Atrial conduction times and left atrial mechanical functions and their relation with diastolic func-tion in prediabetic patients

( Naile Eris Gudul ),( Turgut Karabag ),( Muhammet Rasit Sayin ),( Taner Bayraktaroglu ),( Mustafa Aydin ) 대한내과학회 2017 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.32 No.2

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate atrial conduction times and left atrial mechanical functions, the noninvasive predictors of atrial fibrillation, in prediabetic patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Methods: Study included 59 patients (23 males, 36 females; mean age 52.5 ± 10.6 years) diagnosed with IFG or IGT by the American Diabetes Association criteria, and 43 healthy adults (22 males, 21 females; mean age 48.5 ± 12.1 years). Conventional and tissue Doppler echocardiography were performed. The electromechanical delay parameters were measured from the onset of the P wave on the surface electrocardiogram to the onset of the atrial systolic wave on tissue Doppler imaging from septum, lateral, and right ventricular annuli. The left atrial volumes were calculated by the disk method. Left atrial mechanical functions were calculated. Results: The mitral E/A and E`/A` ratios measured from the lateral and septal annuli were significantly lower in the prediabetics compared to the controls. The interatrial and left atrial electromechanical delay were significantly longer in prediabetic group compared to the controls. Left atrial active emptying volume (LAAEV) and fraction (LAAEF) were significantly higher in the prediabetics than the controls. LAAEV and LAAEF were significantly correlated with E/A, lateral and septal E`/A`. Conclusions: In the prediabetic patients, the atrial conduction times and P wave dispersion on surface electrocardiographic were longer before the development of overt diabetes. In addition, the left atrial mechanical functions were impaired secondary to a deterioration in the diastolic functions in the prediabetic patients.

Influence of Compaction Method and Effort on Electrical Resistivity and Volume Change of Cohesive Soils

Bashar Alibrahim,Eris Uygar 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.7

Engineered fills are enhanced by compaction to reduce compressibility and permeability. In-situ application of shallow densification methods involve static method with the use of compaction rollers. However, the compaction characteristics of soils are traditionally obtained in the laboratory using dynamic compaction method. Due to the difference in the mechanism of the two compaction methods, there is a variation in the soil fabric formed, quantification of which is scarce. In this research, influence of compaction effort and (dynamic and static) compaction methods on swell and compressibility of two soils of diverse geological formation are investigated. An indirect means of measuring microstructural changes in specimen characteristics using electrical resistivity is also investigated. Results indicate that the compaction effort and the method of compaction have a significant impact on the electrical resistivity and swelling potential. The yield stress of the compacted specimens is also influenced. However, the compressibility and rebound behaviour upon unloading, are obtained to be independent of both the compaction effort and the method of compaction.

      • When humanoid robots become human-like interaction partners: Corepresentation of robotic actions.

        Stenzel, Anna,Chinellato, Eris,Bou, Maria A. Tirado,del Pobil, Á,ngel P.,Lappe, Markus,Liepelt, Roman American Psychological Association 2012 JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY-HUMAN PERCEPTIO Vol.38 No.5

In human-human interactions, corepresenting a partner's actions is crucial to successfully adjust and coordinate actions with others. Current research suggests that action corepresentation is restricted to interactions between human agents facilitating social interaction with conspecifics. In this study, we investigated whether action corepresentation, as measured by the social Simon effect (SSE), is present when we share a task with a real humanoid robot. Further, we tested whether the believed humanness of the robot's functional principle modulates the extent to which robotic actions are corepresented. We described the robot to participants either as functioning in a biologically inspired human-like way or in a purely deterministic machine-like manner. The SSE was present in the human-like but not in the machine-like robot condition. These findings suggest that humans corepresent the actions of nonbiological robotic agents when they start to attribute human-like cognitive processes to the robot. Our findings provide novel evidence for top-down modulation effects on action corepresentation in human-robot interaction situations.

Reattachment of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment via Fibrin Tissue Adhesive

        Erdinc Aydin,Erdem Eris,Levent Kazanci,Osman Murat Uyar 대한안과학회 2021 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.35 No.3

Purpose: To manage reattachment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment using tissue adhesive (fibrin glue) in five patients. Methods: Five eyes of five patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were treated with 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy and the application of fibrin glue (Tisseel Lyo) into the break under air without laser photocoagulation or cryopexy. Results: The median age of patients was 64 (range, 46–82) years, and the median duration of symptoms was 15 (range, 7–60) days. Three eyes had inferior and two had superior rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Successful retinal reattachment was achieved in all cases and maintained during the followıng 10 to 24 months. The median best-corrected visual acuity improved from 2 / 100 preoperatively to a Snellen visual acuity of 20 / 50 by 6 months postoperatively. No postoperative complications were detected during the follow-up period. Conclusions: Excellent adhesive effects of fibrin glue with respect to sealing retinal tears with no side effects were seen in our study. With further prospective studies, this technique could be an alternative method to conventional retinopexy.

