        Reliability and Validity of the Beck Depression Inventory-II among Korean Adolescents

        Objective-The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) is one of the most popular scales for evaluating the severity of depression in adolescents as well as adults. The prevalence of depression increases during adolescence, and it has shown a rapid increase with occurrence at an earlier age and a tendency to continue into adulthood. Data from an adolescent nonclinical sample provides us more information related to depressive symptoms as potential risk factors. The current study was designed to two objectives: 1) to analyze the reliability and validity the BDI-II among Korean adolescents and 2) to evaluate the factorial structure in a Korean nonclinical adolescent sample. Methods-The participants included 1072 adolescent boys and girls. We assessed the internal consistency, corrected item-total correlation, and the convergent validity of the BDI-II. We also performed confirmatory factor analyses to determine the internal structure of the BDI-II for Korean adolescents using Mplus 6.1. Results-The Cronbach’s alpha for the BDI-II total score was 0.89. The correlation between the BDI-II and the PHQ-9 was strong (r=0.75), and anxiety-related measures were 0.68 and 0.71, which were also in the high range. Among the five different factor structures, the modified three-factor model demonstrated the best overall fit. Conclusion-The BDI-II is a reliable tool for measuring the severity of depressive symptoms in Korean adolescents. Therefore, the findings can provide basic information for examining the prevalence rate, intervention strategies for depression in adolescents.

        Gender Difference of the Association between Energy Intake Expenditure Balance and Depression among Korean Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study from the 2014, 2016, and 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

        Background: Diet and physical activity are key factors related to depressive mood. Previous studies have demon-strated the effects of diet and physical activity on depression. However, the effect of energy intake-expenditure bal-ance (EIEB) on mental health has not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to analyze the association between EIEB and depression.Methods: A total of 13,460 participants (5,660 men and 7,800 women) aged ≥19 years were obtained from the 2014, 2016, and 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). EIEB was defined as the dif-ference between the daily energy intake and energy expenditure. Energy intake was calculated and provided by the KNHANES using a 24-hour recall survey. Energy expenditure was estimated as the sum of basal metabolic rate and physical activity. Logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the association between sex-specific quartile groups (Q1–Q4) of EIEB and depression after adjusting for socioeconomic status, body mass index, lifestyle factors, and underlying diseases.Results: Women in Q3 of EIEB (211–669 kcal) had a significantly lower risk of depression (odd ratio [OR], 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67–0.92) than those in Q1 of EIEB (<-167 kcal). The adjusted ORs of depression were 0.87 (95% CI, 0.75–1.02) in Q2 and 0.86 (95% CI, 0.74–1.01) in Q4, with P for trend=0.030. There were no significant asso-ciations between the EIEB quartile groups and depression in men after adjusting for potential confounders (P for trend=0.564).Conclusion: Our results suggested that the EIEB is negatively associated with depression in Korean women.

      • Toward an interpretable Alzheimer’s disease diagnostic model with regional abnormality representation via deep learning

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we propose a novel method for magnetic resonance imaging based Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) diagnosis that systematically integrates voxel-based, region-based, and patch-based approaches into a unified framework. Specifically, we parcellate the brain into predefined regions based on anatomical knowledge (<I>i.e.</I>, templates) and derive complex nonlinear relationships among voxels, whose intensities denote volumetric measurements, within each region. Unlike existing methods that use cubical or rectangular shapes, we consider the anatomical shapes of regions as atypical patches. Using complex nonlinear relationships among voxels in each region learned by deep neural networks, we extract a “regional abnormality representation.” We then make a final clinical decision by integrating the regional abnormality representations over the entire brain. It is noteworthy that the regional abnormality representations allow us to interpret and understand the symptomatic observations of a subject with AD or MCI by mapping and visualizing these observations in the brain space. On the baseline MRI dataset from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for four binary classification tasks and one three-class classification task. Additionally, we conducted exhaustive experiments and analysis to validate the efficacy and potential of our method.</P>

      • Enhanced Dual Adversarial Network for Real Image Noise Removal and Generation using Edge Loss Function

        Many methods have been proposed to address the real noise, they suffer from restoring the edge regions appropriately. Because most convolutional neural network-based denoising methods capture noise characteristics through pixel loss that only detects contaminated pixels, high frequency components cannot be considered. This causes blurs and artifacts on edge regions which has the high frequency component. In this paper, we apply an edge loss function to the dual adversarial network to deal with this issue. Using the edge loss and the pixel loss together, the network has been improved to restore not only the actual intensity but also the edges effectively.

