Heme oxygenase-1 induced by desoxo-narchinol-A attenuated the severity of acute pancreatitis via blockade of neutrophil infiltration

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has an anti-inflammatory action in acute pancreatitis (AP). However, its mechanism of action and natural compounds/drugs to induce HO-1 in pancreas are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the regulatory mechanisms of HO-1 during AP using desoxo-narchinol-A (DN), the natural compound inducing HO-1 in the pancreas. Female C57/BL6 Mice were intraperitoneally injected with supramaximal concentrations of cerulein (50 μg/kg) hourly for 6 h to induce AP. DMSO or DN was administered intraperitoneally, then mice were sacrificed 6 h after the final cerulein injection. Administration of DN increased pancreatic HO-1 expression through activation of activating protein-1, mediated by mitogen-activated protein kinases. Furthermore, DN treatment reduced the pancreatic weight-to-body weight ratio as well as production of digestive enzymes and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Inhibition of HO-1 by tin protoporphyrin IX abolished the protective effects of DN on pancreatic damage. Additionally, DN treatment inhibited neutrophil infiltration into the pancreas via regulation of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 2 (CXCL2) by HO-1. As medical technology progresses rapidly, there is a rise in the average age along with the Korean dietary lifestyle becoming more westernized, which leads to an increase in the number of vascular disease patients in Korea. Thus, we need to manage the medical information of a disease systematically in order to diagnose and treat constructively. However, since there has been no standardized method of man agement to date, a great deal of information could not be properly utilized nor studied. Therefore, the departments of Cardiology, Radiology and Neurology of Samsung Seoul Hospital recently got together to develop an information management system called the Vascular Data System. This program was developed to be run on win98 O/S, upper Pentium Ⅲ, and upper 128 MB Memory, and its source code is Dephi 4.0. It was configured for the user to set the configurations as well as do a variety of search and analysis. If this program were to be updated continuously, it may be used extensively as well as in various parts of clinical research activities.

Induction of heme oxygenase-1 protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an anti-oxidant enzyme normally upregulated in response to oxidant injury. Here we determined the role of HO-1 in podocyte apoptosis in glomeruli of streptozotocin-treated rats and in immortalized mouse podocytes cultured in media containing normal or high glucose. HO-1 expression, its activity, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 protein, and active caspase-3 fragments were all significantly higher in isolated glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. These increases were inhibited by zinc protoporphyrin treatment of the rats or by HO-1 siRNA treatment of the podocytes in culture. The number of apoptotic cells was also significantly increased in the glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. Inhibition of HO-1 accentuated the increase in apoptotic cells both in vivo and in vitro. Our findings suggest that HO-1 expression protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions.

만성 견비통에 대한 동씨침 치료의 무작위 대조군의 임상 연구

Objectives : To observe the effect of acupuncture treatment in chronic shoulder pain patients. Methods : 36 voluntary patients were randomly assigned to an acupuncture treatment group(E GrouP, n=18) and a control group(C GrouP, n=18). The E Group patients received acupuncture treatment on LI_(15), TE_(14), GB_(21) and Master Dong's acupuncture points, Shin-gwan and Gyun-joong, twice a week for four weeks. The C Group patients received no treatment. All patients in both groups were instructed to practise self exercise in their daily lives. Evaluations were made at baseline and after four weeks of study. The Constant Shoulder Assessment(CSA), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index(SPADI) and the patient's subjective pain was measured by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). The obtained data was analyzed. Results '. The E Group showed significant(p<0.05) improvement in CSA, SPADI and VAS after four weeks of treatment. The C Group showed significant(p<0.05) improvement in CSA, but the change of SPADI and VAS was insignificant(P>0.05). CSA and SPADI of E Group significantly(p<0.05) improved compared to the C GrouP, but the difference of VAS change in the two groups was insignificant(p>0.05). Conclusions : Four weeks of acupuncture treatment significantly improved CSA, SPADI and VAS. The improvement of CSA and SPADI was significant(p<0.05) compared to untreated patients.

The aim of this paper is to survey the meaning of "Chi Wu Lun", the subject matter of Chapter II in Chuang-tzu. According to the traditional concept, some scholars assert Chi Wu Lun means "all things are the same afterer all", and the others assert that it means "all the opposed concepts become the same after all." The author has got the following conclusion. Many different concepts are derived from the fact that all things are the different other things. If we find all things are the same after all, we are able to perceive that different other concepts become the same in the long run. In this viewpoint, it is known that the two concepts are connected each other in Chi Wu Lun Chuang Tzu suggested.

주근단공의 조건에 따른 Root ZX의 정확성 평가

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of Root ZX (J. Morita Corp.) according to the location of major foramen and open apex. Materials and Methods: 81 mandibular premolars with mature apices were selected. After access preparation, 27 teeth were instrumented to simulate open apices. 54 teeth were classified according to location of major foramen under surgical microscope (x16). The file was fixed at the location of apical constriction by Root ZX using glass ionomer cement. The apical 4 mm of the apex was exposed and photo was taken and the distance from file tip to the major foramen was measured by calibrating metal ruler on graph paper. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Scheffe test at p < 0.05 level. Results: mean distance from file tip to major foramen was 0.308 mm in Tip foramen group (Ⅰ), 0.519 mm in Lateral foramen group (Ⅱ) and 0.932 mm in open apex group (Ⅲ). Root ZX located apical constriction accurately within ± 0.5 mm in group Ⅰ of 85.71%, in group Ⅱ of 59.09%, and in group Ⅲ of 33.33%. There was a statistically significant difference between group Ⅰ and Ⅲ (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Root ZX located apical constriction accurately regardless of location of major foramen. However, Root ZX couldn't find it in open apex. Clinicians have to use a combination of methods to determine an appropriate working length at open apex. It may be more successful than relying on just electronic apes locator. (Restor Dent Endoe 2012;37(2):68-73)

The study reviews the current changes in the Korean education. It identifies constructivism as the change agent for the classrooms. Students learn more when the practices are characterized as child-centered, experiential, social, constructivist, and challenging learning environment. Thus, the recent educational reform have been focused on setting up such learning environment that enhance student's learning in the classroom. These changes can be made only by the classroom teachers' paradigm-shift in teaching-learning practices form objectivist to constructivist. The study reviews constructivism's philosophy in the teaching-leaning practices. The constructivist advocates that the learning is a process of knowledge construction. In constructivistic learning envionment, larning is also knowledge-dependent, and highly tuned to the situation in which it takes place. Thus, the constructivistic learning should be occurred in learner-centered, knowledge constructed learning environment. For better education, there should be as many teaching-learning methods as needed for each learning settings. If educators not changed their philosophical orientation in education from objectivism to constructivism, there will be no actual changes in the classrooms. There should be a paradigm-shift in teaching and learning from objectivism to constructivism. Therefore, this paper attempted to introduce the Constructivist Learning Model(CLM) for Improving Science Education.
