Epilepsy is a disease characterized by the periodic occurrence of seizures. Seizures can be controlled by antiseizure medications, which can improve the lives of individuals with epilepsy when given proper treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to review the scientific literature on brain neuroplasticity after treatment with antiseizure drugs in different regions of the brain. According to the findings, that several antiseizure, such as lamotrigine, diazepam, levetiracetam, and valproic acid, in addition to controlling seizures, can also act on neuroplasticity in different brain regions. The study of this topic becomes important, as it will help to understand the neuroplastic mechanisms of these drugs, in addition to helping to improve the effectiveness of these drugs in controlling the disease.

Cu–Al alloys have been used for marine applications due to their corrosion resistance and smart materials based on the shapememory effect. A technological tendency for Cu–Al alloys is the development of increasingly complex formulations, althoughthe role of alloying elements still unclear in comparison to other metallurgical systems, such as steels. In the present study,2 at% Cu were substituted by equal quantities of Ni and Ga in the Cu81Al19alloy, which are elements from the same periodand similar in size to the Cu atom. The obtained alloys were analyzed by several characterization techniques. The resultsshowed that the Ni addition increases the critical temperatures and decreases the microhardness values. The Ga additionhas the opposite effect. Both alloying elements produce new phases in the microstructures, hamper the α phase ordering, accelerate the β phase decomposition, and increase the conductivity of the Cu81Al19alloy. From this study, it is possible torealize that small changes in atomic features (electronic structure, atomic radius, valence, electronegativity) from a portionof atoms are enough to obtain distinctive materials, which turns the design of new Cu–Al alloys and the prediction of theirproperties a challenging task.

Rural coastal regions in developing countries are generally neglected with respect to environmental issues. The present study examined the feasibility of green technologies such as rainwater harvesting (RWH), sand filtration (SF), and composting (in-vessel and pit) to recover from the environmental issues in the coastal rural regions using survey and geographic information systems considering a rural Indian case study. According to the results, RWH yielded 0.140 million litres per 100 m² rooftop in the area, while a maximum total dissolved solids removal of 52% was achieved using the SF alleviating the water concerns. Meanwhile, with a solid waste generation of 0.207 kg d-1 capita-1 comprising 79.81% organic fraction, composting becomes the best waste resource recovery option in the area. Pilot-scale studies of composting transformed organic wastes into compost manure rich in nutrients improving the soil quality. Further analysis using a multi-criteria decision-making approach revealed that the public interest in applying these technologies depends on investment costs, additional resources requirements, and governmental policies. With the scope of improved lifestyle and quality, the study proposes more future research over green technologies and their implementation and is also directed towards developing decentralized site-specific rural governmental policies to achieve sustainability goals.

Bandwidth fragmentation is a critical problem for Elastic Optical Networks (EON), and spectrum defragmentation is the most important strategy to mitigate this phenomenon. In this work we propose a Machine Learning (ML) based method for estimating the Blocking Rate, which, when exceeding a threshold, triggers a defragmentation process. This is done in order to achieve better results in terms of the number of blocking demands and the number of re-routed connections. The performance of the proposed method was compared with two other known strategies: fixed-time (FT) defragmentation, and triggering based on one fragmentation metric (BFR). Simulation results were evaluated using two multi-objective metrics. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more efficient than the other two, being the best method in 85.7% of comparisons using the Pareto Coverage metric, and obtaining 47.4% of non-dominated solutions in the Pareto Front.

This report aims to describe the first case of muscular and collagenous choristoma in a dog. A 10-yr-old female mixed-breed dog presented with lateral recumbence, vocalization, positional vertical nystagmus, divergent strabismus, anisocoria, and status epilepticus. The clinical condition evolved to stupor and ultimately, death. Necropsy revealed a white mass causing an irregular increase in the volume of the cerebellar vermis. In histological analysis, a well circumscribed, unencapsulated mass was observed in the cerebellum, consisting of fibers of striated skeletal muscle and collagen fibers, mostly mineralized. Based on the histopathological and histochemical findings, a diagnosis of muscular and collagenous cerebellar choristoma was made.

