        Shell evolution of <i>N</i> = 40 isotones towards <sup>60</sup>Ca: First spectroscopy of <sup>62</sup>Ti

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Excited states in the N = 40 isotone <SUP>62</SUP>Ti were populated via the <SUP>63</SUP>V ( p , 2 p ) <SUP>62</SUP>Ti reaction at ∼200 MeV/nucleon at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using <I>γ</I>-ray spectroscopy. The energies of the 2 1 + → 0 gs + and 4 1 + → 2 1 + transitions, observed here for the first time, indicate a deformed <SUP>62</SUP>Ti ground state. These energies are increased compared to the neighboring <SUP>64</SUP>Cr and <SUP>66</SUP>Fe isotones, suggesting a small decrease of quadrupole collectivity. The present measurement is well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations based on effective interactions, while ab initio and beyond mean-field calculations do not yet reproduce our findings. The shell-model calculations for <SUP>62</SUP>Ti show a dominant configuration with four neutrons excited across the N = 40 gap. Likewise, they indicate that the N = 40 island of inversion extends down to Z = 20 , disfavoring a possible doubly magic character of the elusive <SUP>60</SUP>Ca.</P>

        Channel Estimation for OFDM-based Indoor Broadband Power Line Communication Systems

        State-of-the-art indoor broadband power line com-munications (PLC) systems use orthogonal frequency divi-sion multiplexing (OFDM) signals with constellations up to10 bits/symbol, which makes channel estimation a key aspect. This paper focuses on the initial channel estimation used in thepayload, which might be further adapted by means of a decision-directed strategy. This initial estimate has to be computed on aper-frame basis and can be accomplished from the preamble, theheader symbol (assuming that it has been correctly decoded) orfrom a combination of both. This work proposes simple channelestimation techniques for this problem and derives their mostappropriate parameters. They are compared with the linearminimum mean squared-error (LMMSE) estimator and otherscommonly used in wireless scenarios by considering both theirperformance and computational complexity. The factors limitingthe performance of the estimators based on the preamble and theheader symbols are analyzed and the implications of the differ-ences between PLC and wireless channels, such as the absenceof fading, in the design of estimation techniques that requireknowledge of the channel statistics are discussed. A performanceanalysis of the considered techniques is accomplished in a set of171 measured indoor PLC channels. Obtained results indicatethat estimators from the header perform better than those basedon the preamble symbols and we provide a computationallysimple estimator that gives nearly optimum performance bycombining estimates from both the preamble and the headersymbols.

        Antivirulence Activity of a Dietary Phytochemical: Hibiscus Acid Isolated from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Reduces the Virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a Mouse Infection Model

        Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Hs) calyxes, rich in organic acids, are included in diets in different countries. In recent years, some phytochemicals have been shown to reduce bacterial virulence at sublethal concentrations by interfering with quorum sensing (QS) systems. Therefore, in this study the antivirulence properties of Hs calyxes and two γ-lactones (hibiscus acid [HA] and its methyl ester) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa were analyzed. Acetone and methanol extracts of Hs showed anti-QS activity by inhibiting violacein production (60% to 80% with 250 μg/mL). In molecular docking analysis, the γ-lactones registered a good binding score, which suggests strong interaction with the active site of LasR protein. To verify their effect in vitro, they were isolated from Hs and evaluated in six QS-regulated phenotypes, as well as in ExoU toxin that is released by the type III secretion system (T3SS). At 500 μg/mL they reduced alkaline protease (29–52%) and elastase (15–37%) activity, biofilm formation (∼75%), and swarming (50%), but there was no effect on pyocyanin production, hemolytic activity, or type III secretion. In a mouse abscess/necrosis model, HA at sublethal concentrations (15 and 31.2 μg/mL) affected infection establishment and prevented damage and systemic spread. In conclusion, HA is the first molecule identified with antivirulence properties in Hs with the potential to prevent infections caused by P. aeruginosa.

