Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation (DGMIF) consists of four research facilities (new drug development center, medical device development center, laboratory animal center, and clinical drug manufacturing center). The laboratory animal center is a facility to support the development of new drugs and medical devices, and plays a key role in evaluating the efficacy and safety tests of new drugs and medical devices through the management of laboratory animals, production of animal disease model, biometric analysis, experimental animal resource management, and in-vivo tests. The laboratory animal center is advancing image analysis equipment and surgical techniques to support high-quality animal experiments requiring high technology, and is improving the welfare of experimental animals through professional animal management, health monitoring, IACUC approval, post approval monitoring, and veterinary care to achieve reliable research results. DGMIF LAC has facilities for rodents including mouse and rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, and monkeys, and the rodent animal facility is using IVC and ISO-N cage system and areas are divided into four areas including species conservation area, small animal testing area, re-entry area for imaging analysis, and ABSL-2 area for infection tests using ABSL-2 level microorganism. For high-quality animal management, DGMIF LAC acquired ICLAS PEP (Performance evaluation program for diagnostic laboratories, International Council for Laboratory Animal Science) accredited for the first in South Korea in 2017, KESAF (Korean Excellent Laboratory Animal Facility) in 2016, and AAALAC (The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) International Full Accreditation in 2020. It is the only institution in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province that that has received these two accreditations. Since the operation of the animal facility in 2014, the number of laboratory animals has been steadily increasing. Furthermore, additional facility for mini-pigs was completely built. DGMIF LAC will play a major role in the evaluation of the effecacy tests for new drugs and medical devices through the maintenance and development of high-quality laboratory animals that comply with international standards.

Objective: To evaluate the side effect and cause of discontinuation of combined oral contraceptives or dienogest for 12 months or more to prevent endometriosis recurrence in patients with surgically confirmed endometriosis. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 213 women with endometriosis who had been treated with combined oral contraceptives (ethinyl estradiol 0.02mg/drospirenone 3 mg, EE/DRSP) or 2 mg of dienogest (DNG) once a day for 12 months or more at a single institute. Side effects appealed by patients, laboratory parameters, causes of discontinuation of medication and recurrence rate were evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 year after medication start (Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 and Y5). Results: EE/DRSP were administered to 59 patients and DNG were administered to 154 patients. Mean duration of postoperative use of EE/DRSP and DNG was 44.5±22.6 month and 23.6±13.5 month, respectively. The number of patients was 59, 58, 50, 38 and 27 in EE/DRSP group and 154, 121, 50, 26 and 12 in DNG group at Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 and Y5 respectively. The prevalence of side effects was 27.1%, 19.0%, 10.0%, 10.5% and 7.4% in EE/DRSP group and 29.2%, 15.7%, 14.0%, 23.1% and 0.0% in DNG group at Y1 to Y5. The discontinuation rate was 1.7%, 1.7%, 4.0%, 0.0% and 7.4% in EE/DRSP group and 10.4%, 3.3%, 4.0%, 3.8% and 0.0% in DNG group. The recurrence rate was less than 4% in both groups. Conclusion: The side effects were relatively affordable, and occurrence of side effects tended to be decreased with continuous administration. The long-term administration of EE/DRSP or DNG seem to be highly effective in preventing recurrence after surgery.

The Daegu Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation (DGMIF), which was established to support the development of new drugs and medical devices, consists of New Drug Development Center, Medical Device Development Center, Laboratory Animal Center, and Clinical Drug Manufacturing Center. Laboratory Animal Center (LAC) is a facility for mice, rats, rabbit, dogs, pigs, and monkeys for research. Regular medical checkups including blood tests as well as inspection, palpation examinations by attending veterinarian are conducted twice a year to guarantee health and welfare for dogs and pigs. Based on the results of the medical checkup, the health status of animals is checked and proper treatments are taken to ensure that the animals can be raised in a healthy and stable manner and to improve animal welfare. In this study, there were abnormal results by blood tests and physical examinations. However, these were short-term natural responses by experiments or transportation and all of them recovered when re-testing. Since there were no other abnormal animals, we consider that the dogs and pigs of DGMIF LAC were in good health. The DGMIF LAC provides researchers with high-quality animals for reproducible animal studying and try to contribute to the development of new drugs and medical device support with proper treatments of veterinary and stable husbandry managements.

