Objectives : To observe the effect of acupuncture treatment on Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging(DITI) in frozen shoulder patients. Methods : 17 voluntary patients received acupuncture treatment on LI15, TE14, GB21 and Master Dong's acupuncture points, Shin-gwan and Gyun-joong, twice a week for 4 weeks. The patients were instructed to practice self exercise during their daily lives. Evaluations were made before treatment, after 1 week of treatment, after 2 weeks, 3 weeks and after 4 weeks of treatment. Constant Shoulder Assessment(CSA), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index(SPADI), Range of Motion(ROM) and the patient's satisfaction concerning the treatment was measured by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). DITI was measured before treatment and after 4weeks of treatment. The obtained data was analyzed. Results : CSA, SPADI, VAS, adduction and extension showed significant(p<0.05) improvement. Abduction and flexion both improved after 4 weeks of treatment, but the improvement was statistically insignificant(p>0.05). DITI showed improvement but the improvement was insignificant(p>0.05). Conclusion : 4 weeks of acupuncture treatment significantly improved CSA, SPADI, VAS, adduction and extension in frozen shoulder patients(p<0.05). The improvement of abduction and flexion after 4 weeks of acupuncture treatment was insignificant(p>0.05). DITI results improved after 4 weeks of acupuncture treatment. But the change of thermal difference was insignificant(p>0.05).

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) can be compensated through the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act. We looked at the characteristics of WMSDs in worker’s compensation records and the epidemiological investigation reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI). Based on the records of compensation, the number of cases for WMSDs decreased from 4,532 in 2003 to 1,954in 2007. However the proportion of WMSDs among the total approved occupational diseases increased from 49.6% in 2003 to 76.5% in 2007, and the total cost of WMSDs increased from 105.3 billion won in 2004 to 163.3 billion won in 2007. The approval rate of WMSDs by the OSHRI accounted for 65.6%. Ergonomic and clinical characteristics were associated with the approval rate; however, the degenerative changes had a minimal affect. This result was in discordance between OSHRI and the Korea Workers’ Compensation &Welfare Service. We presumed that there were perceptional gaps in work-relatedness interpretation that resulted from the inequality of information in ergonomic analyses. We propose to introduce ergonomic analysis to unapproved WMSDs cases and discuss those results among experts that will be helpful to form a consensus among diverse groups.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of unilateral use of a blood reinfusion device in one-stage bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Materials and Methods: We carried out a retrospective cohort study on 100 patients having one-stage bilateral TKA. In 50 of these patients (study group), a blood reinfusion device was applied on one knee and a standard suction drain on the other, and they were compared with 50 matched controls who received bilateral suction drains (control group). The hemoglobin (Hb) level, the hematocrit (Hct) and the platelet count were checked preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, and the third and seventh days postoperatively. The total drain output and the amount of allogeneic blood transfusion were also compared. Results: There were no significant differences in the total drain output and required amount of allogeneic blood transfusions between groups (p>0.05). However, the study group had significantly lower Hb and Hct values by the first day postoperatively and significantly lower platelet count values by the third day postoperatively than the control group (p<0.05).Conclusions: Compared with use of bilateral suction drains, unilateral use of reinfusion device was not advantageous in reducing allogeneic transfusion in one-stage bilateral TKA.
Acupuncture for Management of Balance Impairment in a Patient with Bipolar Disorder
김건형,김재규,양기영,이병렬,노승희 사단법인약침학회 2013 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.6 No.1
A case is reported of unexplained unilateral thigh muscle atrophy and frequent falling with poor response to conventional conservative treatments in a patient with bipolar disorder who self-selected acupuncture treatment as a last resort. The patient experienced gradual improvements in lower extremity weakness and fewer falls during the 8-month treatment. No adverse event or aggravation of the bipolar disorder was observed. These outcomes suggest that acupuncture may be a feasible adjunct for reducing falling and restoring postural balances in patients with bipolar disorder.
