        Disaster Handling through Volunteering and Charitable Donation: The Roles of South Korean Telethon, Involvement, and Collective-Efficacy

        This study examined whether South Koreans' philanthropic behaviors were related to the factors of two theoretical frameworks. From the involvement perspective, the study argued that three types of involvement with a telethon may be linked to volunteering and charitable donation behaviors. At the collective level, collective-efficacy may also be related to such behaviors. The study asked 279 South Koreans to respond to a Web survey that used convenience sampling. Results found that after controlling for demographics and past volunteer experiences, cognitive and behavioral involvement and collective-efficacy were positively related to volunteering behaviors, but affective involvement was not related. Moreover, only behavioral involvement and collective-efficacy were positively related to charitable donation. These results suggest that researchers and practitioners for volunteering resources need to use effective programs and contents for such behaviors in order to enhance involvement and level of collective-efficacy among community members in times of disaster.

        Examining Theory of Planned Behavior and Collective Efficacy for a Public Health Communication Campaign : An Application to Sexual Violence Prevention

        독립된 객체와 사회적 동물로서의 인간의 커뮤니케이션 행동은 다각적인 관점에서 이해되어야만 한다. 본 연구에서는 성폭력 예방을 두 가지 관점에서 접근하고자 하였다. 우선, 개인적 차원에서 이 연구는 건강정보 추구행동에 미치는 계획된 행동이론의 주요 변인들의 효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 집단적 차원에서는 지역사회 구성원들과의 성폭력 예방 지지 의도가 집단적 효능감에 의해 증대될 수 있는지를 고찰하고자 하였다. 국내에서 실시된 온라인 설문(N = 270) 결과, 개인의 태도, 그리고 인식된 행위 통제가 성폭력 예방 및 치료에 관한 정보 추구 의도에 유의미하게 영향을 미쳤으며, 이러한 의도는 다시 실제 행동을 이끌어냈다. 그뿐만 아니라, 집단적 효능감은 지역사회 구성원들에 대한 신뢰를 통제한 후에도 여전히 지지 행위 의도에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구 결과는 개인의 정보추구 행동에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 요인을 제시하고자 하며, 집단적 효능감이 지역사회에서 성폭력 예방을 위해 촉진되어야 함을 의미한다. 헬스 캠페인 실무자 및 정책입안자들은 이러한 공중 보건 이슈를 위한 효과적인 캠페인 메시지와 정책을 계발시킬 수 있을 것이다. The communication behaviors of human beings as independent objects and social animals should be understood from a multilateral perspective. This study approached sexual violence prevention from two perspectives. From an individual level, the study tested the effects of the primary variables of the theory of planned behavior on health information-seeking behavior. From a collective level, it examined whether collective efficacy can increase individuals’ intention to support sexual violence prevention with other community members. Korean citizens (N = 270) participated in a Web survey. Results found that individuals’ attitude and perceived behavioral control significantly affected their intent to seek information about sexual violence prevention and treatment, which, in turn, led to their actual behavior. Moreover, collective efficacy significantly affected the intention to support even after controlling trust toward other community members. These results suggest factors that can affect individuals’ information-seeking behavior and imply that collective efficacy should be facilitated for sexual violence prevention in community. Health campaign practitioners and policy-makers will be able to develop effective campaign messages and policies for this public health issue.

        How Do South Koreans Perceive Corporate Social Capital and Its Benefits? An Application to Corporations and Community

        A recent public opinion survey found that the anti-corporate sentiment of South Korean citizens is primarily due to the misbehavior of Korean corporations. South Korean citizens' skepticism of corporations may hinder the democratic and economic development of the country. As a driving force for community development, social capital is considered to enable citizens to collaborate with one another to resolve a shared problem. Specifically, this study pays attention to the relationship among social capital, corporate capacity, and trust, which may perhaps contribute to developing a democratic environment in Korean society. The study aims to explore whether Korean citizens' perceived corporate bonding and bridging social capital affect corporate capacity for collaborative action and trust in corporations. A Web survey of 385 South Koreans was conducted. The findings show that perceived bonding social capital among employees is positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action. Moreover, perceived bonding among employees and bridging social capital between employees and local residents are positively related to corporate capacity for collaboration action and trust in corporations. These findings suggest that researchers and practitioners for organizational development and community-building need to enhance corporate social capital.

        The Effects of Mr. and Mrs. Reeve on Public Health Issues: Celebrity Identification and Parasocial Interaction

