Arg243, Invariably Critical for the Transcriptional Activation of Yeast Gcn4p

The arginine residue at position 243 (Arg 243) of the yeast transcription factor, Gcn4p, is invariably conserved among bZIP transcription factors. Using site-directed oligonucleotide saturation mutagenesis involving two-step polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, random mutations were successfully introduced at the codon of 243 in the basic domain of Gcn4p. This mutant library was transformed ito Gcn4p defective yeast strain and selected for the transcriptionally active colonies. All colonies which were transcriptionally active had arginines in the codon 243. In this study, the strand preference by Taq polymerase during mutagenesis was also tested. Oligonucleotides were specially designed to test whether or not the polymerase was preferred using the strand as a template. A population of randomly mutated products were cloned into an appropriate vector and characterized by DNA sequencing analysis. Saturation mutagenesis which was performed efficiently by this method revealed a strong bias in terms of strand preference of Taq polymerase by an approximate ratio of 3 to 1 in this study.

자료 포락 분석을 이용한 OECD 국가의 통신산업 효율성 비교

본 연구는 자료포락분석(Data Envelopment Analysis : DEA)를 이용하여 우리 나라를 포함한 29개 OECD 회원국들을 대상으로 1997년부터 1999년까지 3년에 걸쳐 생산 측면에서 통신산업의 상대적 효율성을 측정 비교하고 있다. DEA 분석 결과 OECD 회원국간에도 국가별로 효율성의 격차가 크게 발생하고 있음을 보여주고 있다. CCR모형에 의한 측정 결과 우리 나라는 효율성이 매우 낮은 그룹에 속하는 것으로 나타났다. BCC모형에 의한 측정 결과도 CCR모형에 비해서는 효율성이 증가하였지만, 여전히 OECD 회원국간에선 효율성이 낮은 국가에 속하고 있음을 보여준다. Using Date Envelopment Analysis(DEA) technique, we measure the relative efficiencies of telecommunication industry in 29 OECD countries during 1997-1999 periods. We apply both CCR and BCC models. CCR model assumes constant returns to scale while BCC model imposes no restriction on technology. First, the result shows that there exists a significant differences in efficiency among OECD countries. Second, according to CCR model, Korea belongs to a group with low efficiency. BCC model shows that there exists some efficiency increases, but Korea still belongs to the group with low efficiency.

The bone responses, on the osserointegrated implants with different surface characteristics such as, Bonfit^?? (titantum plasma sprayed hollow-screw type), Integral^?? (hydroxylapatite-coated cylinder type), Steri-Oss^?? (hydroxylapatite-coated screw type), and Steri-Oss^?? (uncoated smooth surfaced screw type) in the mandible of dogs. In 3 adult flogs (20-25 kg B.W.), 4 kinds of implants were placed in the edentulous sites previously extracted four months ago. The animals were sacrificed at r, 8, and 12 weeks. The specimens were prepared by using Villaneuva staining and undecalcified ground sectioning and evaluated under a light microscope. The obtained results were as follows; 1. After 4 and 8 weeks, titanium plasma sprayed or hydroxylapatite-coated implants had less fibrous tissue contact and more bone formation than uncoated implants. Hydroxylapatite-coated implants were most favorable in the degree of osseointegration. 2. Bone tissue were substituted for fibrous tissue adjacent to the surface of the implants and the implants were surrounded with compact lamellar bone after 12 weeks. 3. Bone contact with the surface of the: implants was more intimate and bone remodelling was faster in the cortical bone than in the medullary bone. 4. Bone ingrowth into the porous surfaced implants was faster than the smooth surfaced implants. The results from this study demonstrate that the hydroxylapatite coating provides an osteophilic surface for bone deposition and the porous surface allows more rapid bone ingrowth, but there are no significant differences depending on surface characteristics with time.
Measurement of Indoor Air Quality for Ventilation with the Existence of Occupants in Schools

This paper evaluates the performance of ventilation for the removal of indoor pollutants as a function of ventilation rate and the number of occupants in a test room and school classroom. An experimental apparatus consists of a test room, a tracer gas supply system, a gas detector, and a fan for ventilation air supply with a controller. The ventilation performance is evaluated in a step-down method based on ASTM Standard E741-83 using CO2 gas as a tracer gas in the test room of 35 m3. For the ventilation air flow rate of 1.0 ACH, a recommended ventilation flow rate of Korea school standard for acceptable indoor air quality in the case of one person, CO2 gas concentration decreases up to 55% within 50 minutes without occupancy and increases up to 75% in the case of one occupant. Also indoor air quality at the school classroom is investigated experimentally.

Background: Despite prognostic value of anemia, there have been few effective risk models incorporating anemia to predict major adverse cardiac events (MACEs). We aimed to assess whether modifi ed clinical SYNTAX score (mCSS) would improve the ability of the SYNTAX score (SS) and the Clinical SYNTAX score (CSS) to predict MACEs of patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: The CSS was calculated in 642 patients by multiplying the SS to an ACEF score (age/left ventricular ejection fraction + 1 if estimated glomerular fi ltration rate >60ml/min). The mCSS was calculated by adding anemia to ACEF score (ACEF score + 1 if hemoglobin levels < 12. 0g/dL in women and Results: During the follow-up, rate of MACE was signifi cantly higher in the highest tertile group compared with patients in the lower 2 tertiles (1. 4% versus 4. 2% versus 14. 7%; log-rank p Conclusions: Novel mCSS incorporating anemia improves the discrimination accuracy of SS and CSS to predict MACEs of patients underwent primary PCI after STEMI.
