      • A Study on the Correlation of Left Atrial Volume Change according to Left Ventricular Contraction in Atrial Fibrillation

        The purpose of this study was to increase accuracy and success rate of radiofrequency catheter ablation by analysis of left atrial volume change relative to left ventricular volume change and left atrial diameter change relative to left atrial volume change. 20 patients with normal heart rhythm were set as the control group, and 20 patients with diagnosed atrial fibrillation were set as the experimental group. The cardiac cycle was divided into 10 stages ranging from 0% to 90%, and left ventricular volume, left atrial volume, left atrial diameter, pulmonary vein diameter were measured for each group. the correlation between the left ventricular volume and the left atrial volume was analyzed, and the correlation between the left atrial volume and left atrial diameter was analyzed. The diameter of the pulmonary veins was measured. As a result of analyzing the correlation between left ventricular volume and left atrial volume through Spearman correlation, the control group showed a negative correlation.(P<0.001) The experimental group were not correlated.(P=0.075) As a result of analyzing the correlation between the left atrial volume and the left atrial diameter, both groups showed a positive correlation.(P<0.001) As a result of analyzing the diameter of the pulmonary vein by Wilcoxon signed-rank test, both groups showed a significant difference in the maximum diameter and the minimum diameter.(P<0.001) Because the volume and diameter of the left atrium in patients with atrial fibrillation change irregularly, the radiologist check all cardiac cycle and reconstruct to increase the accuracy and success rate of radiofrequency catheter ablation.

        Altered Regulation of Renal Acid Base Transporters in Response to Ammonium Chloride Loading in Rats

        The role of the kidney in combating metabolic acidosis has been a subject of considerable interest for many years. The present study was aimed to determine whether there is an altered regulation of renal acid base transporters in acute and chronic acid loading. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Metabolic acidosis was induced by administration of $NH_4Cl$ for 2 days (acute) and for 7days (chronic). The serum and urinary pH and bicarbonate were measured. The protein expression of renal acid base transporters [type 3 $Na^+/H^+$ exchanger (NHE3), type 1 $Na^+/{HCO_3}^-$ cotransporter (NBC1), Na-$K^+$ ATPase, $H^+$-ATPase, anion exchanger-1 (AE-1)] was measured by semiquantitative immunoblotting. Serum bicarbonate and pH were decreased in acute acid loading rats compared with controls. Accordingly, urinary pH decreased. The protein expression of NHE3, $H^+$-ATPase, AE-1 and NBC1 was not changed. In chronic acid loading rats, serum bicarbonate and pH were not changed, while urinary pH was decreased compared with controls. The protein expression of NHE3, $H^+$-ATPase was increased in the renal cortex of chronic acid loading rats. These results suggest that unaltered expression of acid transporters combined with acute acid loading may contribute to the development of acidosis. The subsequent increased expression of NHE3, $H^+$-ATPase in the kidney may play a role in promoting acid excretion in the later stage of acid loading, which counteract the development of metabolic acidosis.

      • Gene flow of GM pepper

        CMVP1 (cucumber mosaic virus pathotype 1) has been frequently occurring virus causing damage in pepper farms, and it is hard to control the outbreak due to lack of the genetic source resistant to this specific pathotype. Therefore, we have developed transgenic peppers tolerant of CMVP1 using a CP gene of CMVP0 pathogen. In order to fulfill the requirement of the biosafety assessment criteria, we have studied the horizontal gene flow from GM pepper to non-GM pepper by monitoring the transgene movement. If the pepper farms are located closely each other and the pollen moves from GM pepper to non-GM pepper, it would cause unintended fertilization. Therefore, a buffer zone to separate the cultivation regions is required to avoid the contamination of transgene. Previously, several data regarding the movement distance of pepper pollen were reported by judging the phenotypic change. However, no tool as a trace marker was available. The objective of this study was to assess the frequencies of gene flow from GM peppers to non-GM peppers in neighboring farms using the transgene of CP as a trace marker. The GM and non-GM peppers were cultivated in the isolated farm of Nongwoo Bio Co. (NW GM pepper field) and pepper fruits were collected from the NW GM pepper field as well as the neighboring pepper farms. The pepper seeds collected from the farms were planted and the massive PCR analysis was performed to answer the question how far the pollen of GM pepper migrates. The conclusive data based on the consecutive experiments for 6 years is that the gene flow by pollen movement did not occur in peppers that were separated each other over 30 m.