        Thermal shock resistance of mullite/Sr-celsian/zirconia composites

        The thermal shock resistance of novel mullite /Sr-celsian /zirconia composites was studied. The eff ect of the Sr-celsian (15, 20, 25 wt.%) and ZrO 2 (5, 15, 25 wt.%) amounts on the thermal shock resistance, was evaluated. The composites were obtained at 1450 °C. Thermal shock resistance was performed by heating samples up to a selected temperature (∆ T = 200–1000 °C) and then suddenly immersed in water. After testing, the bending strength was evaluated and the results were statistically analyzed using Minitab with a confi dence level of 0.05. Pareto charts showed that Sr-celsian and zirconia content have the highest infl uence on fl exural strength after thermal shock. The highest thermal shock resistance was obtained for the composites with the highest amount of zirconia and Sr-celsian. Most of the composites showed a decrease in strength of around 75%. The strength of the composites with 20 or 25 wt.% of celsian and 25 wt.% zirconia increased at ∆ T of 1000 °C. The Pareto chart for these composites showed that zirconia has the highest eff ect on strength. A change in expansion is shown between 800 and 900 °C, indicating the transformation of monoclinic to tetragonal zirconia. This transformation generates microc- racks that defl ect cracks generated during thermal stress. Also, residual stresses are generated during cooling which plays a role in absorbing the energy of a generated crack. The strontium celsian forms an interlocked microstructure that improves strength. These composites are promising materials for applications in which sudden and extreme temperature changes occur.

        Relationship Between Psychological Factors and Pain Intensity in Temporomandibular Disorders with or without Central Sensitization: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study Using Multiple Regression Analysis

        Purpose: To quantify the relationship between perceived pain intensity and psychological variables in a sample of participants with temporomandibular disorder, with or without central sensitization (CS). Methods: A cross-sectional study with nonprobability convenience sampling was conducted from January 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. Pain intensity (Numeric Pain Rating Scale), anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Questionnaire, STAI), catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale, PCS), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale, PSS), and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0 (IBM Co.), which included descriptive and normality analyses and the calculation of strength of multiple correlational regression. Results: A total of 52 (n=34 female 65.4%; n=18 male 34.6%) subjects with diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were finally included. A total of 26 participants (n=26, 50.0%) were cases suffered from CS (TMD-CS mean=46.62±11.24) while the remaining participants (n=26, 50.0%) were the controls (TMD-nCS mean=26.77, standard deviation [SD]=8.42). The pain intensity was moderate in both groups TMDCS (mean=7.62, SD=0.83) and TMD-nCS (mean=7.05, SD=0.86), anxiety (TMD-CS STAI mean=53.27, SD=11.54; TMD-nCS STAI mean=49, SD=11.55), catastrophizing (TMD-CS PCS mean=46.27, SD=9.75; TMD-nCS PCS mean=26.69, SD=4.97), perceived stress (TMDCS PSS mean=30.35, SD=4.91; TMD-nCS PSS mean=26.12, SD=6.60) and sleep quality (TMD-CS PSQI mean=15.81, SD=3.65; TMD-nCS PSQI mean=12.77, SD=2.76) levels were measured in both groups. In TMD-CS and TMD-nCS, higher anxiety levels were moderately and significantly associated with greater pain intensity β=0.4467 (t=2.477, p=0.021) and β=0.5087 (t=2.672, p=0.014). Nevertheless, catastrophizing, perceived stress and sleep quality were not associated to pain intensity in neither of group. Conclusions: In both TMD-CS and TMD-nCS patients, elevated anxiety levels were moderately and significantly associated with increased pain intensity. However, heightened levels of pain catastrophizing, perceived stress, and poor sleep quality were not significantly associated with increased pain intensity in either of the two analyzed groups.

        The world is facing unprecedented challenges related to energy resources, global climate change, material use, and waste generation. Failure to address these challenges will inhibit the growth of the developing world and will negatively impact the standard of living and security of future generations in all nations. The solutions to these challenges will require multidisciplinary research across the social and physical sciences and engineering. Although perhaps not always recognized, geotechnical engineering expertise is critical to the solution of many energy and sustainability-related problems. Hence, geotechnical engineers and academicians have opportunity and responsibility to contribute to the solution of these worldwide problems. Research will need to be extended to non-standard issues such as thermal properties of soils; sediment and rock response to extreme conditions and at very long time scales; coupled hydro-chemo-thermo-bio-mechanical processes; positive feedback systems; the development of discontinuities; biological modification of soil properties; spatial variability; and emergent phenomena. Clearly, the challenges facing geotechnical engineering in the future will require a much broader knowledge base than our traditional educational programs provide. The geotechnical engineering curricula, from undergraduate education through continuing professional education, must address the changing needs of a profession that will increasingly be engaged in alternative/renewable energy production; energy efficiency; sustainable design, enhanced and more efficient use of natural resources, waste management, and underground utilization.