        『상서』고문(古文)변위(辨僞)의 성운(聲韻) 활용

        고문상서의 변위(辨僞) 작업을 집대성한 염약거(閻若璩)는 다양한 방법론을 동원하여 『상서고문소증』을 완성하였다. 그 대표적인 방법론이 바로 경전(經傳)의 문체가 문장 내의 협운(叶韻)을 중시했던 점에 착안한 성운(聲韻)의 비교 방법이다. 글자의 성운(聲韻)에 대한 염약거의 기본생각은 고음(古音)과 금음(今音)이 단절되었고, 후대인들이 상고 문장의 협운과 상고음을 알지못함으로 인해 『상서』의 위편에 그 허점이 드러났다는 것이다. 대표적인 것이 「대우모」의 “윤집궐중(允執厥中)”구와 “덕내강(항)(德乃降)”, 「오자지가」의 “울도(鬱陶)”구와 “기삼왈(其三曰)”구, 「태서」의 “천시자아민시(天視自我民視)”구의 불협운(不叶韻)이다. 한편 고문(古文)에서 의도적으로 협운을 만든 경우와 고운(古韻)을 그대로 방치하여 의도치않게 협운이 된 경우도 존재한 것으로 인식하였다. 청대(淸代) 고증학의 성과 역시 현대 음운학(音韻學)에서는 또한 비판을 면치못하는 측면이 있지만, 상고(上古)와 현대를 연결하는 고리로서 나름의 성과가 있었고, 『상서』의 변위과정에서도 적지않은 역할을 해냄으로써 고문상서의 위작을 증명하는 중요한 자료로 제시되었다. Yenruoju, who compiled the work of distinguishing the forgery of old text 《shangshu》, mobilized various methodologies to complete the 《Shangshuguwenshuzheng》. The representative methodology is the comparison method of letter sound, focusing on the fact that the style of the scriptures emphasized the rhyme in the sentence. Yanruoju's basic idea of letter sound is that the old sound and the present sound are disconnected. and the fault was revealed in the forgery of 《shangshu》, as the later generations did not know the rhyme and old sound of the old texts. For example, “The mind of man is restless, prone (to err); its affinity to what is right is small.”(允執厥中), “Gao-Yao with vigorous activity sowing abroad his virtue”(德乃降) of 「The Counsels of the Great YÜ」(大禹謨), “Anxieties crowd together in our hearts”(鬱陶), “The third said”(其三曰) of 「Songs of the Five Sons」(五子之歌) and “Heaven hears as my people hear”(天視自我民視) of 「Great Declaration(II)」(泰誓), the rhyme of these sentences is wrong. On the other hand, there are cases in which a rhyme is intentionally created from the old text, and there are cases where the rhyme is unintentionally left unattended. The achievements of the Qing Dynasty's archaeological studies are also criticized in modern phonology. However, as a link between ancient and modern times, it had its own achievements. It was presented as an important evidence in the process of forgery determination of 《shangshu》.

      • Advanced Hybrid Supercapacitor Based on a Mesoporous Niobium Pentoxide/Carbon as High-Performance Anode

        <P>Recently, hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs), which combine the use of battery and supercapacitor, have been extensively studied in order to satisfy increasing demands for large energy density and high power capability in energy-storage devices. For this purpose, the requirement for anode materials that provide enhanced charge storage sites (high capacity) and accommodate fast charge transport (high rate capability) has increased. Herein, therefore, a preparation of nanocomposite as anode material is presented and an advanced HSC using it is thoroughly analyzed. The HSC comprises a mesoporous Nb<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>/carbon (m-Nb<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>–C) nanocomposite anode synthesized by a simple one-pot method using a block copolymer assisted self-assembly and commercial activated carbon (MSP-20) cathode under organic electrolyte. The m-Nb<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>–C anode provides high specific capacity with outstanding rate performance and cyclability, mainly stemming from its enhanced pseudocapacitive behavior through introduction of a carbon-coated mesostructure within a voltage range from 3.0 to 1.1 V (<I>vs</I> Li/Li<SUP>+</SUP>). The HSC using the m-Nb<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>–C anode and MSP-20 cathode exhibits excellent energy and power densities (74 W h kg<SUP>–1</SUP> and 18 510 W kg<SUP>–1</SUP>), with advanced cycle life (capacity retention: ∼90% at 1000 mA g<SUP>–1</SUP> after 1000 cycles) within potential range from 1.0 to 3.5 V. In particular, we note that the highest power density (18 510 W kg<SUP>–1</SUP>) of HSC is achieved at 15 W h kg<SUP>–1</SUP>, which is the highest level among similar HSC systems previously reported. With further study, the HSCs developed in this work could be a next-generation energy-storage device, bridging the performance gap between conventional batteries and supercapacitors.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2014/ancac3.2014.8.issue-9/nn501972w/production/images/medium/nn-2014-01972w_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn501972w'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