      • Age-Associated Changes in the Vascular Renin-Angiotensin System in Mice

        <P><I>Background</I>. This study evaluated whether the change in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is associated with arterial aging in mice.<I> Methods</I>. Histologic changes and expressions of transforming growth factor-<I>β</I> (TGF-<I>β</I>), collagen IV,<I> fibronectin</I>, angiotensin II (Ang II), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R), prorenin receptor (PRR), Mas receptor (MasR), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), NADPH oxidase 2 and oxidase 4 (Nox2 and Nox4), 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG),<I> 3-nitrotyrosine</I>, and superoxide dismutase 1 and dismutase 2 (SOD1 and SOD2) were measured in the thoracic aortas from 2-month-old, 12-month-old, and 24-month-old C57/BL6 mice.<I> Results</I>. Twenty-four-month-old mice showed significantly increased aortic media thickness and expressions of TGF-<I>β</I>, collagen IV, and fibronectin, compared to 2-month-old and 12-month-old mice. The expressions of PRR, ACE, and Ang II, and AT1R-positive area significantly increased, whereas expressions of ACE2 and MasR and AT2R-positive area decreased with age. The expressions of phosphorylated serine<SUP>1177</SUP>-eNOS, SOD1, and SOD2 decreased, and the 8-OHdG-positive area and the 3-nitrotyrosine-positive area increased with age. The expression of Nox2 significantly increased with age, but that of Nox4 did not change.<I> Conclusions</I>. The enhanced PRR-ACE-Ang II-AT1R axis and reduced ACE2-MasR axis were associated with arterial aging in mice. </P>

      • 월경전 불쾌기분장애가 식이패턴에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to identify the change of the dietary pattern, food craving in accordance with menstrual cycle among women with the premenstrual dysphoric disorder(PMDD) and women with no premenstrual symptoms(Non-PMS). The 24 subjects were divided by two groups, PMDD group and Non-PMS group. And the change of dietary pattern and food craving were measured for 4 weeks according to the menstrual cycle. The frequency of meal, the amount of meal and the change of palatability of meat intake, fatty food, carbonate drinks, fruit, confectionery and caffeine containing beverage were more significantly increased in luteal and menstrual phase than follicular phase without regard to PMDD group and Non-PMS group, but there were no statistically difference between groups. The change of palatability of vegetable & alcohol were no difference among the phase without regard to PMDD group and Non-PMS group, and there were no statistically difference between groups. Above the findings showed that the change of women's dietary pattern has connection with the change of menstrual cycle. It is considered that unconsidered variables in this study could be applied for the therapy of premenstrual symptom or management method in connection with variable related to menstrual cycle the systematic study is requested.

