: 48 to 94 years). The mean prostate specific antigen (PSA) level and biopsy Gleason score were $260.2{\pm}1107.8ng/mL$ and $7.4{\pm}1.5$, respectively. The body mass index (BMI) for the series was $24.5{\pm}3.4kg/m^2$. Sixty-four patients (19.0%) had a positive bone scan result. Patients with positive bone scan results had a significantly lower BMI ($23.3{\pm}3.5$ vs. $24.8{\pm}3.3$; p=0.003), a higher Gleason score ($8.5{\pm}1.1$ vs. $7.1{\pm}1.5$; p < 0.001), and a higher PSA level ($1071.3{\pm}2337.1$ vs. $69.4{\pm}235.5$; p < 0.001) than those without bone metastasis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis employing the above independent predictors demonstrated that a Gleason score of ${\geq}7$, clinical stage ${\geq}T3$, $BMI{\leq}22kg/m^2$, and an initial PSA level of ${\geq}20ng/mL$ were all independent predictors of bone metastasis. Conclusions: A bone scan might be necessary in newly diagnosed PCa patients with any of the following criteria: clinical stage T3 or higher, a Gleason score of 7 or higher, BMI equal to or less than 22, and a PSA level of 20 or higher.

Volunteering and psychological wellbeing in college students in China

        Geng Yun,Huang Chien‐Chung,Deng Guosheng,Cheung Shannon P.,Liao Jinyu 한국사회복지학회 2022 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.16 No.2

This study used data from 1871 college students across China to examine the relations among volunteering and PWB in 2020. Results of regression analysis indicate that volunteering had positive effects on the PWB of the students. Students whose motivation to volunteer was public interest had greater PWB, regardless of the degree to which they also reported private gain as a motivation. The significant interaction results indicate that students whose volunteer motivation included both public interest and private gains and who had high frequency of volunteering were more likely to have higher PWB. Policy and practice implications were discussed.

      • Educational Technology Training for Faculty Members in Chinese Higher Education Institutions: Status and Directions

        Geng Chen,Huiyu Zhang,Ronghuai Huang APEC국제교육협력원 2006 Asia-Pacific Cybereducation Journal Vol.2 No.1

A survey of staff members of higher education institutions across China at which educational technology training programs had been conducted indicated that the great majority of respondents were using educational technology in their work, although a smaller proportion felt that they had the necessary knowledge and skills to do so efficiently and effectively. The most common skills mastered were basic computer operations, Web searching, and the use of presentation software. Skills that are more integrally related to effective student learning and cost-efficient operation, such as course management and evaluation and integration of technology with lessons, were mastered only by a small minority. Respondents recommended that future training take the form of blended learning, combining face-to-face format with distance learning and self-study, and that it emphasize practical skills and direct application to the participant’s work. Other recommendations are also made regarding the establishment of standards for educational technology competencies and the improvement of evaluation of training courses.

Aerosol Measurement and Property Analysis Based on Data Collected by a Micro-pulse LIDAR over Shanghai, China

        Xingyou Huang,Xiaowu Yang,Fuhai Geng,Hua Zhang,Qianshan He,Lingbing Bu 한국광학회 2010 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.14 No.3

A micro-pulse LIDAR system (MPL) was employed to measure the aerosol over Pudong, Shanghai from July 2008 to January 2009. Based on Fernald method, aerosol optical variables such as extinction coefficient were retrieved and analyzed. Results show that aerosol exists mainly in low layers; aerosol loading reaches its maximum in the afternoon, and then decreases with time until its minimum at night. Most of the aerosol concentrates in the layer below 3 km, and optical extinction coefficient in the layer below 2 km contributes 84.25% of that below 6 km. Two extinction coefficient peaks appear in the near surface layer up to 500 m and in the level around 1000 m. Aerosol extinction coefficient shows a seasonal downward trend from summer to winter.

Effect of Podophyllotoxin Conjugated Stearic Acid Grafted Chitosan Oligosaccharide Micelle on Human Glioma Cells

Wang, Geng Huan,Shen, He Ping,Huang, Xuan,Jiang, Xiao Hong,Jin, Cheng Sheng,Chu, Zheng Min The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2020 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.63 No.6

