Objective: The lumbar spinal canal can be devided into the central zone and the lateral zone. The divisions of the lateral zone are the subarticular, the foraminal, and the extraforaminal zone. A common causes of the operation for the spinal stenosis are related to the association with the spondylolisthesis and the central stenosis. There is a paucity of data, however, regarding the operative intervention in the lateral zone stenosis(LZS). Our aim was to analyze the surgical result by the anatomical type and the operative method. Methods: 72 patients of LZS excepting the association with the spondyolisthesis have been operated by six neurosurgeons of our hospital from 30th April, 1994 through 30th September, 2002. The patients had been interviewed about surgical result through telephone by third party persons. The surgical results were analyzed by the four score rating system: ① medication, ② ADL(Ability of daily living), ③ the degree of improvement, ④ the degree of satisfaction. Results: Among 72 patients, there were 25 males and 47 females. The age group of the patients were in their thirties(1), forties(9), fifties(21), sixties(36) and seventies(5). Surgical methods were used on decompression(22), posterior lumbar interbody fusion(PLIF) with cage(1) and PLIF with transpedicular screw fixation system(49). The types of stenosis were subarticular(24), foraminal(16) and extraforaminal(30) and double crush(2). The overall surgical results were Excellent(18), Good(34), Fair(19), and Poor(1). The Non-success rate according to the methods of surgery were decompression(34.8%), PLIF with transpedicular fixation system(24.4%). The overall success rate was(53/72: 73.6%). The success rate according to the types were subarticular(17/24: 70.8%), extraforaminal(21/30: 70%), and foraminal(12/16: 75%). Conclusion: It is suggested that the result was more favorable on the cases of lateral zone stenosis operated with PLIF and transpedicular fixation system. According to the method used, the success rate of decompression was worse than PLIF with transpedicular fixation system.

In a search for plant extracts with in vivo antifungal activity for plant diseases, we found that the methanol extract of Myristica malabarica fruit rinds effectively suppressed the development of several plant diseases. The methanol extract exhibited potent 1-day protective activity against rice blast, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust and red pepper anthracnose. It also showed 7-day and 4-day protective activities against the plant diseases. Three antifungal resorcinols were isolated from the methanol extract of M. malabarica fruit rinds and identified as malabaricones A(MA), B(MB), and C(MC). Inhibitory activity of the three resorcinols against mycelial growth of plant pathogenic fungi varied according to compound and target species. All three compounds effectively reduced the development of rice blast, wheat leaf rust and red pepper anthracnose. In addition, MC was highly active for reducing the development of tomato late blight. This is the first report on the antifungal activities of malabaricones against filamentous fungi.
Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor as Clinical Application Feasibility in Canine Intractable Tumor Diseases

A tyrosine kinase is an enzyme that can transfer a phosphate group from ATP to a protein in a cell. Itfunctions as an "on" or "off" switch in many cellular functions. This study aims to show that the actions of growthfactors associated with PDGFR-α, PDGFR-β, VEGFR-2, c-KIT, and c-ABL, which are used in veterinary medicine, are expressed in canine intractable tumors. This study used archival cases of canine paraganglioma, gastrointestinaladenocarcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and renal cell carcinoma. Tissues had been immunohistochemical analysis. The antibodies used were PDGFR-α, PDGFR-β, c-kit, VEGFR-2, and c-Abl. PDGFR-α was expressed only in HCC,and PDGFR-β was expressed in all tumors. VEGFR was also only expressed in HCC, and c-KIT has been expressedin HCC, paraganglioma, and small intestinal adenocarcinoma. c-Abl was expressed in all cancers, but was weaklyexpressed in paraganglioma, while more than moderately expressed in other tissues. In conclusion, this study investigatedhow TKIs used in human medicine can be applied to canine intractable tumors, through immunohistochemistry. Theresults indicate that there may be an application for TKIs in treating canine intractable tumors.

Background: Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is an uncommon condition characterized by focal or diffuse eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract. It is usually associated with non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal distension. Case History: We present a case of eosinophilic colitis with normal-appearing colonic mucosa as an unusual cause of chronic watery diarrhea. Results: It can be overlooked by gastroenterologists because the incidence of eosinophilic colitis is very rare and normal- appearing colonic mucosa is frequently observed in patients with eosinophilic colitis. Conclusion: Endoscopic biopsy should not hesitate to perform be considered when colonic mucosa appears to be normal but we cannot rule out eosinophilic colitis which responds well to steroid therapy. Overexpression of Zinc Finger Protein of Capsicum annuum(PIF1) in Tobacco Enhances Cold Tolerance

Plants encounter various stresses from their surrounding environment, such as low temperature, drought and high salinity. Thus the plant responds to abiotic stress such as cold and drought through a range of different strategies including physiological and biochemical processes that are usually mediated by up-regulation of the expression of stress regulated genes. Zinc finger proteins play a role in abiotic stress tolerance such as cold, dehydration and salt. As one way to approach to cold defense mechanism in plants, we previously identified a gene for zinc finger protein (PIF1) from hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) as cold inducible using cDNA microarray analysis coupled with Northern blot analysis. We previously showed that the PIF1 gene was induced strongly by cold stress, slightly by ABA. The PIF1 gene was engineered under control of CaMV 35S promoter for constitutive expression in transgenic tobacco plants by Ti-plasmid of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The resulting PIF1 transgenic tobacco plants showed significantly increased cold stress resistance. In addition, all PIF1 transgenic plants showed no visible phenotypic alteration compared to wild type plants. These results suggest the biological role of PIF1 in plant stress tolerances.

The authors report the problems of treatment in 37 consecutive cerebral arteriovenous malformations(AVM's) who underwent embolization, operation, combined treatment, or conservative care. The preoperative embolization is an integral part of the multidisciplinary treatment protocol for patients with cerebral AVM's. Life threatening intracerebral hematoma caused by bleeding from AVM's will be managed effectively with stereotactic Urokinase irrigation for urgently reducing the increased intracranial pressure and getting a time to change emergent to elective surgery. We also discussed the problems along the managements of cerebral AVM's.