        Effects of Passive Transfer Status on Growth Performance in Buffalo Calves

        The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of passive transfer status, determined by measuring serum immunoglobulin (Ig) concentration 24 hours after parturition, on growth performance in buffalo calves allowed to nurse the dam during the first month of life. Serum Ig concentration 24 hours after birth ranged from 28.1 to 35.9 mg/ml, birth weight ranged from 29 to 41 kg, body weight 30 days after birth ranged from 48.5 to 62.9 kg. The Average Daily Gain (ADG) from birth to day 30 ranged from 448 to 1,089 g/d. Significant linear associations were detected between serum Ig concentration 24 hours after birth and day-30 weight (p< 0.05; $R^2$ = 0.31) and between serum Ig concentration 24 hours after birth and ADG from birth to day 30 (p<0.001; $R^2$ = 0.72). Results indicated that passive transfer status was a significant source of variation in growth performance when buffalo calves nursed the dam. Maximizing passive transfer of immunity by allowing calves to nurse the dam can increase growth performance during the first month of life.

        The SAMI Galaxy Survey: revising the fraction of slow rotators in IFS galaxy surveys

        <P>The fraction of galaxies supported by internal rotation compared to galaxies stabilized by internal pressure provides a strong constraint on galaxy formation models. In integral field spectroscopy surveys, this fraction is biased because survey instruments typically only trace the inner parts of the most massive galaxies. We present aperture corrections for the two most widely used stellar kinematic quantities V/sigma and lambda(R) (spin parameter proxy). Our demonstration involves integral field data from the SAMI (Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectrograph) Galaxy Survey and the ATLAS(3D) survey. We find a tight relation for both V/sigma and lambda(R) when measured in different apertures that can be used as a linear transformation as a function of radius, i.e. a first-order aperture correction. In degraded seeing, however, the aperture corrections are more significant as the steeper inner profile is more strongly affected by the point spread function than the outskirts. We find that V/sigma and lambda(R) radial growth curves are well approximated by second-order polynomials. By only fitting the inner profile (0.5R(e)), we successfully recover the profile out to one R-e if a constraint between the linear and quadratic parameter in the fit is applied. However, the aperture corrections for V/sigma and lambda(R) derived by extrapolating the profiles perform as well as applying a first-order correction. With our aperture-corrected lambda(R) measurements, we find that the fraction of slow rotating galaxies increases with stellar mass. For galaxies with log M-*/M-circle dot > 11, the fraction of slow rotators is 35.9 +/- 4.3 per cent, but is underestimated if galaxies without coverage beyond one R-e are not included in the sample (24.2 +/- 5.3 per cent). With measurements out to the largest aperture radius, the slow rotator fraction is similar as compared to using aperture-corrected values (38.3 +/- 4.4 per cent). Thus, aperture effects can significantly bias stellar kinematic integral field spectrograph studies, but this bias can now be removed with the method outlined here.</P>

        Monte Carlo Simulations for the Study of a Moderated Neutron Detector

        This work presents the Monte Carlo simulations performed with the MCNPX and GEANT4 codes for the design of a BEta deLayEd Neutron detector, BELEN-20. This detector will be used for the study of beta delayed neutron emission and consists of a block of polyethylene with dimensions 90 × 90 × 80 cm ^3 and 20 cylindrical ^3He gas counters. The results of these simulations have been validated experimentally with a ^(252)Cf source in the laboratory at UPC, Barcelona. Also the first experiment with this detector has been carried out in November 2009 in JYFL, Finland. In this experiment the neutron emission probability after beta decay of the fission products ^(88)Br, ^(94,95)Rb and ^(138)I has been measured; this data is still under analysis. Simulations with MCNPX and GEANT4 have been performed in order to obtain the efficiency of the BELEN-20 detector for each of the above nuclei using the neutron energy distribution corresponding to each nucleus.