Objective : To study the physiochemical characteristics of podophyllotoxin (PPT) conjugated stearic acid grafted chitosan oligosaccharide micelle (PPT-CSO-SA), and evaluate the ability of the potential antineoplastic effects against glioma cells. Methods : PPT-CSO-SA was prepared by a dialysis method. The quality of PPT-CSO-SA including micellar size, zeta potential, drug encapsulation efficiency and drug release profiles was evaluated. Glioma cells were cultured and treated with PPT and PPT-CSO-SA. The ability of glioma cells to uptake PPT-CSO-SA was observed. The proliferation of glioma cells was determined by 3-[4, 5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl]-2, 5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The apoptosis and morphology of U251 cells were observed by 4',6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI) dye staining. Cell cycle analysis was performed by flow cytometry. The migration ability of U251 cells was determined by wound healing test. Results : PPT-CSO-SA had nano-level particle size and sustained release property. The encapsulation efficiency of drug reached a high level. The cellular uptake percentage of PPT in glioma cells was lower than that of PPT-CSO-SA (p<0.05). The inhibitory effect of PPT-CSO-SA on glioma cells proliferation was significantly stronger than that of PPT (p<0.05). The morphologic change of apoptosis cell such as shrinkage, karyorrhexis and karyopyknosis were observed. The percentage of U251 cells in G2/M phase increased significantly in the PPT-CSO-SA group compared with PPT group (p<0.05). Compared with the PPT group, the cell migration ability of the PPT-CSO-SA group was significantly inhibited after 12 and 24 hours (p<0.05). Conclusion : PPT-CSO-SA can effectively enhance the glioma cellular uptake of drugs, inhibit glioma cells proliferation and migration, induce G2/M phase arrest of them, and promote their apoptosis. It may be a promising anti-glioma nano-drug.

Inductive expression patterns of genes related to Toll signaling pathway in silkworm (Bombyx mori) upon Beauveria bassiana infection

        Tao Geng,Yuxia Huang,Chengxiang Hou,Guangxing Qin,Dingding Lv,Xijie Guo 한국응용곤충학회 2016 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.19 No.3

Innate immunity is critical to insects and plays an important role in pathogen elimination and wound healing. Toll signaling pathway is the major signaling pathway associated with insect innate immunity mediating synthesis of anti-fungal/bacterial peptides. To better understand the Toll signaling pathwaymediated immune response in Bombyx mori against Beauveria bassiana infection, expression patterns of genes encoding sixteen putative components of Toll signaling pathway in the silkworm larvae challenged with B. bassiana, including four pattern recognition receptors (PRRs, i.e. BmβGRP 1, 2, 3, 4), eight Toll-like receptors (TLRs, i.e. Bm18w, BmToll 1, 3, 6, 9, 7, 10, 11) and four effectors (BmMoricin 1, BmGloverin 2, BmDefensin 1 and BmLysozyme 1), were analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR. At the same time, the changes in their expression by RNAi knock-down of the four PRRswere also detected. Moreover, the effects of Toll signaling pathway inhibitors on antifungal activity in larvae hemolymphwere also analyzed. The results showed that the expression levels of genes encoding sixteen putative components of Toll signaling pathway were obviously altered by the challengewith B. bassiana, but their temporal regulation mode was significantly different. Based on the expression patterns of the genes related to Toll signaling pathway, two sub-paths of immune signal recognition and transduction might be proposed in the response of silkworm larvae against B. bassiana infection. Besides, Toll signaling pathway inhibitor could significantly inhibit the antifungal activity in hemolymph and resulted in increased sensitivity of silkworm larvae to the B. bassiana infection, while the treatment with heat-inactivated B. bassiana could induce antifungal activity in the hemolymph and led to stronger resistance of the silkworm. These results implied that Toll signaling pathway played important roles in the antifungal immune response of the silkworm larvae, in which different components of Toll signaling pathway might play a specific regulatory function. These findings yield insights into the innate immune mechanisms underlying Toll signaling pathway in silkworm.

Propagation Dynamics of a Finite-energy Airy Beam with Sinusoidal Phase in Optical Lattice

        Xiaoyuan Huang,Manna Chen,Geng Zhang,Ye Liu,Hongcheng Wang 한국광학회 2020 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.4 No.4

The propagation of a truncated Airy beam with spatial phase modulation (SPM) is investigated in Kerr nonlinearity with an optical lattice. Before the truncated Airy beam enters the optical lattice, a sinusoidal phase is introduced on the wave-front of the beam. The effect of the spatial phase modulation and optical lattice on propagation behavior is analyzed by direct numerical simulation. It is found that the propagation direction of a truncated Airy beam can be effectively controlled by adjusting the values of phase shift. The effects of optical amplitude, truncation factor, spatial modulation frequency, lattice period and lattice depth on the propagation are discussed in detail. By choosing a high modulation depth, the finite-energy Airy beam can be deflected with a large deflection angle in an optical lattice.
