A new gasoline internal combustion engine was designed and built by improving the cranking mechanism. Numerical simulations were also performed to optimize the cranking mechanism to achieve both a high compression ratio operation without knocking and a high thermal efficiency operation. As a result, a special cranking mechanism was considered to make a rapid piston motion near TDC, leading to less heat loss and also a tolerance for knocking limit. To evaluate this new concept, a leaf-shaped gear system was employed in a test engine. As a result, indicated thermal efficiency with the gear system in compression ratio of 12 was improved by 12% compared to a conventional engine with compression ratio of 10. Moreover, the exhaust gas emissions of HC and NOx were much reduced

<P>In this letter, we demonstrated a high performance organic thin-film transistor using thermally evaporated amorphous phase MoO<SUB>x</SUB> as a hole injection layer between metal electrodes and organic semiconductor. The fabricated organic thin-film transistors showed the field-effect mobility of 7 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/Vs in linear and saturation regimes and an ON/OFF current ratio of 10<SUP>7</SUP>. The MoO<SUB>x</SUB> hole injection layers significantly reduced the injection barrier from metal electrode, resulting in the improvement of ohmic contact properties of a synthesized thiophene-rich heteroacene, dibenzothiopheno [6,5-b:6',5'-f] thieno [3,2-b] thiophene p-type organic semiconductor, as compared with those with single metals. Furthermore, high performance organic thin-film transistors can be successfully realized with Al electrode, which is not suitable for p-type organic semiconductors due to its low work function by introducing a 75-nm-thick MoO<SUB>x</SUB> hole injection layer.</P>

To reduce the fault current below the current capacity of a circuit breaker, researches on HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) power cables with fault current limiting (FCL) function are increasing. An FCL HTS power cable transports current with low a impedance during normal operation. Yet, it limits the fault current by an increased inductive or resistive impedance of conducting layer when quench occurs at the FCL HTS power cable by the large fault current. An inductive type FCL HTS power cable uses increased inductive impendence caused by leakage magnetic flux outside the cable core when the quench occurs at a shield layer losing the magnetic shielding effect. Therefore, it has an advantage of less resistive heating than resistive type FCL HTS power cable and temperature increase is suppressed. This paper describes an ideal circuit model for the FCL HTS power cable to investigate the effectiveness of increased inductive impedance when quench occurs at the shield layer. Then, FEM analysis is presented with a simplified model cable composed of various iron yokes to investigate the effect of the shape of yoke on the generation of the inductive impedance.

<P> Though apartments are often criticized for their homogeneous nature, they are being actively adopted as an efficient method of providing houses for developing countries. In this paper, the authors argue whether such phenomenon can be seen simply as cultural identity giving in to internationalism. That is, apartments can indeed reflect locality within their spatial structure. To support this argument, apartment units from Korea, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan, three countries from dramatically different climate zones and cultural backgrounds, are analyzed. In doing so, Space Syntax, a quantitative analysis method widely used to interpret the cultural aspects embedded into a spatial structure is utilized. Each country's apartment units had different functions at the topological center, which should not be seen as a mere coincidence since they were consistent with the spatial characteristic found in their respective traditional houses. Therefore, it can be said that apartments, in their unit plans, do reflect locality, a direct contradiction to the general belief. </P>

Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the in situ degradation parameters and appropriate feeding level of pineapple cannery by-products (PCB) based on the growth performance and blood parameters of growing Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) steers fed various levels of PCB. Methods: Two ruminally cannulated Holstein cows were used for in situ disappearance rate measurements. Nylon bags (5×10 cm, 45 ㎛ pore size) filled with 5 g of PCB in triplicate were inserted into the ventral sac of the two cannulated Holsteins cows and incubated for 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 48 h. A total of 16 castrated growing Hanwoo steers (12.5±0.5 months old, 302.9±25.7 kg of initial body weight [BW]) were used for the experiment. Animals were stratified by initial BW and then randomly assigned to one of four experimental diets (0%, 1.5%, 3.0%, or 6.0% of PCB, on the dry matter [DM] basis) fed for 91-d, including 30-d of adaptation. Results: Soluble fraction a of DM and crude protein (CP) was 61.9% and 86.0%, fraction b of DM and CP was 32.7% and 11.2%, and indigestible fraction c of DM and CP was 5.4% and 2.8%. The 6.0% PCB feeding group showed lower productivity compared to animals in the other treatments. Increasing the dietary level of PCB did not alter DM intake, but it was numerically lowest in the 6.0% feeding group. The gain to feed ratio was linearly decreased by increasing of PCB. The quadratic broken-line test estimated that 2.5% (DM basis) was the maximum feeding level of PCB in growing Hanwoo steers (y = 0.103 - 0.001×[1.245-x]2, R2 = 0.18). Conclusion: Diets containing up to 2.5% PCB can be fed to growing Hanwoo steers without adverse effects on growth performance.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Fluorescence imaging enables the uniquely sensitive observation of functional‐ and molecular‐recognition events in living cells. However, only a limited range of biological processes have been subjected to imaging because of the lack of a design strategy and difficulties in the synthesis of biosensors. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of emission‐tunable and predictable Seoul‐Fluors, 9‐aryl‐1,2‐dihydrolopyrrolo[3,4‐<I>b</I>]indolizin‐3‐ones, with various R<SUP>1</SUP> and R<SUP>2</SUP> substituents by coinage‐metal‐catalyzed intramolecular 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition and subsequent palladium‐mediated CH activation. We also showed that the quantum yields of Seoul‐Fluors are controlled by the electronic nature of the substituents, which influences the extent of photoinduced electron transfer. On the basis of this understanding, we demonstrated our design strategy by the development of a Seoul‐Fluor‐based chemosensor <B>20</B> for reactive oxygen species that was not accessible by a previous synthetic route.</P>
