Melatonin, which is the main product of the pineal gland, has well documented antioxidant and immune-modulatory effects. Macrophages produce molecules that are known to play roles in inflammatory responses. We conducted microarray analysis to evaluate the global gene expression profiles in response to treatment with melatonin in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. In addition, eight genes were subjected to real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to confirm the results of the microarray. The cells were treated with LPS or melatonin plus LPS for 24 hr. LPS induced the up-regulation of 1073 genes and the down-regulation of 1144 genes when compared to the control group. Melatonin pretreatment of LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells resulted in the down regulation of 241 genes and up regulation of 164 genes. Interestingly, among genes related to macrophage-mediated immunity, LPS increased the expression of seven genes (Adora2b, Fcgr2b, Cish, Cxcl10, Clec4n, Il1a, and Il1b) and decreased the expression of one gene (Clec4a3). These changes in expression were attenuated by melatonin. Furthermore, the results of real-time PCR were similar to those of the microarray. Taken together, these results suggest that melatonin may have a suppressive effect on LPS-induced expression of genes involved in the regulation of immunity and defense in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Moreover, these results may explain beneficial effects of melatonin in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions.

Background/Aims: The true incidence of aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) is thought to be underestimated because numerous ingredients known or suspected to contain aristolochic acid (AA) are used in traditional medicine in Korea. Methods: We collected data on cases of AAN since 1996 via a database in Korea. We evaluated the year of AAN development, route to obtaining AA-containing herbal medicine, gender, reason for taking AA-containing herbal medicine, clinical manifestations, histological findings, phytochemical analysis, and prognosis of patients with AAN. Results: Data on 16 cases of AAN were collected. Thirteen cases developed AAN before and three cases after the prohibition of AA-containing herbal medicine by the Korea Food and Drug Administration. Patients were prescribed AA-containing herbal medicine from oriental clinics or had purchased it from traditional markets. AAN was distributed in all age groups. Young females were most commonly exposed to AA-containing herbal medicine for slimming purposes and postpartum health promotion, while older adults took AA-containing compounds for the treatment of chronic diseases. The most common symptoms presented at hospitalization were nausea and vomiting, and acute kidney injury was accompanied by Fanconi syndrome in almost half of the patients. Phytochemical analysis of AA in herbal medicine was available in six cases. Progression to end stage renal disease (ESRD) was observed in seven patients (43.8%), and five patients (31.3%) had progressed to ESRD within 6 months of diagnosis. Conclusions: Our report shows that patients were still exposed to AA-containing herbal medicine and that there is a possibility of underdiagnosis of AAN in Korea. A stronger national supervision system of herbal ingredients and remedies in oriental medicine is needed to prevent AAN.
Face Image registration methods using Normalized Cross Correlation

In the many processing stage of face recognition, one of the most important parts is face detection. In the recent years, there has been much progress in face detection. Many face recognition system adopt or develop the Adaboost: Viola-Jones face detection system. But the detected face image by adaboost method has serious problems. Face regions are apt to be different at each time, and the detected face image includes the rotated face. These issues give the bad effect to the feature extraction stage of the face recognition. In order to solve these problems, Many researchers normalize the scale of face through the detection of detail element of a face, especially the eye detection. Generally, the home service robot mounts the low resolution camera, As the distance between a robot and a user becomes increasing, it is very difficult to obtain the good result by those methods. In this paper, Normalized Cross Correlation is used to detect the exact face region in the low resolution face image. The experiments showed that our method using NCC give the much better face recognition rate.

In order to control the output voltage in a dual active bridge converter, this paper establishes a theoretical inductor current equation for a dual-pulse-width-modulation scheme that ensures low switching loss. It also proposes a modulation strategy that minimizes conduction loss. When compared to the conventional single-pulse-width-modulation strategy, the proposed approach can reduce the inductor current RMS and improve efficiency in the low power region, as verified through simulation and experimental results.

AFCI(Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) is currently used to prevent electric fire due to arc fault. However, since AFCI is not as widely used as ELB (Earth Leakage Breaker), most of electric networks have potential risks of electric fire. Although these risks do not necessarily lead to electric fire due to arc fault, outputs of SMPS and filter used in most of home appliances can be significantly changed. This paper will analyze the possible impacts of arc fault on SMPS appliances.

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features and risk factors of EHM after curative hepatectomy for HCC. Methods: From January of 2004 to December of 2013, 402 treatment-naïve patients who underwent curative hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma was enrolled from two tertiary hospitals. Univariate analyses were performed using the chisquared test or Student’s t-test, and univariate and multivariate analyses regarding EHM occurrence were performed via Cox-proportianal hazards regression. Results: EHM was diagnosed in 41 patients (10.2%) during a median follow-up period of 5.91 years. The 10-year cumulative rate of HCC recurrence and EHM was 75.9% and 15.0%, respectively. Pulmonary metastasis was the most common site of EHM (48.8%) followed by lymph nodes (19.5%), bone (14.6%), peritoneum (9.8%) and adrenal glands (9.8%). The median duration to 1st recurrence and EHM was 1.21 years and 1.81 years, respectively. In 39.0% of patients, intrahepatic HCC recurrence was not noted at diagnosis of EHM. The most of patients was diagnosed with abdomen enhanced CT (73.2%) followed by chest enhanced CT (12.2%). The risk factors associated with EHM was 1st recurrence free survival less than 9 months and mUICC T stage (III, IV) at 1st recurrence. (HR 3.480, and 6.872 and p-value 0.008, and <0.001, respectively). Conclusions: EHM after curative hepatectomy develops significantly without intrahepatic recurrence. Regular surveillance for EHM especially in patients with high mUICC T stage at recurrence and short recurrence free survival less than 9 months are required.