군소의 중추신경계로부터 myomodulin A (MMA)과 myomodlin E (MME)의 정제에 대해 보고하고자 한다. 500마리 군소의 중추신경계를 산조건으로 추출한 후 4종류의 HPLC column system에 적용하여 두가지 신경성 펩타이드를 정제하였다. HPLC 분리과정에서 얻어진 모든 분획의 활성을 조사하기 위하여 bioassay system으로 진주담치 (Mytilis edulis)의 ABRM을 이용하였다. 최종 정제된 신경성 펩타이드는 Edman 분해법을 이용한 아미노산 서열 분석기, 질량분석기와 화학합성을 통해 완전한 일차구조를 밝힐 수 있었다. 정제한 MMA와 MME의 일차구조는 각각 Pro-Met-Ser-Met-Leu-Arg-Leu-NH₂(847.41 Da)과 Gly-Leu-Gln-Met-Leu-Arg-Leu-NH₂, (830.50 Da) 이었다. 또한 이들 합성 펩타이드는 진주담치의 ABRM에 대해 phasic contration의 조절활성을 나타내었다. This paper reports the purification of myomodulin A (MMA) and myomodulin E (MME) from the sea hare. The central nervous systems of 500 sea hare were extracted in an acidified solvent, after which four HPLC column systems were used to obtain pure peptides. The phasic contraction bioassay using a Mytilus edulis anterior byssus retractor muscle (ABRM) was applied to monitor all collected fractions. The pure peptides were submitted to Edman degradation based automated microsequencing. Mass spectrometry and chemical synthesis confirmed the sequence. The primary structures of MMA and MME were Pro-Met-Ser-Met-Leu-Arg-Leu-NH₂(847.41 Da) and Gly-Leu-Gln-Met-Leu-Arg-Leu-NH₂(830.50 Da), respectively. Synthetic peptides showed a modulating activity of phasic contraction in the ABRM of Mytilus edulis.
Histological and Genetic Characterization of True Hermaphroditism in Korean Pigs

True hermaphrodites are animals of equivocal sex in which both male and female gonads develop simultaneously. The frequency of true hermaphroditism is higher in pigs than in other domestic animals. Two Korean pigs were diagnosed with true hermaphroditism showing ovotestes, epididymes, penes, and uteri. Histomorphologically, the testicular tissues consisted of Sertoli cells that were devoid of spermatogenic germ cells and showed proliferation of interstitial cells. However, the uteri were of normal architecture and had well-developed uterine endometrial glands. The samples were 38, XX female karyotype without the sex-determining region Y (SRY) gene. Background: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of Helicobacter pylori status on pepsinogen (PG) concentration for atrophic gastritis and whether gastric atrophy based on the PG test would be improved after H. pylori eradication. Methods: We prospectively enrolled patients who would undergo upper endoscopy for dyspepsia. Clinical data including patient demographics, H. pylori infection status, and initial PGI and PGII concentration were collected. In patients who underwent H. pylori eradication, PGI and PGII concentration was re-checked after 6 months from the eradication. Results: We prospectively enrolled patients who would undergo upper endoscopy for dyspepsia. Clinical data including patient demographics, H. pylori infection status, and initial PGI and PGII concentration were collected. In patients who underwent H. pylori eradication, PGI and PGII concentration was re-checked after 6 months from the eradication. Conclusions: Serum PG concentration was associated with H. pylori infection status. Atrophic gastritis based on the PG test was improved after the H. pylori eradication. Serum PG I/II ratio could be potential biomarkers for H. pylori-infected gastric disease in Korea.
