BOARD STRUCTURE AND AGENCY COSTS
Bing sheng Yi,Chia Wei Chen,T Chotigeat People&Global Business Association 2007 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.12 No.1
Several features are used to measure board structure: board size. leadership. inside director ownership. outside director ownership, and proportion of outside directors. Among these features. only inside director ownership significantly affects agency costs. and its effect is non-linear. In addition, the paper shows that small firms tend to have lower agency costs than large firms when the CEO also acts as chairperson of the board. Direct evidence on the relationship between hoard structure and agency costs is provided: the findings have important implications to shareholders and policy makers
SIZE EFFECT IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EQUITY OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE AND CORPORATE PERFORMANCE
J Barry Lin,Bing sheng Yi People&Global Business Association 2003 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.8 No.1
This paper investigates the relationship between firm performance and different kinds of corporate equity ownership-insider ownership. institutional ownership. and blookholder ownership--for a sample of 2,822 publicly listed companies in the United States 1998. There are significant differences between small and large firms in the relationship between ownership structure and firm performance. Specifically. for small firms. institutional ownership has a significant positive effect on firm performance. while blockholding has a negative bur insignificant effect. In contrast. large firms. blockholding has a significant negative effect on firm performance. and institutional ownership has a positive but insignificant effect. It appears that the roles played by these large shareholders are different for small firms vs. large firms. Insider ownership has no significant effect on firm performance. indicating that. on average. firms have endogenously-determined optimal degrees of insider holding.
Effect of Grape Procyanidins on Tumor Angiogenesis in Liver Cancer Xenograft Models
Feng, Li-Li,Liu, Bing-Xia,Zhong, Jin-Yi,Sun, Li-Bin,Yu, Hong-Sheng Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.2
Background: In recent years a wide variety of flavonoids or polyphenolic substances have been reported to possess substantial anti-carcinogenic and antimutagenic activities. Grape proanthocyanidins (GPC) are considered as good examples for which there is evidence of potential roles as anti-carcinogenic agents. Methods: A xenograft model was established using H22 cells subcutaneously injected into mice and used to assess different concentrations of grape proanthocyanidins (GPC) and Endostar. Treatments were maintained for 10 days, then levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvessel density (MVD) were examined by immunohistochemistry, while VEGF mRNA was determined by real-time PCR in tumor tissue. Results: The expression of MVD and VEGF decreased gradually as the concentration of GPC increased. There was a significant positive correlation between MVD and VEGF. Conclusions: These results suggest that GPC restrains the growth of tumor, possibly by inhibiting tumour angiogenesis.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the expression of B7-H4 in human thyroid cancer and determine any association with patient clinicopathological parameters and survival. Methods: B7-H4 expression in 64 clinical thyroid cancer specimens was assessed with immunohistochemistry. Moreover, B7-H4 mRNA expression in 10 fresh resected specimens were evaluated by the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Immunohistochemical staining of CD3 was performed to assess the number of tumor infiltrating T lymphocytes (TILs) in thyroid cancers. Results: Positive B7-H4 immunohistochemical staining was observed in 61 out of 64 (95.3%) specimens of thyroid cancer tissues. Significantly more B7-H4 mRNA copies were found in thyroid cancer tissue than that adjacent normal tissue. Moreover, B7-H4 expression in human thyroid cancer tissues was significantly correlated with patient TNM stages and extrathyroidal extension (P<0.05), being inversely correlated with the number of TILs (P<0.05). The overall survival rate of the patients with higher B7-H4 expression was significantly worse than that of the patients with lower B7-H4 expression. Conclusions: This present study suggests that high B7-H4 expression is associated with cancer progression, reduced tumor immunosurveillance and worse patient outcomes in human thyroid cancer.

