Background: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to evaluate the degree of sinus involvement in case of inverted papilloma (IP). However, CT cannot differentiate tumor from adjacent inflammatory mucosa or retained secretions. By contrast, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been reported to be useful in distinguishing IP from paranasal sinusitis. This study investigated whether preoperative assessment with MRI and CT accurately predict the extent of IP. Materials and methods: CT and MRI were retrospectively reviewed in 9 case of IP. Patients were categorized into staged based on CT and MRI findings according to the staging system proposed by Krouse. The involvement of IP in each sinus was also assessed. Results: Differentiation of IP from inflammatory disease may be more successful in routine case where the inflammatory mucosa has low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and very high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. CT imaging could not differentiate tumor from adjacent inflammatory mucosa or retained secretions. Conclusion: Preoperative MRI of IP can predict the location and extent of the tumor involvement in the paranasal sinuses and sometimes predicts malignant changes.

콜레스테롤 노출 랫드의 조직 변화에 끼치는 쌀된장의 식이 효과

고지혈증 유발 완화 기능성을 조사하기 위하여 고지혈증 유도 기본식이에 1.5% cholesterol+0.05% choline chloride와 쌀된장(Rice-Doenjang: RD) 및 분말쌀된장(Powder Rice-Doenjang: PRD)을 각 각 0, 2, 4 및 6% 되도록 조제하여 4주 동안 사료와 음용수를 자유롭게 섭취시키고 매일 오전 10 시에 섭취량을 측정, 체중은 5일마다 정해진 시간에 측정하여 체중 증가율 및 식이 효율을 구하였 다. 실험식이 4주 후, 간, 신장 및 비장조직을 적출하여 haematoxylin-eosin으로 염색한 후 검경하 여 랫드의 조직 변화를 조사하였다. 최종 체중은 사료로 구성된 {정상군}과 {대조군, RD 및 PRD} 사이에 유의성이 인정되었으나 {대 조군}, {RD}, {PRD} 사이에 유의성은 없었다(p<0.05). 식이 효율은 0.258-0.394 범위로 정상군이 가 장 높고, PRD 6% 군이 가장 낮았다. 간, 비장 및 신장 조직을 haematoxylin-eosin으로 염색하여 검경한 결과, 간 조직의 경우만 변성 지방구가 확인되었고, 비장과 신장은 정상이었다. 간에 생성 된 변성지방구는 쌀된장과 분말쌀된장의 섭취량 증가로 감소되는 경향이었다. 이상의 결과로 기본식이에 2-4% 분말쌀된장의 첨가가 기능성 지질화합물을 증가시키는 효과적인 수준으로 판단되었다.
Effect of Cheonggukjang Made from Sword Bean on Serum Lipid Profile and Tissue Change in Rats

This study was to investigate serum triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL), and cholesterol concentrations after feeding the combined diets of prepared traditional Cheonggukjang (TC) or Cheonggukjang made from sword bean powder (CS), the feed, and high-fat cholesterols at certain ratio for 8 weeks in rats, and then confirmed the effects of the diets based on the changes in the tissues of livers, kidneys, and spleens. The serum TG concentrations were lower in CS group compared to that of in TC group. The increase of PL concentrations was greater in CS group than that of TC group. FChCS6 group (92% feed+2% cholesterol+6% CS) showed the lowest total-cholesterol (T-C), 60.1±8.5mg/dL, indicating that CS was effective to lower the T-C. Both TG/PL and T-C/PL ratio tended to be decreased. As CS intake was effective in the reduction of low density lipoprotein-cholesterol level as well as the increase of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol level, it would be effective in the prevention of adult diseases and circulatory diseases. It was confirmed that there were no changes in organ appearance and tissues in the rats with CS intake. Therefore, CS intake showed superior functionalities than that of TC intake.
Hepatic Resection for Hepatic Metastases from Gastric Adenocarcinoma

Purpose: The effects of hepatic resection on patients with metastatic tumors from gastric adenocarcinomas are unclear. Therefore, we analyzed early clinical outcomes in patients who underwent surgical resection for hepatic metastases from gastric adenocarcinomas. Materials and Methods: From January 2003 to December 2010, 1,508 patients with primary gastric cancers underwent curative gastric resections at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital. Of these patients, 12 with liver-only metastases underwent curative hepatic resection. Their clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. Results: The median follow-up period was 12.5 months (range, 1~85 months); no operative mortalities or major complications were observed. Three patients underwent synchronous resections, and 9 underwent metachronous resections. In the latter group, the median interval between gastrectomy and hepatectomy for hepatic metastasis was 10.5 months (range, 5~47 months). The overall 1- and 5-year survival rates of these 12 patients were 65% and 39%, respectively, with a median overall survival of 31.0 months; 2 patients survived for >5 years. Conclusions: Hepatic resection can be a feasible procedure for treating hepatic metastases from gastric adenocarcinomas. Although this study was small and involved only selected cases, the outcomes of the hepatic resections were comparable and long-term (>5 years) survivors were identified. Surgical resection of the liver can be considered a feasible option in managing hepatic metastases from gastric adenocarcinomas.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study of O-ring Polymer Exposed to High-Pressure Hydrogen

Magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for <SUP>19</SUP>F and 1H nuclei was used how exposure to high-pressure (70 MPa) H₂ gas affected an O-ring material. <SUP>19</SUP>F MAS NMR revealed that poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoroprophylene) in VDF/HFP = 76.1/23.9 mol % (FKM type 1) was involved in the O-ring material. This copolymer may undergo main-chain scission and termination to -CF₂H end groups during depressurization of high-pressure H₂. Evidence for formation of additional -CF₂H end group includes a small increase in the <SUP>19</SUP>F MAS NMR signal at -96 ppm, and a corresponding ¹H MAS NMR signal at 7.1 ppm in comparison with those in the material that had not been exposed to high-pressure H₂. Neither the <SUP>19</SUP>F nor the ¹H MAS NMR showed chemical shift after exposure to H₂; this absence of response means that exposure to H₂ did not affect the structure of the polymer.
초음파 나노표면개질을 적용한 궤도차량용 토션바 제조 및 재제조용 표면개질기술에 관한 연구

The Ultrasonic Nanocrystal Surface Modificatian (UNSM) technology improves the fatigue life of a torsion bar by inducing compressive residual stress on the surface layer. The UNSM is applied to replace the presetting method and shot peening technology. The torsion bar must be changed periodically because of a lack of durability and a phenomenon related to the stress relaxation. The torsion fatigue test specimens were made of DIN17221 material, and the results showed that the fatigue life was 5 times more than under durability test canditians. A comparison test between the commercial vehicles’ presetting method and shot peened torsion bar and the UNSM torsion bar showed that the UNSM could replace the presetting method and shot peening. The results for the stress relaxation and service life renewal study of used torsion bars also give a brief introduction to the UNSM technology.
용접부 균열의 크리프-피로 균열성장 수명평가 연구 (Ⅰ)

High temperature material properties of a welded joint were experimentally studied. Tensile and creep properties were measured for each part of weld metal, HAZ(heat affected zone) and parent metal at 538℃. HAZ metal was obtained by a simulated heat treatment. Results showed that the order of tensile strength is weld>HAZ>parent both at 24℃ and at 538℃. Creep resistance was also the highest for weld metal and lowest for parent metal. Creep rupture life curves were obtained and converted to Monkman-Grant relation which is useful for life assessment. Use of the data obtained in this study is discussed.