We examined the photocatalytic degradation of phenol from laboratory samples under UV radiation by using BiPO4/H2O2 and TiO2/H2O2 advanced oxidation systems. Both catalysts prepared were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction. Surface area tests showed about 3.46 and 31.33m2·g−1, respectively, for BiPO4 and TiO2. A central composite design was developed with the following variables-- catalyst concentration, time and concentration of hydrogen peroxide--to optimize the degradation process. Removal rates of 99.99% for phenol degradation using BiPO4 and TiO2 were obtained, respectively. For mineralization of organic carbon were obtained 95,56% when using BiPO4 and 63,40% for TiO2, respectively. The lumped kinetic model represented satisfactorily the degradation of phenol process, using BiPO4/H2O2/UV (R2=0.9977) and TiO2/H2O2/UV (R2=0.9701) treatments. The toxicity tests using different seed species showed the benefits of the proposed advanced oxidation process when applied to waste waters containing these pollutants.

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for the healthy development of plants, since its insufficient and supraoptimal doses can disrupt the metabolism and biomass production. We aimed to investigate the physiological responses of coffee seedlings to Zn deficiency and excess. Six-month-old seedlings were transferred to plastic pots containing a nutrient solution. The treatments were control (0.03 ppm), zinc deficiency (0.00 ppm), and zinc excess (0.12 ppm). The evaluations were performed in leaves and roots at the beginning of the treatments and after 30 and 60 d of treatments. Zn deficiency and excess increased the production of hydrogen peroxide, antioxidant enzymes activity, ascorbate, and lipid peroxidation contents. The imbalance in zinc nutrition reduced total chlorophyll content and increased carotenoids content throughout the experimental period. Lower biomass and proline accumulation were observed only for deficient seedlings at the end of the experiment. The characteristics analyzed showed that zinc deficiency caused greater damage to the Coffea arabica plants of (Catuai cultivar) than zinc excess.

The use of herbal products and/or their derivatives as an alternative or complementary medicine becomes globally popular. To date, various biological activities have been reported in Morinda citrifolia Linn, especially antioxidants, antimicrobial, anti-infammatory and antitumor efects. This study aimed to investigate the genotoxicity and DNA repair capacity of the aqueous fruit extract of M. citrifolia (AEMC). Additionally, we checked the mutagenic capacity of AEMC by the comet assay and micronucleus tests in rats. For this, rats (n=10; 5 males and 5 females) were divided into fve groups as: negative control (distilled water); positive control (25 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide, i.p.); and three groups for AEMC (2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.). The results suggest that, the AEMC induced genotoxicity in white blood cells, but a DNA repair capacity was also observed after 72 h of AEMC exposure. AEMC also showed cytotoxicity and mutagenicity in liver and kidney cells of rats at 5 and 10 mg/kg doses. In conclusion, AEMC exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and mutagenicity along with a time-dependent DNA repair capacity in rats. Further studies are necessary regarding the safe use of this medicinal plant for human consumption.

In this study, volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) was selected as a criterion for facilitatingthe scale up of xylitol production by Candida guilliermondii at the bench and pilot-scale level. A kLa valueof 16 h 1 was applied in reactors with volumetric capacity of 2.4 L, 18 L and 125 L. Fermentation wassuccessfully scaled-up from the bench to pilot-scale level with all experiments demonstrating aminimum of 60% xylose to xylitol conversion efficiency. Under all evaluated conditions glycerol andethanol were also produced as by-products of xylose metabolism. Only minor differences were observedin the fermentation profile when reactor volumes ranging from 2.4 L to 125 L were used forexperimentation purposes, reaching, at pilot scale, yield and volumetric productivity of 0.55 g g 1and 0.31 g L 1 h 1, respectively, with maximum specific growth rate of 0.26 h 1. This demonstrates andreinforces the feasibility of using kLa as scale up criterion. The use of this parameter allowed precisereproduction of results obtained at bench bioreactor level to a larger scale; this is extremely crucial andimportant information considering that the aim of the proposed biotechnological process is to reach thelevel required for the industrial viability.