Purpose Rituximab with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone administered every 3 weeks (R-CHOP-21) is the standard care for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). It is unknown whether the dose-dense R-CHOP (R-CHOP-14) could improve the outcome of the disease in Asian population. Materials and Methods Newly diagnosed DLBCL patients were centrally, randomly assigned (1:1) to receive R-CHOP- 14 or R-CHOP-21. R-CHOP-14 was administered every 2 weeks, and R-CHOP-21 was administered every 3 weeks. Primary end point was disease-free survival (DFS). Secondary end points included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), response rate and toxicities. Results Seven hundred and two patients were randomly assigned to receive R-CHOP-14 (n=349) or R-CHOP-21 (n=353). With a median follow-up of 45.6 months, the two groups did not differ significantly in 3-year DFS (79.6% for R-CHOP-14 vs. 83.2% for R-CHOP-21, p=0.311), 3-year OS (77.5% for R-CHOP-14 vs. 77.6% for R-CHOP-21, p=0.903), or 3-year PFS (63.2% for R-CHOP-14 vs. 66.1% for R-CHOP-21, p=0.447). Patients with an International Prognostic Index (IPI) score ! 2 had a poorer prognosis compared to those with an IPI score < 2. Grade 3/4 hematologic and non-hematologic toxicities were manageable and similar between R-CHOP-14 and R-CHOP-21. Conclusion R-CHOP-14 did not improve the outcome of DLBCL compared to R-CHOP-21 in Asian population. With manageable and similar toxicities, both of the two regimens were suitable for Asian DLBCL patients. For high-risk patients with IPI ! 2, new combination regimens based on R-CHOP deserve further investigation to improve efficacy.
CORPORATE LEVERAGE AND FUTURE GROWTH: EVIDENCE FROM INDONESIA'S EMERGING CAPITAL MARKET
J Barry Lin,T Chotigeat,Bing sheng Yi People&Global Business Association 2004 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.9 No.2
This study investigates the relationship between leverage and future corporate growth, using a ten-year sample of Indonesian firms. The leverage effect is found to be insignificant for the overall sample, unlike the earlier findings by Lang et al. (1996) for firms in a well-developed market such as the U.S. However, when firms are sorted by size and Tobin's q, only the small low-q firms indicate a statistically significant negative effect of leverage on future corporate growth. This is evidence consistent with the fact that the Indonesian economy has been dominated by large firms which have better access to capital markets, and also that small firms with high growth potential do not suffer from debt-overhang, although small firms with low growth potential do.
Injection molding of ultra-fine zirconia (Y-TZP) powders
Zhi-peng Xie,Zhong-zhou Yi,Bing Xiaoc, Yan Gao,Jie-sheng Luo,Jian-bao Li,Yong Huang 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2006 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.7 No.1
Injection moldings of three types of ultra-fine zirconia powder were investigated. It was demonstrated that powder characteristics involving particle size, particle size distribution, particle shape and specific surface area significantly affect the optimal compositions of binders and ceramic powders, and the properties of sintered compacts. Investigation of the injection molding variables showed that an excessive barrel-deposited value may easily lead to defects in the debound and sintered bodies. It was also demonstrated that the microstructure of a sintered body can be affected by heating rates influencing grain growth, and that suitable heating rates to the high temperature sintering stage for the three powders are different.

Aims: Serum prealbumin is more sensitive to profile nutritional status and liver function than albumin, which could hardly be affected by infusion supplement. This study aims: to identify the relationship between preoperative prealbumin level and the long-term prognosis after curative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: Patients undergone HCC curative resection between 2001 and 2014 at six institutions in China were enrolled. By using 170 mg/dl as cut-off value of serum prealbumin level, these patients were divided into the low and normal preoperative prealbumin groups. The overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were analyzed and compared. Univariable and multivariable Cox-regression analyses were performed to identify predictive factors of OS and RFS. Results: Among 1,483 patients, 437 (29.5%) had a low prealbumin level within a week before surgery. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS and RFS rates of patients in the low prealbumin group were 83.8, 57.0, and 31.1%, and 67.0, 39.8, and19.9%, respectively, which was significantly poorer than those in the normal group (93.0, 75.5, and 42.6%, and 77.0, 56.4, and 28.4%, both P<0.001). Multivariable analyses revealed that preoperative prealbumin level, but not albumin level, was an independent predictor of OS (HR, 1.789; 95% CI: 1.544 -2.072, P<0.001) and RFS (HR, 1.420; 95% CI: 232-1.636, P<0.001). Conclusions: Preoperative prealbumin level is useful for predicting long-term prognosis in patients undergoing liver resection for HCC. Prealbumin may be suitable to displace albumin, yielding to an updated Child-Pugh grade for accessing liver function.

It disseminates from gut to mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs), spleen, and liver of infected humans and animals. Although the molecular mechanisms for dissemination and infection are unclear, many Gram-negative enteropathogens presumably invade the small intestine via Peyer’s patches to initiate dissemination. In this study, we demonstrate that <I>Y. pseudotuberculosis</I> utilizes its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) core to interact with CD209 receptors, leading to invasion of human dendritic cells (DCs) and murine macrophages. These <I>Y. pseudotuberculosis</I>-CD209 interactions result in bacterial dissemination to MLNs, spleens, and livers of both wild-type and Peyer’s patch-deficient mice. The blocking of the <I>Y. pseudotuberculosis</I>-CD209 interactions by expression of O-antigen and with oligosaccharides reduces infectivity. Based on the well-documented studies in which HIV-CD209 interaction leads to viral dissemination, we therefore propose an infection route for <I>Y. pseudotuberculosis</I> where this pathogen, after penetrating the intestinal mucosal membrane, hijacks the <I>Y. pseudotuberculosis</I>-CD209 interaction antigen-presenting cells to reach their target destinations, MLNs, spleens, and livers.</P>