      • Hydroxycitrate, Carnitine 및 Capsaicin을 함유한 식이 보조제(3D-Relax Diet)의 체중 감량 효과

        The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of 3D-Relax Diet; a proprietary formation containing hydroxycitrate(233mg/g), carnitine(150mg/g); and capsaicin (150mg/g); on body weight, % body fat, fat mass, lean body mass, Resting Metabolic Rate(RMR), body circumference, skinfold thickness, serum glucose and lipid level. Nineteen female college students participated in this 4 weeks weight control program. All subjects were randomly assigned to the Sang sik(S) group or Sang sik & 3D-Relax(3D) group. Mean energy intake of 3D group was l,523.1±300.2 ㎉(carbohydrate: 66.3%, protein: 18.7%, fat: 15.0%) and S group consumed 1,464.8±142.1 ㎉(carbohydrate: 65.1%, protein: 19.0%, fat: 15.9%) during program. The 3D group lost 3.1±1.3 kg of body weight, 2.5±l.4 kg of fat mass, 0.6±1.2 kg of lean body mass and 16.8±183.3 ㎉/d of RMR and the S group lost 1.8±1.0 kg of body weight, 1.1±1.1 kg of fat mass, 0.8±0.3 kg of lean body mass and 19.1±181.9 ㎉/d of RMR. There was no significant differences in the loss of lean body mass and RMR between two groups, however, the total body weight and the fat mass were significantly decreased in the 3D group compared to the S group(p<0.05). The 3D group experienced a significant reduced hip size, total-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, however, the change of these between groups were not significantly different. There were no differences in the change of body circumference, skinfold thickness, serum glucose and lipid. These results suggest that the intake of 3D-Relax Diet(hydroxycitrate, carnitine, and capsaicin) during the weight control program decreased energy intake, fat intake and total body weight especially fat mass and those effects are presumably linked to the prevention of RMR decline and the inhibitory effects on lipogenesis.

      • Surface Morphology Control of Polymer Films by Electron Irradiation and Its Application to Superhydrophobic Surfaces

        <P>A simple and controllable one-step method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces on poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films is developed on the base of electron irradiation. When the thickness of PTFE films is higher than the penetration depth of electron beams, electrical charging occurs at the surface of the films because of the imbalance between the accumulation of incident electrons and the emission of secondary electrons. Local inhomogeneity of charge distribution due to this electrical charging results in the nonuniform decomposition of PTFE molecular bonds. As electron fluence increases, surface morphology and surface roughness of the films are dramatically changed. An extremely rough surface with micrometer-sized pores is produced on the surface of PTFE films by electron irradiation at a fluence higher than 2.5 × 10<SUP>17</SUP> cm<SUP>–2</SUP>.Because of high surface roughness, the irradiated PTFE films exhibit superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (CA) greater than 150° at fluences ranging from 4 × 10<SUP>17</SUP> to 1 × 10<SUP>18</SUP> cm<SUP>–2</SUP>. The surface morphology and corresponding water CA can be controlled by simply changing the electron fluence.         In this paper, a re-adhesion control scheme is proposed for 1C2M propulsion system of TTX. The possibility of slip between wheel and rail in railway system is increasing because of the tendency of high speed and a climatic change. This slip results in the decrease of adhesive effort between this wheel and rail, so the control strategy of traction effort which can reduce the speed promptly and make most use of the maximum adhesive force is absolutely necessary. This paper describes the modeling of the TTX system, and this system is verified by the simulation.

        Usefulness of Skin Explants for Histologic Analysis after Fractional Photothermolysis

        Background: Fractional laser resurfacing treatment has been extensively investigated and is widely used. However, the mechanism underlying its effects is poorly understood because of the ethical and cosmetic problems of obtaining skin biopsies required to study the changes after laser treatment. Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of human skin explants for the investigation of fractional photothermolysis. Methods: Full-thickness discarded skin was treated in 4 ways: no treatment (control), fractional carbon dioxide laser, fractional Er:YAG laser, and fractional 1,550-nm erbium- doped fiber laser. Both treated and non-treated skin samples were cultured ex vivo at the air-medium interface for 7 days. Frozen tissue was sectioned and stained with hematoxylin & eosin for histologic examination and nitro blue tetrazolium chloride for viability testing. Results: Skin explants cultured for up to 3 days exhibited histologic changes similar to those observed in in vivo studies, including microscopic treatment zones surrounded by a thermal coagulation zone, re-epithelialization, and formation of microscopic epidermal necrotic debris. However, the explant structure lost its original form within 7 days of culture. The viability of skin explants was maintained for 3 days of culture but was also lost within 7 days. Conclusion: The skin explant model may be a useful tool for investigating the immediate or early changes following fractional photothermolysis, but further improvements are required to evaluate the long-term and dermal changes.         2003년 국내 중증급성호흡기증후군 진료 현황 및 문제점 분석