The Activities of Catalase and Ascorbate Peroxidase in Olive (Olea europaea L. cv. Gemlik) under Low Temperature Stress

        Asuman Cansev,Hatice Gulen,Atilla Eris 한국원예학회 2011 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.52 No.2

In this study, one-year-old shoots of the olive (Olea europaea L.) cv. Gemlik were tested at artificial low temperatures (4, -5℃, -10℃, and -20℃) every month for two years. For low temperature treatment, the degree of cell membrane injury in leaves and barks was determined by ion leakage method. In addition, with regard to antioxidative defense mechanism, activities of catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) enzymes were determined. Leaf and bark tissues subjected to 4℃ and -5℃ injured to a limited extent in all months. However, more than 50% injury occurred by temperatures equal to or colder than -10℃ treatments depending on the season. For -10℃ and -20℃ treatments, the lowest and the highest injury in leaf and bark tissues were detected during winter and summer seasons, respectively. We determined in this study that CAT and APX enzyme activities are generally higher during fall and winter compared with those in summer. On the other hand, CAT and APX enzyme activities started increasing during fall along with a decreasing freezing injury while the activities of these enzymes decreased to some extent during winter when freezing injury was the lowest. In addition, while CAT activity decreased with low temperature treatments, APX activity did not change until -5℃ treatment but decreased with decreasing temperatures starting from -10℃ depending on the month the tissue was obtained. In conclusion, olive plant shows considerable tolerance to low temperatures that are achieved after daily gradual decreases by increasing cell membrane stability through complicated mechanisms including antioxidative enzyme metabolisms. In addition, APX may be more effective in maintaining cold-hardiness of olive compared with CAT.

      • The Value of Preoperative CA 125 Levels in Prediction of Myometrial Invasion in Patients with Early-stage Endometrioid-type Endometrial Cancer

Atguden, Zeynep,Yildiz, Askin,Aksut, Hayri,Yalcin, Serenat Eris,Yalcin, Yakup,Uysal, Dilek,Yetimalar, Hakan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.2

Aim: To evaluate the relationship between pre-operative CA-125 levels and myometrial invasion in patients with early-stage endometrioid-type endometrial cancer. Materials and Methods: Two-hundred and sixty patients were diagnosed with endometrial cancer between January 2007 and December 2012. Of these, 136 patients with stage 1 endometrioid histologic-type and documented pre-operative serum CA-125 levels were included in the study. Age, preoperative CA-125 level, histologic grade, surgical grade, and presence of deep myometrial invasion were recorded. Additionally, 16, 20, and 35 IU/ml cutoff values were used and compared to evaluate the relationship between pre-operative CA-125 levels and myometrial invasion. Results: The average serum CA-125 level was $35.4{\pm}36.7$ in patients with deep myometrial invasion, and $21.5{\pm}35.8$ in cases without deep myometrial invasion. The relationship between the presence of deep myometrial invasion and CA-125 cut-off values (16, 20, 35 IU/ml) was statistically significant, although the correlation was weak (p<0.05). When the relationship between 16, 20 and 35 IU/ml CA-125 cut-off values and the presence of deep myometrial invasion was studied, specifity and sensitivity values were identified as: 0.60-0.68 for 16 IU/ml; 0.73-0.48 for 20 IU/ml; and 0.89-0.33 for 35 IU/ml. The sensitivity of 16 IU/ml cut-off value was higher when compared to other values. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that preoperative serum CA-125 values maybe used as a predictive test in patients with early stage endometrioid-type endometrium cancer, and as a prognostic factor alone. Further studies should be conducted to identify different CA-125 cut-off values in patients with low risk endometrial cancer.

      • Outcome of Daily Cisplatin with Thoracic Chemoradiotherapy in Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Patients with Comorbid Disorders: a Pilot Study

Kiziltan, Huriye Senay,Bayir, Ayse Gunes,Tastekin, Didem,Coban, Ganime,Eris, Ali Hikmet,Aydin, Teoman,Mayadagli, Alparslan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: Lung cancer is the most common cancer in males worldwide. The principal mode of treatment in the early stage of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is surgery. However, five-year survival is only about 15% for all stages. The aim is to investigate the effect of daily low dose cisplatin concurrently with radiation therapy in advanced NSCLC patients with poor performance status. Materials and Methods: Ten patients diagnosed as inoperable Stage IIIB NSCLC with comorbid disease were assessed retrospectively in Bezmialem Vakif University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology, between 2011 to 2013. ECOG performance status was between 3 and 4. Cisplatin was administered at $6mg/m^2$ daily, for 5 days a week concurrently with radiotherapy using 160-200 cGy daily fractions, 54 Gy being the lowest and 63 Gy being the highest dose. Results: Complete response at the primary tumour site was obtained in 20% patients. Grade I esophagitis was seen 70 percent of patients, and the grade II haematological toxicity rate was 20 %. Median survival time was 7 months. Conclusions: Median survival time was reasonable, despite the patients ECOG performance status of 3-4, which is similar to groups even without comorbid disorders in comparison to other published papers in the literature. Acceptable toxicity, high response rates and quality of life of patients are the other favourable features.

      • A Hierarchical System for a Distributed Representation of the Peripersonal Space of a Humanoid Robot

        Antonelli, Marco,Gibaldi, Agostino,Beuth, Frederik,Duran, Angel J.,Canessa, Andrea,Chessa, Manuela,Solari, Fabio,del Pobil, Angel P.,Hamker, Fred,Chinellato, Eris,Sabatini, Silvio P. IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on autonomous mental development Vol.6 No.4

Reaching a target object in an unknown and unstructured environment is easily performed by human beings. However, designing a humanoid robot that executes the same task requires the implementation of complex abilities, such as identifying the target in the visual field, estimating its spatial location, and precisely driving the motors of the arm to reach it. While research usually tackles the development of such abilities singularly, in this work we integrate a number of computational models into a unified framework, and demonstrate in a humanoid torso the feasibility of an integrated working representation of its peripersonal space. To achieve this goal, we propose a cognitive architecture that connects several models inspired by neural circuits of the visual, frontal and posterior parietal cortices of the brain. The outcome of the integration process is a system that allows the robot to create its internal model and its representation of the surrounding space by interacting with the environment directly, through a mutual adaptation of perception and action. The robot is eventually capable of executing a set of tasks, such as recognizing, gazing and reaching target objects, which can work separately or cooperate for supporting more structured and effective behaviors.