        본 연구는 유명인 동일화(celebrity identification)와 준사회적 상호작용 (parasocial interaction)의 개념을 바탕으로, 유명인과의 동일화 과정이 공공 헬스 이슈에 대한 개인의 관심 및 태도 변화에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 고찰하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 재활 운동과 척추 연구, 의료 보호 확대를 요청하는 사회운동을 벌였던 슈퍼맨의 주연인 크리스토퍼 리브와 다나 리브 사례를 이용하였다. 미국 대학생 표본을 대상으로 두 번의 횡단적 서베이를 통해 유명인과의 동일화와 준사회적 상호작용과 관련된 효과를 측정하였다. 첫 번째 서베이결과에서는 크리스토퍼 리브와의 동일화가 개개인의 건강보험 커버리지, 척수 이상에 대한 연구, 줄기 세포 연구에 대한 법 제정 여부에 대한 관심에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 두 번째 설문에서는 크리스토퍼 리브와 다나 리브와의 동일화가 장애인의 삶의 질 향상을 지지하려는 개인의 태도에 긍정적으로 영향을 미치고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 따라서 본 연구는 적합한 유명인 홍보대사를 선택을 통해 공공 헬스 캠페인을 효과적으로 설계될 수 있다는 점을 밝히는데 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다. Based on celebrity identification and parasocial interaction, this study assessed whether the celebrity identification process affects individual concerns with and attitudes toward public health issues. Two different cross-sectional surveys asked American college students to complete items related to identification and parasocial interaction with Christopher and Dana Reeve. The findings of the first survey indicated that identification with Christopher Reeve led to individual concerns with health insurance coverage, research on spinal cord injuries, and legislation to legalize research on stem cells. The second survey also revealed that identification with Christopher and Dana Reeve resulted in individuals’ positive attitude toward supporting the quality of life for the disabled. The study provides implications that public health campaigns can be effectively devised by the proper selection of celebrity endorsers.

        주의력결핍 과대행동장애 치료 행위의 메시지 프레이밍 설득 효과 관여도와 주관적 지식의 역할을 중심으로

        This study examined what persuasive effects can occur from gain- and loss-frame messages regarding the treatment behavior of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among parents with children. Furthermore, the study also tested the specific roles of parents’ involvement and subjective knowledge. An experiment of 184 parents in the 30’s and 40’s was conducted to test the interaction effect of message framing, involvement, and subjective knowledge. The findings showed that gain framing were more likely to affect parents’ attitudes toward and intent to purchase ADHD stimulant medications. In terms of interaction effects, the study found that those parents with the low level of subjective knowledge and high level of involvement tend to be more affected by loss framing. However, those with the high levels of subjective knowledge and involvement tend to be more affected by gain framing. The study can offer theoretical foundations that need to develop and devise health messages in persuasive and health communication fields. Based on this, practitioners in medical, public health, advertising, and public relations industries will more effectively develop persuasive message strategies.

        코로나19 유행시기의 대학생 신체건강 증진요인 고찰: 건강콘텐츠노출, 건강정보주목, 개인적·사회적 위험인식, 건강자기효능감 역할 분석

        The physical health problems of college students have become vulnerable due to the COVID-19 pandemic and require management at personal and social levels. This study compares and analyzes the effects of antecedents that affect the physical health promotion of college students, including health content exposure, health information attention, personal and social risk perception, and health self-efficacy. Furthermore, it examined the moderating effect of health self-efficacy in the relationship between the two types of risk perception and physical health promotion intention. An online survey (N=216) was conducted for college students who were conveniently sampled. Results revealed that health information attention and health self-efficacy positively affected physical health promotion intention, but health content exposure and personal/societal risk perceptions did not significantly affect. Moreover, the study found the significant moderating effects of health self-efficacy. Specifically, personal and societal risk perception in groups with low self-efficacy affected the physical health promotion intention. The results imply that health and risk communication researchers and campaigners should use health information attention, self-efficacy, and risk perceptions more effectively in conducting audience segmentation and planning communication strategies for the physical health promotion of college students.

        How Korean Newspapers and Television News Programs Covered Blood Donation:A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Facilitators and Barriers

        본 연구는 한국의 일간지와 텔레비전 뉴스 프로그램에 나온 헌혈 보도 기사를 내용분석 방법을 통해 조사하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 헌혈의 촉진 요인 및 장애 요인의 속성들을 바탕으로 헌혈 보도 기사의 주제 및 주기를 평가하였다. 더 나아가 질적 분석을 통하여 해당 기사들의 단어, 구절, 묘사, 비유 및 소스를 면밀히 살펴 보았다. 주요 연구 결과로는 헌혈에 관한 자기정체성, 이타심 및 집단적 행동들이 공포감보다 더욱 우세하게 나온 것을 발견하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 헌혈을 긍정적 및 규범적 행위로 묘사하거나, 시민들의 인도주의적 가치로, 혹은 역할 모델이나 이상적 시민으로 묘사하였다는 것이다. 또한, 헌혈자로는 다양한 공동체 구성원들이 포함되었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해서, 미디어 헌혈 캠페인 실무자들과 정책 입안자들이 커뮤니케이션 채널을 이용하여 헌혈의 긍정적 측면을 전달하기 위해 노력해야 한다는 점을 시사해 준다. The purpose of this study is to investigate the blood donation news coverage through a content analysis of South Korean newspapers and television news programs. Based on the attributes of facilitators of and barriers to blood donation, topics and frequencies of news stories about blood donation were assessed. They were further scrutinized through a qualitative analysis of words and phrases, narratives, metaphors, and sources about those stories. Results indicated that self-identity, altruism, and collective action regarding blood donation were more prevalently observed than fear in the media. Moreover, the news media portrayed blood donation as positive and normative behaviors, humanistic value among citizens, or role model and ideal citizen, while its donors included a range of community members. The implications of the results suggest that media campaign practitioners and policy-makers for blood donation should make every effort to deliver the positive aspect of the issue through communication channels.