        목적 : 2002년 말 중국에서 SARS가 발생한 이후 국내에서도 2003년 10월까지 총 3명의 추정환자, 17명의 의심환자가 보고되었다. 향후 추가적인 SARS의 유행이 우려되는 상황에서, 그간의 SARS 환자 진료에 있어서의 실질적인 준비사항, 진료 현황 등에 대한 조사를 통해 문제점을 파악하여, 향후 더 나은 대비가 될 수 있도록 개선점을 제시하고자 하였다. 재료 및 방법 : SARS로 의심되는 환자를 진료 경험이 있는 병원의료진을 대상으로 2003년 10월에 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문에는 SARS 환자 진료 시의 실질적인 조치, 진료 현황, 병실, 응급실 및 외래에서의 격리 시설과 준비사항, 보건당국의 관리와 지원에 관한 사항을 포함하였다. 결과 : 대상이 되는 22개 병원 중 17개(17/22, 77.2%) 병원이 설문에 응하였다. SARS 환자를 위한 격리실은 응급실, 외래, 일반병실 및 중환자실에서 각각 9개(9/17, 52.9%), 5개(5/17, 29.4%), 15개(15/16, 93.7%), 4개(4/16, 25%) 병원에서 음압처리가 되어있지 않은 일인실 혹은 다인실이 사용되었고, 1개(1/16, 6.3%) 병원에서만 일반병실에서 음압격리실이 운영되었다. 입원환자의 진찰 시 개인보호구의 착용은 거의 모든 의료기관에서 이루어졌다. 보건당국에서 SARS지정병원의 시설 등을 사전에 확인한 곳은 1곳(1/12, 8.3%)이였고, 14개 병원(14/15, 93.3%)에서는 보건당국에 의뢰한 검사결과를 통하 받지 못하였다. 결론 : 의료기관에서 SARS 환자용 격리실뿐만 아니라 기존의 격리실 설비 등이 미흡하였으며, 특히 중환자실 및 외래의 준비가 더욱 부족하였다. 보건당국의 의료기관에 대한 종합적인 지원이 부족하였고, 병원과의 원활한 연계가 잘 이루어지지 않았다. SARS 만이 아닌 격리를 필요로 하는 질환의 적절한 진료를 위해 향후 병원 시설의 정비와 정부차원에서의 보다 구체적이고 실질적인 대책마련이 필요하다. Background : There was an worldwide outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) originated from China in late 2002. During that period three cases of suspected SARS and 17 cases of probable SARS were reported in Korea. With the concerns about the reemergence of SARS-coV transmission, it is important to be prepared for any possibility. So, this study is aimed to analysis the past measures in managing SARS and propose the amendatory plans to improve the preparedness. Materials & Methods : Questionnaires were collected among clinicians with any experience in managing the probable or suspected SARS cases in Oct. 2003. 17 out of 22 hospitals responded to the questionnaire. The contents in the questionnaire were practical activities, personal equipments, response plans, isolation facilities in emergency centers, outpatient clinics, general wards and intensive care units, and relationship with the public health department. Results : The dedicated isolation rooms in emergency centers, outpatient clinics, general wards, and intensive care units were prepared in 9 (9/17, 52.9%), 5 (5/17, 29.4%), 15 (15/16, 93.7%), and 4 (4/16, 25.0%) hospitals, respectively. Except for one hospital that newly made negative pressure room for SARS, single or multi-bed rooms without airborne infection control were used in all the other hospitals. The personal precaution principles were kept quite well in general wards. Before the designation of SARS hospital by the public health department prior evalution to see if the hospital was suitable for managing SARS was conducted in only 1 (1/12, 8.3%) hospital. The results of laboratory diagnosis were reported back in 1 (1/15, 6.6%) hospital. Conclusions : The isolation facilities which can control airborne infection were almost deficient not only for SARS but also for other respiratory transmissible diseases. For the infection control of transmissible diseases including SARS, more investment is needed on medical facilities and comprehensive support from the public health department required.
